Juan Thornhill recruiting Mecole Hardman to Cleveland, WR responds

Thornhill is already working to make the team better.

It hasn’t even been 24 hours since Juan Thornhill agreed to a contract with the Cleveland Browns and he is already recruiting for the team as NFL free agency continues. The Browns are looking for an upgrade at wide receiver and Thornhill’s former teammate Mecole Hardman is available and would be a good fit.

So naturally, Thornhill took to Twitter to try and convince Hardman to come to Cleveland with him. Hardman does exactly what the Browns lack in the room as he is a bonafide field stretcher with great speed. If Thornhill has his way the team isn’t done adding former Super Bowl champions to the roster.

Hardman then responded to Thornhill’s tweet to hint that he would be interested in the move to Cleveland as well:

Will the Browns look to add a wide receiver in free agency or will they wait until the 2023 NFL Draft?

Instant Reaction: Grading the Juan Thornhill free agent signing

A major roster hole has been filled in Cleveland.

On the same day the team officially announced they will part ways with John Johnson III, the Cleveland Browns signed his replacement in safety Juan Thornhill to a three-year deal for $21 million. The difference is that JJ3 is not a true free safety and that Thornhill is which is something this team has sorely needed for the past three seasons.

Thornhill has spent his entire four-year career in Kansas City where he helped the team win two Super Bowls as one of the better coverage safeties in the NFL. The Browns continue to have a good week of free agency as they fill major holes and needs before the draft in April giving them more flexibility.

Twitter reacts to the signing of S Juan Thornhill

The Browns landed Juan Thornhill in NFL free agency, and here is how Twitter reacted.

The Cleveland Browns have landed their new starting free safety in Juan Thornhill, adding him on a three-year, $21 million deal in NFL free agency. After the failures of John Johnson III, who signed as the top safety on the market two years ago, the Browns corrected their mistake to land a true post safety instead of trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

And their fanbase loves the move their franchise just made.

Here are some of the best reactions to the signing of Thornhill, as the city of Cleveland welcomes the two-time Super Bowl champion to FirstEnergy Stadium.

Chiefs free agent S Juan Thornhill signs with Browns

Two-time Super Bowl champion Juan Thornhill will play for the #Browns next season after spending four years with the #Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs lost a key starter in their secondary when safety Juan Thornhill signed with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday afternoon. Thornhill had been a fixture on the back end of the Chiefs’ defense since joining the team in 2019 as a second-round pick after playing collegiately at the University of Virginia.

In his absence, second-year safety Bryan Cook is set to take on an expanded role in Kansas City’s secondary after his impressive rookie campaign proved that he has what it takes to make plays in key situations.

Thornhill’s massive three-year $21 million payday in Cleveland was likely more than the Chiefs were willing to match and is an indication that Kansas City is comfortable with the talent they have at the safety position. The $14 million guarantee included in his new contract is sure to have played a part in any negotiations Thornhill may have had between the Chiefs and other suitors who sought his talent for the 2023 season.

The loss of Thornhill is sure to sting for many Chiefs fans who grew accustomed to the veteran’s presence during his tenure with the team, but with just a month remaining before the NFL draft, more secondary help could be on the way for Kansas City in relatively short order.

Browns land two-time Super Bowl-winning safety Juan Thornhill on three-year deal

The Browns have landed Juan Thornhill and his two Super Bowl rings.

The Cleveland Browns continue their efficient offseason, this time landing a true free safety in NFL free agency. Bringing over the two-time Super Bowl-winning defensive back Juan Thornhill on a three-year deal, the Browns have effectively replaced John Johnson III after releasing him as a post-June 1 cut. The Browns signed Thornhill to a deal worth $7 million annually, with the first two seasons fully guaranteed.

Thornhill was known coming out of college for being one of the most athletic safeties of all time, leaping to a 44-inch vertical jump and an 11-foot-9 broad jump at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine. He then ran a 4.42 40-yard dash and posted good agilities as well, finishing with a Relative Athletic Score of 9.75.

With a true post safety over the top now, some pressure will be taken off of the cornerbacks, knowing they have help deep.

The 20 best remaining players after Day 2 of NFL free agency

It’s Day 3 of free agency. A franchise LT and safety are somehow STILL available.

