Initial injury report ahead of Texas A&M vs. LSU

Here is the initial injury report ahead of Texas A&M’s season finale vs. 14th-ranked LSU on Saturday, Nov. 25.

Texas A&M (7-4, 4-3 SEC) will end its 2023 football regular season on the road against the 14th-ranked LSU Tigers (8-3, 5-2 SEC). The game comes less than two weeks after the firing of head coach Jimbo Fisher, who was two games away from finishing his sixth season at the helm.

In interim head coach Elijah Robinson’s first game in his new role, the Aggies defeated Abilene Christian, 38-10, behind a 21-3 second-half scoring run in the final game in Kyle Field this season. An all-walk-on kickoff team fielded late in the fourth quarter was truly one of the best moments you will witness all season.

As the most significant challenge of the season awaits, this team is facing zero pressure. A bowl game is guaranteed, and A&M defeated the then fifth-ranked Tigers, 38-23, last season. These teams have split the series’ last six games.

On the injury front, Robinson noted during his Monday press conference that quarterback Max Johnson, who missed the last two games due to his ongoing rehab from a rib injury, is reportedly day-to-day. Sophomore signal-caller Jaylen Henderson is 2-0 in Johnson’s place in his first two career starts.

Starting cornerback Josh DeBerry is also listed as day-to-day after missing the ACU game. Given Henderson’s impressive play, it remains uncertain whether Johnson will regain his starting position if he is healthy. Still, due to his experience as a former LSU quarterback, I have no doubt he is amped to face his former team.

Texas A&M will take on 14th-ranked LSU on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 11 a.m. CT., and the game will be carried by ESPN.

Five players to watch in Texas A&M’s Week 7 matchup vs. Tennessee

Will Jimbo Fisher end his SEC road woes? can the Aggies O-line hold up? Here are five players to watch ahead of Texas A&M vs. Tennessee.

Texas A&M (4-2, 2-1 SEC) will hit the road to face the Tennessee Volunteers (4-1, 1-1 SEC) on Saturday afternoon, as head coach Jimbo Fisher is in for one of the roughest environments the SEC has to offer.

Coming off of a bye week, Tennessee and head coach Josh Heupel has yet to find an offensive identity behind the big arm of quarterback Joe Milton, but this unit can score more than 30 plus points at any given week. At the same time, Texas A&M’s Week 6 loss to Alabama created more questions than answers, specifically concerning the Aggies’ secondary and offensive line.

However, Texas A&M’s dominant pass rush and stellar linebacker play have been a consistent bright spot despite the offense’s failure to sustain drives as of late, leaving signal caller Max Johnson’s SEC experience, especially on the road, crucial to the Aggies’ future success.

This week, we have provided several storylines to help provide the full scoop on what to expect on Saturday afternoon.

Focusing on the players that need to make this weekend, here are the five players to watch ahead of Texas A&M vs. Tennessee.

The highs and the lows from Texas A&M’s defense after losing to Alabama 26-20

The good, the bad, and the very ugly performance from Texas A&M’s defense after the Aggies 26-20 loss to Alabama on Saturday afternoon.

First off, congratulations to Alabama wide receiver Jermaine Burton for absolutely gutting the Aggies’ porous secondary for an impressive stat line of 9 receptions, 197 receiving yards, and two touchdowns, accounting for 57% of the Tide’s offense the Alabama’s 26-20 win Saturday afternoon. Seriously, bravo, young man.

Furthermore, former Boston College cornerback Josh DeBerry, who entered the program this offseason with high hopes to provide a sense of stability in the defense backfield, was responsible for 145 of Burton’s 197 receiving yards on five receptions, grading out with an anemic 49.5 coverage grade, according to PFF.

Even worse, quarterback Jalen Milroe’s 321 passing yards were virtually the result of explosive downfield passes. Burton and WR Isaiah Bond (7 rec, 96 yards, 1 TD) exposed the third level of the Aggie D for considerable gains in random spurts. What’s confusing regarding DeBerry’s performance was the lack of care to make a change from the coaching staff as the yards stacked up, as it wasn’t until the second half before Burton’s second lead-taking touchdown that he was subbed out. It makes you think.

Moving on from the bad, there were still a lot of positives to take away from the Aggies’ elite pass rush, accounting for six sacks and eight tackles for loss, totaling 20 sacks and 38 TFLs in their last three SEC matchups. Still sporting the 10th-ranked defense and eighth-ranked rushing defense, linebackers Edgerrin Cooper (11 tackles, three sacks, three TFLs), Taurean York (five tackles) and defensive linemen Fadil Diggs (five tackles, two sacks, two TFLs) and Walter Nolen (two tackles, one sack) consistently stood out in the trenches.

