How Georgia basketball transfers did in 2021-2022

How did all nine of Georgia’s 2021 basketball transfers do at their new schools in 2021-2022?

Georgia men’s basketball had a disappointing 2021-2022 season. The Bulldogs finished 6-26 and won one SEC conference game.

Georgia parted ways with head coach Tom Crean following the season and hired Florida head coach Mike White to the same position.

Georgia’s 2021-2022 season was poor due to a variety of reasons. Injuries did not help the cause either. Key FAU transfer Jailyn Ingram missed much of the 2021-2022 season with an injury. Georgia’s only returning starter, P.J. Horne, missed the entire season with a right knee injury.

The Bulldogs returned almost no production and experience from the 2020-2021 team. Georgia added several transfers, but lost a number of valuable pieces to the transfer portal.

Here’s how all nine of Georgia’s 2021 basketball transfers did at their new schools in 2021-2022:

LSU basketball defeats Georgia in overtime

The LSU Tigers had to go to overtime against Georgia, but squeezed out a 94-92 win behind 26 points from Cam Thomas.

The LSU Tigers basketball team defeated the Georgia Bulldogs 94-92 in overtime on Wednesday inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

The Tigers entered the game with a 6-2 record and were coming off an 83-79 loss at Florida last Saturday, while Georgia came in at 7-1, with the lone loss coming to Mississippi State last week.

LSU improves to 7-2 with the win. Freshman Cameron Thomas scored 26 total points to lead the Tigers to the two point victory. Eight of his 26 came in overtime. Thomas’ 26 points came on 5-of-17 shooting in 35 minutes of action.

The game was tied at 42 going into halftime. Both teams scored 38 in the second half to go to extra time. Tigers guard Javonte Smart hit back to back three pointers to send the game to overtime. He finished the game with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting in 39 minutes on the court.

LSU sophomore forward Trendon Watford scored 17 of his own to help lead the Tigers to a big SEC win on 6-of-9 shooting. Aundre Hyatt scored six points off the bench for the Tigers in the win.

Justin Kier led Georgia in scoring with 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting including a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line.

The Tigers shot 44.3% from the floor on 31-of-70 shooting as a team. Georgia shot 47.9% on 34-of-71 field goals made in the loss.

Georgia had the upper hand behind the three point line as the team shot 34.3% to LSU’s 33.3%. The Bulldogs’ largest lead was 10 points, while LSU’s largest lead was 7.

Both teams shot 66.7% from the free throw line. Coming in, both teams were gaining steam in the paint, and Wednesday showed that the Tigers continue to get better in that area on the court.

The win pushes LSU to 2-1 in SEC play. Currently, the Tigers are tied for fourth place in the conference standings with No. 9 Tennessee, Florida and Mississippi State.

Up next, LSU travels to Columbia, Missouri, to face the No. 13 Missouri Tigers on Saturday. Tip off is slated for 7:30 pm CST on SEC Network.

How Georgia basketball’s 2020 recruiting class ranks nationally

Georgia basketball rises multiple spots in national college basketball 2020 recruiting rankings.

Following the expected news of Georgia basketball’s star freshman shooting guard Anthony Edwards leaving UGA after one year for the NBA Draft, junior forward Rayshaun Hammonds announced he will also be leaving in hopes of NBA glory.

The Dawgs’ third year head coach Tom Crean will need to replace the 32 points and 12.6 rebounds a game that Edwards and Hammonds produced last season.

Crean’s 2020 recruiting class isn’t quite what his 2019 class was, finishing 11th in all of college basketball (big thanks to Edwards), but it’s starting to attract some attention.

The Dawgs currently have one more spot open for their 2020-21 roster with seven players leaving and six players coming in.

The top man headlining Georgia’s 2020 recruiting class is point guard K.D. Johnson. Johnson is a 4-star recruit out of Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia. He’s listed at 6-foot-1, 170 pounds and is 247Sports number 17 point guard in the country for the 2020 class.  Johnson broke the top-100 national recruits, recently rising 34 spots to the 93rd best player in the country. Check out some of Johnson’s highlights here.

Another big signing for the Bulldogs this offseason was power forward Josh Taylor.  Taylor, the 6-foot-8, 200 pound power forward out of Norcross, Georgia, is rated as the 24th best power forward in the 2020 class, and the 120th best overall player.

Jonathan Ned, Mikal Starks and Tyron McMillan round out the remaining signees for the 2020 class, along with graduate transfer Justin Kier from George Mason University.

Ned, Starks and McMillan are all coming to Athens from junior colleges and should be nice additions for the Dawgs.  Ned is listed as a 6-foot-9, 200 pound small forward, Starks is listed as a 6-foot-0, 180 pound point guard and McMillan is listed as a 6-foot-8, 225 pound power forward.

Starks and Ned both played at Eastern Florida State College where they excelled as teammates. The two signed their letter of intent together this past November.

Kier averaged 9.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists for his senior season at George Mason.  Kier should add some great playmaking ability and leadership to a very young Bulldog team.

The Dawgs 2020 recruiting class still has one spot open and is currently ranked 28th in the nation by 247Sports.  It will be tough losing as much talent as they are, but Crean is holding his own in the nation’s recruiting battle, acquiring some very solid players.

Georgia basketball lands graduate transfer from George Mason

On Sunday, the Georgia basketball program landed Justin Kier, a transfer guard from George Mason.

On Sunday, Tom Crean and the Georgia basketball program landed a graduate transfer from George Mason.

Justin Kier, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound guard chose to commit to Georgia over Minnesota and NC State.

In nine games last season for the Patriots, Kier averaged 9.6 points and 3.6 rebounds. He missed time due to foot injuries.

In the 2018-19 season, Kier averaged 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds as a junior.

Kier will look to fill the void left by projected No. 1 overall draft choice Anthony Edwards.
