5 players tried out for the Broncos this week

Broncos tried out five players earlier this week, including tight end Ricky Seals-Jones.

The Denver Broncos tried out five players — two wide receivers, two tight ends and a quarterback — on Tuesday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

The quarterback was Ohio’s Nathan Rourke, who spent the last two years playing in the CFL. He scored 32 touchdowns in 10 games with the BC Lions this spring.

The wide receivers were Jaelon Acklin of Western Illinois and St. Francis Xavier’s Kaion Julien-Grant. Both receivers have spent the last three years playing in the CFL.

The tight ends were San Diego State’s Kahale Warring and Texas A&M’s Ricky Seals-Jones. Warring has spent time with six NFL teams and he was recently selected by the DC Defenders for the XFL’s upcoming spring season.

Seals-Jones is the most notable player among last week’s tryouts. He has played with four NFL teams, hauling in 90 receptions for 1,044 yards with 10 touchdowns in 54 career games (15 starts).

These five players are likely being considered as end-of-season reserve/future contract candidates. Denver will sign players to reserve/future contracts at the end of the regular season in January.

Browns tryout 6 including TE Jace Sternberger and FB/H Clint Ratkovich

The Browns tried out 6 players today, including 2019 third rounders Jace Sternberger and Kahale Warring, and hybrid back Clint Ratkovich.

The Cleveland Browns continue to look for any sort of churn to the bottom of their roster and practice squad, trying out six players today. Already twice this season, the Browns have signed two players from tryouts to their practice squad. First, it was former Miami Redhawk safety Mike Brown who won a spot, then just this week wide receiver Cyril Grayson worked his way onto the practice squad from a tryout.

Most notably, the Browns tried out two tight ends Jace Sternberger and Kahale Warring, who were both third round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft. This comes as the Browns have ruled David Njoku out for a second straight game. Another player of interest is former Northern Illinois versatile fullback Clint Ratkovich, who suffered a devastating injury during a pre-draft workout with the Green Bay Packers in April that led to him going undrafted.

Quarterback Reid Sinnett, linebacker Ron’Dell Carter, and center Beau Benzschawel rounded out the rest of those who tried out. Again, there has been movement on the practice squad the past two times the Browns have held tryouts, so we could see movement again.

Saints release tight end Kahale Warring to open roster spot for Brandon Dillon

The Saints released veteran tight end Kahale Warring as a corresponding move to the addition of free agent Brandon Dillon:

There’s your answer: the New Orleans Saints earned some raised eyebrows with the signing of free agent tight end Brandon Dillon, which came as a surprise given the number of players already under contract at the position. But now we know they’re swapping one tight end for another in waiving Kahale Warring, who was signed in late May following tryouts at rookie minicamps. Warring’s release was reported on Wednesday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire.

Warring was competing alongside other tight ends like Juwan Johnson, J.P. Holtz (also signed this offseason), and undrafted rookie Lucas Krull for a coveted roster spot behind Taysom Hill, Nick Vannett, and Adam Trautman. The team must have decided to go in a different direction after getting a closer look at him, and now Dillon will be in the mix for training camp. It’s a tough turn for his career after injuries sapped the sky-high athleticism Warring flashed in college; I’ll admit I was a big fan of his coming out of San Diego State. The Saints had high hopes for him, too, having tried to snag Warring off of waivers last year.

It’s going to be tough to win that fourth roster no matter who is on the roster — if it even exists. The Saints have typically kept just three tight ends on the 53-man roster, occasionally stashing a fourth on their practice squad, so those players on the fringe like Dillon, Johnson, Holtz, and Krull need to do more than outshine each other. They’ve got to convince the coaching staff that carrying a fourth tight end on the active roster is worth the trouble. It’s just one more subplot to watch when the team regroups for training camp in late July.

Texans’ 2019 draft class may have led to downfall of the Bill O’Brien era

The downfall of the Bill O’Brien era with the Houston Texans may actually have started with the 2019 NFL draft.

The Bill O’Brien era may have gone downhill when the Houston Texans traded two first-round picks and a second-round selection as part of a compensation package to acquire Miami Dolphins left tackle Laremy Tunsil.

The Texans’ top-100 selections were effectively gutted for the 2020 and 2021 drafts — all because O’Brien had influence over the five-man general managing council following the firing of Brian Gaine on June 7, 2019. Senior vice president of football administration Chris Olson may have been the interim general manager, but O’Brien was calling the shots.

