Report: Texas A&M linebacker Jurrientè Davis enters transfer portal for third time

Texas A&M graduate student linebacker Jurrientè Davis has reportedly recorded a hat trick by entering the NCAA Transfer Portal for the third time in his career.

Texas A&M graduate student linebacker Jurrientè Davis has reportedly recorded a hat trick by entering the NCAA Transfer Portal for the third time in his career.

Per 247Sports national college football reporters Chris Hummer & Matt Zenitz, Davis entered the portal on Tuesday afternoon. After playing only three games for the Aggies, he took a redshirt season in 2023 and maintains one year of eligibility remaining.

Davis tallied four tackles for Texas A&M in a 52-10 season-opening win against New Mexico on Sept. 2. He played the following week at Miami but did not make an impact on the stat sheet. The well-traveled linebacker added two tackles during a 47-3 win against the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Sept. 16.

JD is 6-foot-1 and 235 pounds and graduated from Dudley High School in Greensboro, N.C. He began his career at Hutchinson Community College, transferred to Middle Tennesee in 2021 and played for coach Deion “Prime Time” Sanders at Jackson State in 2022.

Final injury report ahead of Texas A&M vs. Miami

Here is the final injury report ahead of Texas A&M’s Week 2 road battle vs. Miami on Saturday afternoon

Texas A&M (1-0) is just one sleep away from their Week 2 road matchup vs. Miami after defeating New Mexico 52-10 last Saturday in one of their more dominant season openers during Jimbo Fisher’s tenure with the program.

Behind the arm of starting quarterback Conner Weigman (18/23, 236 yards, five touchdowns), with three of his touchdowns going to sophomore wide receiver Noah Thomas, new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino has the Aggies rolling on all cylinders, while the impressive debut for cornerback Josh DeBerry (10 tackles, one sack, one interception) was a sense of comfort for every Aggie fan unsure of the defensive backfield depth.

Earlier this week, Fisher answered a bevy of questions regarding the upcoming matchup with the Hurricanes while opining on the current injury slate the Aggies are dealing with before making their way to South Beach. First off, transfer linebacker Jurriente Davis, who finished the opener with four tackles, left the game with a minor injury, described as being “banged up” according to Fisher, is probable to return to action on Saturday.

On the offensive line, starting tackle Reuben Fatheree, who was listed as the 2nd-unit left tackle against New Mexico, was replaced at his original right tackle spot by freshman OL Chase Bisontis, who performed well in his debut. Fatheree should be ready to go tomorrow, but as we all know, Fisher won’t release the official depth chart until game time.

Lastly, freshman wide receiver Micah Tease is suspended indefinitely after his arrest, and no announcement has been made regarding his return to the lineup.

Texas A&M will face the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, Sept. 9, which will air on ABC at 2:30 p.m. CT.

Initial injury report ahead of Texas A&M vs. Miami

Here is the initial injury report for Texas A&M before heading to Miami, Florida, to take on the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon

Texas A&M (1-0) is just a couple of days removed from their opening season victory over New Mexico, defeating the Lobos 52-10 in one of their more dominant season openers during Jimbo Fisher’s tenure with the program.

Behind the arm of starting quarterback Conner Weigman (18/23, 236 yards, five touchdowns), with three of his touchdowns going to sophomore wide receiver Noah Thomas, while the impressive debut for cornerback Josh DeBerry (10 tackles, one sack, one interception) was a sense of comfort for every Aggie fan unsure of the defensive backfield depth.

On Monday, Head Coach Jimbo Fisher once again sat down with the media to reflect on the win while officially shifting focus to Saturday’s road test vs. the Miami Hurricanes, who are coming off their blowout victory after defeating Miami (OH) 38-3 last Friday. Most importantly, he provided a brief update concerning the Aggies’ injury report before they leave for Florida.

Early reports last week indicated that starting center Bryce Foster would potentially miss the season opener as he returned from a previous minor injury. Still, after starting and finishing the game, he looked as healthy as he’s been since his freshman season. Starting right tackle Reuben Fatheree dressed out for the game. Still, he needed another week to make his way back to the starting lineup, and interestingly enough, he was listed as the second-team left tackle as opposed to his regular right tackle position.

Lastly, transfer linebacker Jurriente Davis, who left Saturday’s game with a minor injury, is “banged up,” according to Fisher, but should be able to return as soon as Saturday.

Texas A&M will face the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, Sept. 9, which will air on ABC at 2:30 p.m. CT.

