NSAC suspends Yancy Medeiros, Justin Jaynes for marijuana use – despite no longer punishing fighters for marijuana use

While the NSAC has elected to stop punishing fighters for marijuana use, two athletes were today suspended for tests prior to the change.

LAS VEGAS – While the Nevada State Athletic Commission in July elected to stop punishing fighters for marijuana use, two athletes were today suspended for positive tests collected prior to the change in policy.

At today’s monthly meeting at the Grant Sawyer Office Building, commissioners issued four-and-a-half month suspensions to both lightweight [autotag]Yancy Medeiros[/autotag] and featherweight [autotag]Justin Jaynes[/autotag].

Medeiros was also fined a total of $2,690.72, while Jaynes was ordered to pay a total of $1,245.36. Both amounts included prosecution fees.

A fan-favorite lightweight with a history of entertaining scraps, Medeiros (15-8 MMA, 8-6 UFC) recently concluded an eight-year stint under the UFC banner. While he collected a handful of performance bonuses during his octagon run, the Hawaiian ended his time on a four-fight slide after dropping bouts with Damir Hadzovic, Lando Vannata, Gregor Gillespie, and Donald Cerrone.

Medeiros previously had a 2013 win over Yves Edwards overturned to a no contest by the Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Authority after testing positive for marijuana. Medeiros’ current suspension, stemming from the UFC Fight Night 190 loss to Hadzovic, ends on Nov. 9.

Meanwhile, Jaynes (16-8 MMA, 1-4 UFC), 32, debuted for the UFC in June 2020, picking up a “Performance of the Night” bonus for a 41-second stoppage of Frank Camacho. However, he was recently released from the organization after subsequently dropping consecutive fights to Charles Rosa, Devonte Smith, Gabriel Benitez, and Gavin Tucker.

Jaynes’ suspension also ends on Nov. 9

In addition to those two orders, the commission elected to uphold temporary suspensions of [autotag]Chris Barnett[/autotag], [autotag]Rodrigo Nascimento[/autotag], and [autotag]Daniel Pineda[/autotag] pending the resolution of their complaints, all of which are expected to be resolved at the commission’s September meeting.

The 35-year-old Barnett (21-7 MMA, 0-1 UFC) debuted for the UFC in May, suffering a second-round submission loss to longtime veteran heavyweight Ben Rothwell. “Beastboy” stepped in on a little more than one week’s notice for that matchup after Rothwell lost a pair of targeted opponents for the UFC Fight Night 188 clash.

Barnett was suspended following an adverse finding for carboxy THC, indicating marijuana use.

Brazil’s Nascimento picked up a second-round TKO win over fellow heavyweight Alan Baudot at July’s UFC on ESPN 26 event. It was Nascimento’s third UFC appearance after making his way to the promotion with a submission win at Dana White’s Contender Series 22 in 2019.

Nascimento’s test indicated the presence of ritalinic acid, a metabolite of methylphenidate, a banned stimulant.

The 36-year-old Pineda (27-14 MMA, 5-4 UFC) was struggling against Andre Fili at June’s UFC Fight Night 190 before being poked in the eye in the second round, when doctors declared him unable to continue. As a result, the bout was declared a no contest.

His post-fight test was flagged for the presence of amphetamine, a banned stimulant.

Pineda previously ran afoul of the NSAC while he was competing under the PFL banner. After being flagged for an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio in his system, Pineda admitted to the use of a banned substance and saw wins over Jeremy Kennedy and Movlid Khaybulaev overturned to no contests. Pineda was also suspended six months and pulled from the 2019 PFL championship fight with Lance Palmer, where he could have won $1 million.

UFC parts way with Ryan Benoit, Yancy Medeiros, and others

Four fighters are no longer on the UFC roster.

The UFC has once again trimmed its roster.

Four fighters have parted ways with the promotion after recently losses, MMA Junkie has confirmed through people with knowledge of the situation.

With Dana White’s Contender Series, and the influx of UFC signings that comes with it, right around the corner, it’s possible the promotion is adjusting its numbers in anticipation.

Check out the recent UFC departures below. The roster moves, unless explicitly noted, are not necessarily a “release.” The UFC may have elected not to re-sign certain fighters who were at the end of their contracts.

Justin Jaynes bet all his UFC Fight Night 190 show money on himself, doesn’t care what you think

“It’s not your money. Let me bet what I wanna bet.” To be exact, it’s $25,000.

[autotag]Justin Jaynes[/autotag] will make the walk for his UFC Fight Night 190 bout with Charles Rosa at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time, and let’s just there is way too much riding on the line for the second fight of a lackluster card.

“I’m putting my entire fight contract on myself, and my coaches are doing that, as well,” Jaynes said in an interview with Overtime Heroics. “I’m betting close to ($25,000) that I’m winning my fight because that’s how much I believe in myself. This is all in for me and if I lose this fight, I do not get paid, and my coaches do not get paid either.”

The latest BetMGM odds have Jaynes, who enters on a three-fight losing streak, listed as a slight +145 underdog.

As you can imagine, Jaynes has heard from a lot of people on social media since the news of his wager first surfaced this week. They think this is an incredibly ballsy or incredibly dumb move on is part.