Fun fact: The NFL’s negotiation window might begin on Monday, with most free-agent players locked in immediately. But the new league year doesn’t actually start until today!

It’s wild to think about after seeing all these underrated trades and handsome contracts fly around, right? (Also, it’s funny knowing most of these moves aren’t 100 percent official and can technically fall through at any time.)

However, despite most of the free agent field being combed through this year, many franchise players and stars remain available. To be quite honest with you: I don’t know why. But I’ve never professed to know precisely how an NFL GM thinks.

As Day 3 of free agency rolls on, here’s an overview of the 20 top unsigned players left. (Note: I’ve said before they’ll likely not last much longer on the open market. But nothing seems assured anymore.)

The 20 best remaining players after Day 1 of NFL free agency

Most of the big fish are gone, but a lot of stars and quality starters are just waiting to be snatched up.

I know it’s tough to process while in the moment, with new agreements seemingly flying around every other minute, but not every player is signed on the first day of NFL free agency.

In fact, if we took an honest look at the proceedings, many worthwhile stars, solid contributors, and depth guys are still sitting on the board after a whirlwind first day. Even if teams like the Chicago Bears were among the bigger initial winners, and even if squads like the San Francisco 49ers continue to get richer defensively, there’s still a lot of time left before the free-agent dust settles.

Let’s take a quick look at the 20 best players remaining in 2023 NFL free agency (by my estimation) as we head into Day 2. Remember: most of these guys aren’t likened to last much longer on the open market.

One free agent at every position the Browns should target when market opens

The free agency floodgates are almost open. Who should the Browns have their eyes on?

The floodgates of free agency are about to burst as the legal tampering window is set to begin on Monday. For the Cleveland Browns, this means they have an opportunity to make a massive impact on their roster, specifically on the defensive side of the football. They have already been linked to recognizable names who will hit the market, but they have some needs on the other side of the ball as well.

As they look to get back in the playoffs in 2023 after two years off, who is one name per position the Browns could target in free agency to improve their roster?

ESPN insider says Chiefs expect to lose Mecole Hardman, Juan Thornhill in free agency

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler says the #Chiefs will have a tough time keeping some of their own free agents such as WR Mecole Hardman & S Juan Thornhill.

Fresh off of a Super Bowl LVII win, the Kansas City Chiefs have over a dozen players slated for unrestricted free agency. They’ll look to retain as many pieces as possible from their championship-winning squad, but according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, that might not be so easy.

Fowler recently reported on all the latest free agency buzz from the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, naming to players that he expects the Chiefs will have a hard time keeping.

Check it out:

The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will have a difficult time keeping several free agents. They are bracing to lose receiver Mecole Hardman, who should have a sneaky-good market despite playing just eight games last season. Some teams believe he will hit a pretty good number on a per-year average. Safety Juan Thornhill should also do very well. Some teams are looking at him as the No. 2 safety, a viable option for those who can’t afford Jessie Bates III.

Both Hardman and Thornhill were selected by Kansas City in the 2019 NFL draft and have been contributors ever since. They both share a commonality as they enter unrestricted free agency — they’re young and talented players at position groups that are considered to be weaker in both free agency and the draft.

Hardman was always going to be valued for his elite speed and acceleration, so it’s no surprise to hear that he’ll have a “sneaky-good market.” However, hearing that Thornhill could be viewed as the No. 2 safety in this free agent class is telling. The Chiefs are going to have a tough time keeping all these ancillary free agents, especially when they’re honed in on figuring out what to do with players like Orlando Brown Jr. and JuJu Smith-Schuster, who are also slated to become free agents at the start of the new league year.

3 free agent safeties to replace John Johnson III in Cleveland

Here are some free agent options to replace John Johnson III in 2023.

News broke that the Cleveland Browns intend to move on from John Johnson III by the start of the new league year on March 15th. General manager Andrew Berry would later confirm the reports during his press conference at the scouting combine. Things just didn’t work out for Johnson in Cleveland after they asked him to do things that weren’t his strengths in Los Angeles.

With Johnson moving on the need for a new safety and a true free safety is evident for the Browns. There are players in free agency that can fill the need let’s look at three free agents that would be upgrades for what the Browns need in 2023 at the position.