Texas A&M 2023 college football season countdown: No. 22 Jurriente Davis

Graduate transfer linebacker Jurriente Davis’ unique skillset will allow him to thrive as an off-the-ball linebacker with Texas A&M, while adding much needed depth at the position.

Fear not, Aggie fans, meaningful college football is just around the corner, with the start of the 2023 season under a month away! Here at Aggies Wire, we’ll be counting down by looking at each Texas A&M football player that corresponds to the number of days left till the start of the football season.

With 22 days until kickoff, we’re looking at No. 22 for the Maroon and White: graduate transfer linebacker Jurriente Davis.

The Maroon and White were in linebacker limbo for much of the offseason in the aftermath of three notable departures to the transfer portal. Besides Edgerrin Cooper and Chris Russell Jr., depth at the linebacker spot remained a notable question mark heading into the 2023 campaign. Behind the aforementioned two was sophomore Martrell Harris Jr. and freshman Taurean York, who have intriguing upside but are nonetheless young and less experienced.

That is until the Aggies added the No. 1 ranked transfer portal linebacker in Davis back in April, providing the unit with a huge boon in experience and versatility.

The former Jackson State product finished his 2022 season with 58 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and a career-best 75.3 defensive grade according to Pro Football Focus. Davis should slot in seamlessly and thrive in defensive coordinator DJ Durkin’s scheme as an off-the-ball linebacker, primarily at the Will position in the Aggies’ 4-2-5 defensive scheme.

Given his knack for bringing down opposing defenders, he should pair nicely with Cooper and Russell’s leadership atop the unit, and truth be told Davis’ own experience will prove invaluable for a defense that is aiming to improve from its 124th-ranked run defense in 2022. Now, there may surely be a learning curve as Davis adjusts to playing against FBS competition, but he by all means has the skillset to make that transition a smooth one.

Texas A&M Football 2023 Position Preview: Linebackers; limited depth remains a question mark

Despite having two experienced starters, the Aggies’ linebacker depth remains a notable question mark heading into the 2023 season.

Texas A&M kicks off the 2023 college football season in just under two months, and while the offseason is nearing its conclusion sooner than later, it’s time to preview what Jimbo Fisher and his staff will be working with from a roster perspective.

The Aggies’ linebacker depth was a substantial question mark heading into spring football, as a pair of returning starters headlines the group with minimal depth to account for behind them. A big addition through the transfer portal helps in the demand for depth, and their performance as a group will be key for the Maroon and White to improve in defending the run.

Returning production: Edgerrin Cooper returns for his senior season in College Station after appearing in 11 games with eight starts for the Aggies in 2022. He recorded 61 tackles, including eight for a loss, five pass deflections, one interception, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. According to Pro Football Focus, he finished with a 66.1 overall defensive grade, including a 66.7 run defense grade, a 70.4 pass-rush grade, and a 59.7 coverage grade.

Cooper joins Chris Russell Jr. as the experienced leader of the linebacker unit. In 2022, Russell appeared in 12 games for the Aggies, recording 66 total tackles, one forced fumble, and one defensive touchdown. As the Mike linebacker, he recorded a 63.9 overall defensive grade, including a 70.2 run defense grade, a 51.9 pass-rush grade, and a 58.5 coverage grade in 2022 per PFF.

Sophomore Martrell Harris Jr. rounds out the three returners from last year’s campaign, appearing in 12 games while recording seven total tackles and one forced fumble. With just 54 total snaps, he finished with a 64.4 overall defensive grade, a 60.7 run defense grade, and an 86.8 pass-rush grade, according to PFF.

Departures:  Notable linebacker departures from 2022 include Andre White Jr., Tarian Lee Jr., and Ish Harris. White recorded 35 tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble in seven games. Lee recorded nine tackles in eight games, while Harris did not see the field in 2022.

Final Observation: The starting reigns are in the hands of Cooper and Russell, and the Aggies have a potentially athletic playmaker in Harris backing those two up. In adding former Jackson State product Jurriente Davis through the transfer portal, Texas A&M has a player that thrives as an off-the-ball linebacker, primarily at the Will position in the Aggies’ 4-2-5 defensive scheme.

Freshman Taurean York has flashed his upside in spring camp, but he’s a first-year nonetheless, and as we witnessed last season, throwing him into the fire will result in growing pains.

While the starters look promising on paper, and the addition of Davis gives them some much-needed depth, all it takes is for one injury to impact this unit significantly. For a defense that hopes to improve from its 124th run defense ranking in 2022, the hope is that his unit can stay healthy and build rapport throughout the season.