Focusing on Cooper, the junior standout has elevated his game to the next level, currently ranked fifth in sacks (6) and fourth in tackles for loss (12) while currently leading the team in tackles with 41 in six games. And credit to GigEm247’s Carter Karels, who noted that Cooper’s first three seasons in the program only produced 13.5 TFLs and 0.5 sacks; tremendous improvement.

While I don’t expect the pass rush to drop off anytime soon, aside from injury-related production loss, personnel changes in the secondary need to be made ahead of next week’s pivotal road matchup vs. Tennessee, whether benching DeBerry in favor of sophomore CB Deuce Harmon or altering the scheme, second-year defensive coordinator D.J Durkin has a lot of work ahead of next Saturday.

Texas A&M will travel to face the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 2:30 p.m. CT, inside Neyland Stadium (TV: CBS).

Five reasons why Texas A&M will beat Miami in Week 2

From their advantage at QB to the depth of their front seven, here are the reasons why Texas A&M will beat Miami in Week 2.

After beginning their 2023 rebound campaign with a win over New Mexico, No. 23 Texas A&M (1-0) will look toward Miami (1-0) as their first consequential matchup of the season.

It’s not an overstatement to say that whichever team walks away with a win will make serious strides regarding their turnaround efforts. Both schools are coming off 5-7 seasons, and both hired new coordinators to revive a stagnant offense. However, the Aggies should have the edge when it’s all said and done.

Regarding talent on both sides of the ball, Texas A&M holds advantages at the quarterback spot, in the receiving corps, and in their front seven on defense. Coupled with an injection of veteran leadership throughout the roster, it’s about executing their game plan and leaving no margin for error as they face a more than component foe in the Hurricanes.

Here are the reasons why Texas A&M should move to 2-0 with a win over Miami on Saturday.

Five players to watch in Texas A&M’s Week 2 road matchup vs. Miami

Here are five players to watch out for ahead of Texas A&M’s road clash with the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon.

Texas A&M’s 2023 rebound season is off to the races after Jimbo Fisher’s rejuvenated roster dismantled the visiting New Mexico Lobos 52-10 behind starting quarterback Conner Weigman’s five touchdowns, including three to breakout sophomore wide receiver Noah Thomas.

This Saturday, the Aggies’ revamped offense will now take their high-octane passing attack to South Beach as they face the Miami Hurricanes in the highly coveted Week 2.

Throughout the week, we have done our absolute best at Aggies Wire to provide you with top-notch previews of the matchup this week, ranging from the top storylines, Florida native Shemar Stewart’s return to Miami, and, of course, the key to keeping the Weigman upright in the pocket; Texas A&M’s offensive line, or the “Maroon Goons” as we call them.

But talk is cheap, and the players who take the field this weekend will determine the final results. And even though the Aggies remain a slim four-point favorite as of Thursday, the Hurricanes and second-year HC Mario Cristobal are looking for revenge after falling 17-9 in Kyle Field last fall.

Ahead of Week 2, here are the five Texas A&M players to watch before the Aggies face Miami.

Transfer cornerback Josh DeBerry had a strong debut against New Mexico

Josh DeBerry’s strong outing gives the Aggies hope some stability is coming at the cornerback position

The Aggies came out swinging with a “that’s what it should look like” win over New Mexico, and Boston College transfer Josh DeBerry might have solidified his starting spot for the next few weeks.

The cornerback position had a battle all off-season long, with Tyreek Chappell being the only one with extensive SEC experience. After losing Denver Harris and Smoke Bouie to the transfer portal, Jimbo hopped in the portal and brought in multiple defensive backs to add depth.

DeBerry, a former three-time All-ACC defensive back, was competing to play opposite Chappel against front-runner Tony Grimes and freshman Jayvon Thomas in preparation for the season opener at Kyle Field. While the Aggies did use multiple CBs throughout the game, DeBerry not only started, he had one of the better games on the defensive side of the ball.

He awarded the defensive staff’s decision to start him with a back-breaking interception with under three minutes in the second quarter and a big sack later in the game. His presence was felt all game long and noted in our Five takeaways from the game.

Josh DeBerry was brought in via the transfer portal to help shore up the losses in the secondary, and his addition is already reaping benefits. He led the Aggies with ten tackles while playing physical versus the run and the pass and was sticky in coverage. He also had 1.5 tackles for loss as well as a sack after a well-timed blitz around the corner.

Seeing someone take control of that open position early allows for some stability in the secondary before the lead into league play. DeBerry’s initial work sample for the Maroon & White is encouraging moving forward.