However, the downfall of O’Brien’s era as coach may not have been the Tunsil trade. Rather, it may have been the 2019 NFL draft when Gaine was still in control.

According to Pete Prisco from CBS Sports, the Texans had a C-minus grade after that draft, but in a reassessment, Prisco gives them a D.

The Skinny: They had seven picks, but just one — first-round offensive tackle Tytus Howard — is a lock to start this year. Second-round corner Lonnie Johnson was traded to the Chiefs this year after playing both corner and safety for the Texans. Second-round round guard Max Scharping has started and will compete this year for a job.

Initially analysts declared the Texans reached for Howard after the Philadelphia Eagles grabbed tackle Andre Dillard the pick prior. Howard made the Pro Football Writers of America’s all-rookie team and has had a solid career since while Dillard has sailed into bust territory.

The Texans had four picks in the top-100 with back-to-back second-rounders in cornerback Lonnie Johnson and guard-tackle Max Scharping. Neither player manifest as a starter for the Texans.

However, that wasn’t the worst selection of the top-100 that year.

How I did: I thought third-round tight end Kahale Warring had a chance to be special, but he didn’t work out. I questioned taking Howard, and he’s been just OK. I liked the pick of Johnson, but he’s now gone.

Warring didn’t see the field until 2020, and he only caught three passes for 35 yards in his seven games with the Texans. Consider running backs Damien Harris, Alexander Mattison, and receiver Miles Boykin were all in the neighborhood of where Houston picked Warring.

The Texans’ other selections were fifth-round defensive end Charles Omenihu, who was traded last year, sixth-round cornerback Xavier Crawford, who was waived after over a month into his rookie season, and seventh-round fullback Cullen Gillaspia, who only played two seasons with the team.

With just one starter developing out of the 2019 class, the Texans didn’t have the homegrown talent to replace departing veterans. Adding general manager duties to O’Brien only doomed his tenure with the Texans.

Bills add Kahale Warring to practice squad, who was cut multiple times recently

#Bills add Kahale Warring to practice squad, who was cut multiple times recently:

The Buffalo Bills announced their initial practice squad on Wednesday. In that, the team included 15 players that had spent training camp with the team, such as rookie draft pick Rachad Wildgoose and quarterback Jake Fromm.

But the Bills left one spot open and have now filled it with a player who has been around the block the past two weeks.

The team announced on Thursday that the 16th and final practice squad slot went to tight end Kahale Warring.

Warring, 24, hasn’t clicked yet in the NFL. So much so that his past 10 days have been pretty crazy.

Originally selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Houston Texans. Warring was the No. 86 selection, which was 11 spots before Buffalo went on to take their current starter, Dawson Knox, off the board.

On Aug. 23, Warring released by the Texans.

After being cut, he was claimed off waivers by the New England Patriots the following day. More than short lived.

After a practice, the Patriots let him go by Aug. 27.

Once again, Warring was claimed on waivers by the Indianapolis Colts. Upon their final roster cuts, Warring was once again released by the Colts on Tuesday.

The Bills did not claim him off of waivers, however, he is now in Buffalo via free agency.

In Houston, Warring was placed on injured reserve out of training camp with a concussion and never played as a rookie. In 2020, he again was placed on IR in September and finally got on the field in November.

His impact was very minimal.

On seven targets in seven games played, Warring had three catches for 35 yards. Eventually the Texans cut him a few weeks ago, which began his cross-country road trip.

Considering how close Knox and Warring were drafted, it’s likely that the Bills scouted him pre-2019 draft.

Colts claim TE Kahale Warring off waivers

Colts claimed TE Kahale Warring off of waivers.

The Indianapolis Colts claimed tight end Kahale Warring off of waivers from the New England Patriots, the team announced Saturday.

The Colts have been trying to get Warring on the roster. They reportedly put a claim in on him last week when the Patriots initially grabbed him from the waiver wire.

An athletic tight end, Warring was a third-round pick with the Houston Texans in the 2019 NFL draft. He missed his rookie season due to injury, spending the entirety of it on the injured reserve list.

Warring appeared in seven games during the 2020 season. He recorded three receptions for 35 yards.