Texas A&M’s Jurriente Davis ranked among PFF’s top 10 returning SEC linebackers

Pro Football Focus graded the best returning linebackers in the SEC next season, and Texas A&M’s transfer addition of Jurriente Davis clocked in among the top 10.

Texas A&M’s defense is equipped to be among the SEC’s best in 2023, and according to Pro Football Focus, their unit is welcoming one of the best-graded returning linebackers into the fold.

PFF mapped the highest-graded returning linebackers in the SEC next season, and the Aggies’ transfer addition of Jurriente Davis ranked sixth among his conference counterparts with a grade of 75.3. After entering the transfer portal, the former Jackson State product announced his commitment to the Aggies in April.

Davis tallied 408 defensive snaps with the Tigers last season, with 195 snaps coming via run support, 74 in pass-rush situations, and 139 in coverage. He logged 41 tackles (31 solo) alongside nine hurries, three QB hits, and one sack.

His 75.3 defensive grade last season significantly improved from his 61.6 grade in 2021. Upon taking a granular look, Davis’ impact was felt at all levels of the defense, with a 76.7 run defense grade, a 69.5 tackling grade, and a 72.4 pass rush grade.

Davis ranked as the No.1 transfer portal linebacker before he made College Station his next home, and his top 10 PFF grade among returning SEC linebackers further illustrates the impact he’ll bring to the Maroon and White in 2023.

Adding a versatile talent like Davis helps fill out the linebacker unit immediately from a depth perspective. As we’ve covered here at Aggies Wire, he should also thrive as an off-the-ball linebacker, primarily at the Will position in the Aggies’ 4-2-5 defensive scheme.

His balanced production in run defense, coverage, and pressuring the quarterback only furthers the belief that Davis will immensely benefit defensive coordinator DJ Durkin and his unit. While some may question the learning curve in facing SEC competition, Davis’ PFF grades only illustrate that the best is yet to come with his play on the field.

Ranking the Top 5 new players on Texas A&M’s 2023 football roster

Texas A&M will have a plenty of new faces joining the football roster this season, and these are the five players who should have the most impact in 2023.

Texas A&M will rely on a promising core of returning talent to assemble a comeback season in 2023, but they’ll need help to shoulder the load.

While much conversation has been made about the number of departures from this Aggies team throughout the offseason, the Maroon and White have bolstered the roster with some key additions. As we’ve seen in an ever-evolving college football landscape, the emergence of the transfer portal can genuinely make or break a season.

That sentiment has been echoed by head coach Jimbo Fisher throughout “talkin’ season” over the last few weeks, who noted that Texas A&M would continue to remain aggressive regarding adding names to the roster.

While there is still a door open for moves to be made, the roster as it stands now is more or less situated for the coming fall season.

With that in mind, we’re ranking the top five additions to the Aggies football roster. Our ranking combines talent, experience, and impact on the area of need for this year’s team. So while one transfer addition may boast a high potential, another may be ready to play meaningful snaps come Week 1.

Texas A&M transfer LB Jurriente Davis has been working out with former Aggies LB Donnie Baggs

Former Jackson State linebacker Jurriente Davis is now an Aggie, and he’s reportedly been working with former Aggies LB Donnie Baggs this offseason.

Texas A&M has seen several former athletes enter the sports training realm after leaving the football program. Still, one name always comes to mind whenever a current Aggie player is training in the offseason, and that former standout linebacker Donnie Baggs, who from 2011-2015 recorded 92 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 12.5 tackles for loss for the Maroon and White.

After brief professional stints with the Dallas Cowboys and the CFL’s Edmonton Elks, Donnie Baggs and his partner Fendi Baggs opened Higher Ceiling Performance in Houston, Texas, specializing in training athletes from multiple disciplines, especially linebacker development.

Seen through a post on social media (Twitter), current Aggies linebacker Jurriente Davis, who transferred to the program in late April from Jackson State, was seen training with Baggs last weekend as he preps to play a significant role within Texas A&M linebacker rotation, one of the thinnest position groups on the roster.

Davis’s best collegiate season came in 2022; he ended the 2022 season recording 58 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and a career-best 75.3 PFF grade and was ranked as the No.1 linebacker in the transfer portal at the time of his transfer announcement.