Either way, Jaynes doesn’t care. And he made that very clear in a video he posted Friday on Instagram.

“I just wanna tell everyone I really appreciate the positive energy I’m receiving and the negative energy I’m receiving, but at the end of the day I really just don’t give a f*ck,” Jaynes said. “It’s not your money. Let me bet what I wanna bet. I believe in myself, I believe in my coaching staff, I believe in my ability, I believe in my full training camp. …

“I’m taking a risk. My job is on the line, my UFC career is on the line, all the money that I’m gonna be making in this fight is on the line, and I love it. But I do wanna reiterate: I don’t give a f*ck what any of you think. I’m getting these messages, ‘Oh my God, you’re about to be broke.’ Motherf*cker, I was broke before. If I lose, I’ll be broke again, and I’ll figure it out. It’s not that serious to me.”

Even if he doesn’t care one way or the other, here’s hoping the MMA gods bestow good fortune on Jaynes. For what it’s worth, Rosa has alternated wins and losses in his past 10 fights – and he’s coming off a loss.

You can watch Jaynes’ full video message below:

Charles Rosa vs. Justin Jaynes booked for UFC’s June 26 show

The lineups for the UFC’s summer shows continue to build, and a featherweight bout is the latest addition to the June 26 card.

The lineups for the UFC’s summer shows continue to build, and a featherweight bout is the latest addition to the June 26 card.

[autotag]Charles Rosa[/autotag] (13-5 MMA, 4-5 UFC) will try to get back on track when he takes on [autotag]Justin Jaynes[/autotag] (16-7 MMA, 1-3 UFC) on the card, MMA Junkie was told by a person with knowledge of the booking. The person requested anonymity because the UFC has not yet made a formal announcement of the matchup.

The UFC’s June 26 show does not yet have an officially announced venue or location, and no broadcast plans have been released.

After a 9-0 start to his pro career, Rosa signed with the UFC in 2014. It’s been a constant up-and-down battle for him in the promotion. The Boston-area native has alternated wins and losses throughout his nine-fight UFC run.

Of Rosa’s five UFC losses, though, three against Dennis Siver, Yair Rodriguez and Shane Burgos have picked up $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonuses. He also has a “Performance of the Night” bonus for a submission of Manny Bermudez in 2019.

Most recently, Rosa dropped a unanimous decision to Darrick Minner in February on the heels of a split call win over Kevin Aguilar in June 2020.

Justin Jaynes vs. Devonte Smith

Jaynes is in dire need of a win. The former WXC lightweight champion came to the UFC in 2020 and picked up a 41-second knockout of Frank Camacho for a $50,000 bonus right out of the gate.

But it’s been tough sledding for the Las Vegas-based Michigan native since then. Jaynes has dropped three straight with a submission loss to Justin Tucker, a TKO loss to Gabriel Benitez and, most recently, a TKO loss to Devonte Smith in February.

With the addition, the UFC’s June 26 lineup now includes

  • Maxim Grishin vs. Ovince Saint Preux
  • Anthony Hernandez vs. Punahele Soriano
  • Tim Elliott vs. Su Mudaerji
  • Michel Prazeres vs. Shavkat Rakhmonov
  • Justin Jaynes vs. Charles Rosa

UFC Fight Night 184: Justin Jaynes suffers nasty eye injury, which ends fight vs. Devonte Smith

The cageside official took just a few seconds to wave off UFC Fight Night 184’s featured prelim bout.

Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 184 featured prelim ended due to a gruesome eye injury.

The 160-pound catchweight fight between [autotag]Devonte Smith[/autotag] and short-notice replacement [autotag]Justin Jaynes[/autotag] was waved off at the 3:38 mark of Round 2 following an assessment by the cageside physician at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

The damage occurred after Smith (10-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) took Jaynes (16-6 MMA, 1-2 UFC) to the canvas. From side control, Smith leaned on Jaynes’ face and landed short elbows. Smith unsuccessfully worked for a rear-naked choke and he rose back to his feet. Referee Keith Peterson allowed the grounded Jaynes to return to his feet to square off with the standing Smith.

Immediately after he signaled the restart, Peterson called timeout, as Jaynes sported nasty, purple-blue swelling under his left eye. The doctor took less than five seconds to give his assessment. He saw enough and the fight was called.

The victory punches Smith’s ticket back into the win column following a loss in August 2019 to Khama Worthy. Smith had not competed since, as he spent 19 months recovering from a torn Achilles and the death of his sister, Dariene.

With Alex da Silva out, Justin Jaynes has stepped in to fight Saturday in Las Vegas.

One week ago, [autotag]Justin Jaynes[/autotag] didn’t have a fight on the books. Now, he’s fighting Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

After Alex da Silva withdrew from UFC Fight Night 184 due to undisclosed reasons, Jaynes (16-6 MMA, 1-2 UFC) was offered the open lightweight slot against [autotag]Devonte Smith[/autotag] (10-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC), which he since accepted.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the booking Monday but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Jaynes made his promotional debut in June 2020 when he knocked out Frank Camacho in 41 seconds. Following his emphatic first impression, Jaynes has lost back-to-back outings vs. Gavin Tucker and Gabriel Benitez. Both losses came inside the distance.
