Class: Junior

Hometown: Angleton, Texas

High School: Angleton

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 37 overall / No. 3 position / No. 4 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 57 overall / No. 6 position / No. 6 in-state

Analysis: A five-star recruit on the 247Sports composite, B.J. Foster was apart of Tom Herman’s best-ever recruiting class in 2018. After dealing with injuries last season, Foster is ready to have a breakout year and become a top defensive back in the Big 12.

The only issue is Foster broke his hand in early June punching his car in frustration. Luckily, he should be ready to go for the beginning of the season. When he is on the field, he and Caden Sterns should form one of the top safety pairings in all of college football.

A secondary unit that struggled in 2019, Foster should be a bright spot in this upcoming season. There will be a lot of pressure on the position group, needing improvement. With new defensive coordinator Chris Ash, Foster will lead the Texas defense in 2020.

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 44 overall / No. 10 position / No. 3 in-state

Analysis: After two years of waiting, Brennan Eagles is going to have his opportunity to shine as Texas’ No. 1 receiver. Listed at 6-4 and 230 pounds, he will be a perfect replacement for Collin Johnson.

A top 10 receiver in the country coming out of high school, Eagles had offers from schools such as Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State. Since arriving on campus in 2018, he has had just over 550 yards and finished third on the team in receiving yards last season.

Now, Sam Ehlinger is expected to have a new favorite target in Eagles. As the primary receiver in the offense, Eagles could blossom into one of the top players in the conference. With talents such as Jordan Whittington, Jake Smith, and Marcus Washington around him, Eagles will be a top breakout candidate on the offensive side of the ball in 2020.

Class: Junior

Hometown: Sydney, Australia

High School: Marist Catholic College Penshurst

HS ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 1 position / No. 1 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Two-star

Analysis: Coming from down under, Ryan Bujcevski will be entering his third season as the starting punter for Texas. The top-ranked punter coming out of high school according to 247Sports, Ryan Bujcevski was on the Ray Guy Award watchlist going into the 2019 season.

Unfortunately, his season was cut short after injuring his shoulder against TCU. In the nine games he played in, Bujcevski averaged 41.4 yards per punt. Three of his punts surpassed 50 yards and Bujcevski was able to pin 10 punts inside the 20-yard line.

Bujcevski will pick up where he left off in 2020. While no offense wants to see the punter on the field, having a great one can be seen as a weapon for the defense. Bujcevski will once again be one of the best in the Big 12 next season.

HS ranking (Rivals): Five-star / No. 24 overall / No. 2 position / No. 1 in-state

Analysis: After missing four games last season, Caden Sterns is expected to be fully healthy and return as the best safety in the Big 12. After a first-team All-Big 12 season during his freshman season, much is going to be expected in 2020.

Sterns’ injury saw him sitting out through a four-game stretch of West Virginia, Oklahoma, Kansas, and TCU. Texas gave up an average of 37.5 points and nearly 300 passing yards per game. His presence was missed in the Longhorns’ most crucial stretch of the season.

Now, the junior will be pairing up with B.J. Foster to create a dangerous duo at the safety positions. Chris Ash has been given a lot of talent to work with inside the Texas secondary. A unit that was torn to shreds last season, Sterns must lead the way to improve to the unit in 2020.

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 205 overall / No. 22 position / No. 19 in-state

Analysis: For the third day in a row, a junior cornerback from the Houston, Texas area is featured in our player profile spotlight. D’Shawn Jamison may be the most important out of the trio.

Not only does Jamison appear to be the top corner going into next season, but during his freshman and sophomore seasons, he has been a kick and punt returner for Texas. He has two career touchdowns, with one coming off a punt return against Kansas State in 2018, while he scored off a kickoff late in the game against Rice last season.

Jamison will continue to be a returner for the Longhorns to go along with his duties in the secondary. Being used in multiple fashions for Tom Herman, the cornerback has become a vital part of this Texas team. Jamison’s performances in returns must continue while improving with the entire secondary.

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 120 overall / No. 13 position / No. 10 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 54 overall / No. 9 position / No. 5 in-state

Analysis: Cook is another member of the Texas secondary which needs improvement going into the 2020 season. During his two seasons in Austin, Cook has played in 25 games, but only managed to get a start in seven, with six of them coming last season.

Cook’s role during his freshman season was primarily through special teams. Last season, he managed 24 tackles, a pass break up, and a forced fumble in the Red River Shootout against Oklahoma. Becoming an upperclassman and a more important piece to the secondary, our depth chart projects him to start as the Nickel corner for Chris Ash.

Texas’ secondary is loaded with talent at both the cornerback and safety position. With most players coming into their third season under Tom Herman, big things will be expected. Cook must fulfill those expectations with Caden Sterns, Jalen Green, D’Shawn Jamison, and BJ Foster if the school wants to reclaim the title ‘DBU’.

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 52 overall / No. 7 position / No. 4 in-state

Analysis: Playing in 10 games last season, Jalen Green has become one of the most important pieces to the Longhorns’ secondary. While he did miss three games last season (West Virginia, Oklahoma, and Kansas), the incoming junior became a starter under Todd Orlando.

With Chris Ash now in charge of the defense, nothing should change. The former five-star prospect will link up with D’Shawn Jamison to create on the of best cornerback duos in the Big 12. The two had eight pass breakups last season, with Green leading the team with five.

Improving from freshman to sophomore season, another leap is needed in 2020 from Green. Texas’ secondary struggled at times last season, allowing big games from quarterbacks throughout the conference. If the Longhorns want to take a step up, Green and the secondary must improve.