Chris Russell Sr. and Edgerrin Cooper lead Texas A&M’s linebacker room, followed by critical reserves in sophomore Martrell Harris and true freshman Taurean York, making the addition of Davis, who brings tremendously valuable experience and versatility to a group that is looking to improve after an underwhelming performance in 2022. Keep putting that work in, Jurriente!

Aggies linebacker depth on the upside following spring game performance and key transfer addition

Following a promising spring game performance, the Aggies’ linebacker unit is beginning to flash its depth thanks to a key transfer portal addition.

Questions surrounded Texas A&M’s linebacker unit heading into their spring program, but after a promising performance in the Aggies’ exhibition game, alongside a big addition via the transfer portal, this position has a nice mix of talent to make an impact both now and into the future.

Heading into the Maroon and White spring game, Chris Russell Jr. and Edgerrin Cooper were handed the starting reigns for this unit and that same belief hasn’t changed. Both of these two bring much-needed experience to a position that was lacking depth through spring.

Russell is solid as the Mike linebacker, but he’s arguably better suited when playing on the move and blitzing the opposing quarterback. Cooper has excellent closing speed and can make plays in the open field. However, at 6-3 and 230 lbs, he’s not particularly imposing when it comes to his size, which means he could struggle when taking on bigger blockers.

Enter the true x-factor with the addition of Jurriente Davis, who was ranked as the No. 1 transfer portal LB out of Jackson State. While the Aggies have some very capable starters and promising youth for the future, this unit needed a splash via the transfer portal and they got one with Davis.

As we’ve covered here at Aggies Wire, Davis’s tape shows a player that thrives as an off-the-ball linebacker, primarily at the Will position in the Aggies’ 4-2-5 defensive scheme. He’s equipped to tackle what’s in front of him and provide a solid pass rush when needed thanks to his speed and downhill quickness.

Making the jump from FCS to FBS competition is a significant one, make no mistake about it, so the transition will be key to observe for Davis. I don’t think it’ll be a case of “baptism by fire” as Davis’ talent and experience should make the adjustment a smooth one.

While the trio of Russell, Cooper, and Davis shows promise for the Maroon and White in the near term, the Aggies also have a handful of bright prospects that should develop nicely in the future. Second-year Martrell Harris flashed his closing speed in the spring game, while first-year Daymion Sanford is a converted pass rusher who has length and can run.

Freshman Taurean York is a little undersized when it comes to mass (217 lbs for now), but he should easily bulk up in due time. Additionally, he has a nice grasp of the defense and he’s proven useful in coverage as one of the bright spots called out by the coaching staff during spring practice.

With still a few days left in the transfer portal it remains to be seen whether any more additions will be made to this unit. If not, then the Aggies have a promising group headlined by veterans that should make an impact this season, followed by some promising talent for the future.

How will transfer LB Jurriente Davis fit in with the Aggies defense?

Texas A&M landed the No.1 linebacker in the transfer portal on Thursday, but just how will he fit in with the Aggie’s defense next season?

Texas A&M was in linebacker limbo entering last week, and even though the Maroon and White Spring Game exhibited the potential for freshman linebacker, Taurean York, the 2023 roster had only three players ahead of him, including starters Edgerrin Cooper and Chris Russel, but after that, more youth and inexperience.

After the transfer portal reopened on Apr. 15, Linebacker, combined with cornerback, wide receiver, and offensive line rounded out the A&M’s core needs, and the No.1 ranked transfer portal LB Jurriente Davis of Jackson State took a visit to College Station, leading to his commitment to the Maroon and White on Apr. 20.

On the surface, adding a versatile option like Davis helps fill out the position immediately from a depth perspective, but due to his unique skillset, how will Aggie’s defensive coordinator and linebacker coach D.J. Durkin utilize his talents in 2023?

In a summarization from GigEm247’s Jeff Tarpley, Davis’s tape shows a player that thrives as an off-the-ball linebacker, primarily at the Will postion in the Aggies’ 4-2-5 defensive scheme. Within his scouting report for Davis, Tarpley states,

“He’s 225 pounds and needs people playing in front of him to play to his strengths. Davis wants to be able to read the play, find a gap, and shoot through it or run down a play from the backside. He’s not made to take on blockers, shed them, and get to the ball. Davis better working versus backs where he can us his upper body strength to shed them.”

Simply put, Davis is equipped to tackle what’s in front of him and provide adequate pass rush when warranted due to his speed and downhill quickness. paired with Cooper and Russell, Davis’s experience is extremely valuable, yet his jump from the FCS to the FBS level is something to definitely keep an eye on early in the season.