The San Diego State product will join a tight end room that includes Jack Doyle, Mo Alie-Cox and 2021 fourth-round pick Kylen Granson.

Saints submitted unsuccessful waiver claim for TE Kahale Warring

The Saints submitted a waiver claim for ex-Texans TE Kahale Warring, but the Patriots got to him first:

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbyahgz6p2j3xp7 player_id=none image=https://saintswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Well that’s frustrating. The New Orleans Saints need more bodies at the tight end position after injuries sidelined Garrett Griffin, Adam Trautman and Nick Vannett. Only Juwan Johnson and Ethan Wolf were available for Tuesday’s practice session. Expect some free agents to try out this week so they can at least field a full depth chart while Trautman and Vannett recover from their injuries.

But it stings to miss on a potential addition like this. ESPN’s Field Yates reports that the Saints submitted a waiver claim for former Houston Texans tight end Kahale Warring, but they were leapfrogged by the New England Patriots. The NFL is using the same order for draft selections in the waiver wire this time of year, so New England (at No. 15) gets priority ahead of New Orleans (at No. 28). Yates adds that the Indianapolis Colts (No. 21) also submitted a waiver claim, so there was no chance Warring would have made it to the Saints.

Missing out on Warring isn’t a world-ending problem. He’s only appeared in seven games over the last two years while dealing with injuries. But the Saints are so thin at the position right now that they could use all the help they can get even for just a few weeks. Keep an eye out for any new arrivals in the days ahead.

Patriots claim former Texans TE Kahale Warring off waivers

The Patriots are still looking for tight end help.

The New England Patriots made a slew of moves on Tuesday as the league required roster’s to be cut down to 80.

After the team released four players, Bill Belichick claimed tight end Kahale Warring off of waivers from the Houston Texans, as they’ve struggled with injuries at the position so far this preseason.

Warring was a third-round pick in 2019 out of San Diego State. He missed all of his rookie season after being placed on injured reserve before the first game. And, in 2020, after playing only special teams snaps in Week 1, he was placed on injured reserve again, returning in Week 11.

In his seven total games last year, Warring recorded just three receptions for 35 yards.

Since training camp started, the Patriots have lost Dalton Keene and Troy Fumagalli to injured reserve. Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith, the team’s big free agent acquisitions this offseason, have also been sidelined for some time with different injuries. On top of that, Matt LaCosse, who was returning from a COVID-19 opt-out, has been out after taking a blow to the head in joint practices with the Eagles last week.

It’s a long shot that Warring makes the roster at this point, but the Patriots are taking a flyer on a former third-round pick who could make some plays in this third preseason game, and, potentially, find a spot on the practice squad.

Texans to cut former 2019 third-round TE Kahale Warring

The Houston Texans have decided to move on from former 2019 third-round tight end Kahale Warring.

The Houston Texans are moving on from another one of the draft picks from the Bill O’Brien era.

According to Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790, the Texans will be cutting former 2019 third-round tight end Kahale Warring.

Warring played four snaps against the Dallas Cowboys in the Texans’ 20-14 win — a game where the Texans sought to get all of their rostered tight ends involved from Jordan Akins, Pharaoh Brown, Ryan Izzo, Antony Auclair, Paul Quessenberry, and fifth-round rookie Brevin Jordan.

Coach David Culley said after the game on Saturday night they would have to “look at the video” to properly comment on how the tight ends played.

“Individually, it’s hard for me to say,” Culley said. “I’ll have to look at the video but I thought they did a nice job. There weren’t any errors or anything that really kept us from being able to do what we needed to do. We just have to look at the video.”

The Texans evidently did, and they determined it would be best to move on from Warring, who has caught three passes for 35 yards on seven targets through seven career games.

Houston Texans 2021 player profile: TE Kahale Warring

Houston Texans tight end Kahale Warring has immense pressure to perform in 2021. Can the former 2019 third-round pick acclimate to the NFL?

Kahale Warring is one of five players remaining from the 2019 draft class for the Houston Texans. But unlike his draftmates in Tytus Howard, Lonnie Johnson Jr, Max Scharping and Charles Omenihu, Warring is still trying to find his niche on the Texans despite being selected with the 86th pick in the third round.

Can Warring finally crack the tight end rotation as he enters his third year in the league? A preview of Warring ahead of the 2021 NFL season.
