Texas A&M 2023 college football season countdown: No. 22 Jurriente Davis

Graduate transfer linebacker Jurriente Davis’ unique skillset will allow him to thrive as an off-the-ball linebacker with Texas A&M, while adding much needed depth at the position.

Fear not, Aggie fans, meaningful college football is just around the corner, with the start of the 2023 season under a month away! Here at Aggies Wire, we’ll be counting down by looking at each Texas A&M football player that corresponds to the number of days left till the start of the football season.

With 22 days until kickoff, we’re looking at No. 22 for the Maroon and White: graduate transfer linebacker Jurriente Davis.

The Maroon and White were in linebacker limbo for much of the offseason in the aftermath of three notable departures to the transfer portal. Besides Edgerrin Cooper and Chris Russell Jr., depth at the linebacker spot remained a notable question mark heading into the 2023 campaign. Behind the aforementioned two was sophomore Martrell Harris Jr. and freshman Taurean York, who have intriguing upside but are nonetheless young and less experienced.

That is until the Aggies added the No. 1 ranked transfer portal linebacker in Davis back in April, providing the unit with a huge boon in experience and versatility.

The former Jackson State product finished his 2022 season with 58 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and a career-best 75.3 defensive grade according to Pro Football Focus. Davis should slot in seamlessly and thrive in defensive coordinator DJ Durkin’s scheme as an off-the-ball linebacker, primarily at the Will position in the Aggies’ 4-2-5 defensive scheme.

Given his knack for bringing down opposing defenders, he should pair nicely with Cooper and Russell’s leadership atop the unit, and truth be told Davis’ own experience will prove invaluable for a defense that is aiming to improve from its 124th-ranked run defense in 2022. Now, there may surely be a learning curve as Davis adjusts to playing against FBS competition, but he by all means has the skillset to make that transition a smooth one.
