Falcons sign veteran defensive back Josh Thompson

Falcons expected to sign veteran defensive back Josh Thompson, per report

According to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Atlanta Falcons are expected to sign veteran defensive back Josh Thompson to their 90-man roster. The 25-year-old has mostly been used as a special-teams gunner, appearing in six career games for the Tennessee Titans in 2022.

Thompson spent most of the 2023 season on the Titans practice squad before signing with the Houston Texans back in January. The Texans released him back in April and now he joins an Atlanta team that’s thin at the defensive back position.

Safety DeMarcco Hellams is out for the foreseeable future and the team just placed Harrison Hand on the injured reserve list on Sunday.

The Falcons are also working out veteran safety Justin Simmons, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Simmons, 30, made the Pro Bowl last season in Denver but was released by the team over the offseason.

Many consider Simmons to be the best free agent on the market. If Atlanta signs him, the former Broncos safety would join a secondary that already features Jessie Bates III and A.J. Terrell.

Check back later to see if the team makes an official transaction and stay up to date with each move with our updated 90-man roster tracker.

Titans held tryouts with 7 players on Thursday

The Titans brought seven players in for tryouts on Thursday, including three familiar faces.

The Tennessee Titans are on their bye week and are taking the extra time this week to get a look at some players, according to the league’s transactions wire.

Among the players to try out for the Titans on Thursday were three familiar faces in running back Jonathan Ward, linebacker Joseph Jones and defensive back Josh Thompson.

Ward and Thompson were both with the Titans during the offseason, also, but suffered injuries that thwarted their bids at the team’s initial 53-man roster.

This is Ward’s second meeting with the Titans this month. Tennessee only has two running backs on the active roster, so there’s a need for depth there. Thompson and Ward can offer help on special teams, also.

Jones appeared in 24 games with the Titans from 2021 through 2022, playing mostly on special teams. He saw just 64 snaps on defense in that span.

Now, a look at the rest of the players the Titans worked out, along with some information for each.

Titans activate Dillon Radunz off PUP list among 4 moves

The Titans made four roster moves on Monday, one of which included activating OL Dillon Radunz off the PUP list.

The Tennessee Titans are getting back 2021 second-round pick and offensive lineman Dillon Radunz right before cutdown day on Tuesday.

The team announced on Monday that Radunz has been cleared to practice and is no longer on the physically unable to perform list.

Radunz, who suffered a torn ACL in December last season, was projected to start the season on the PUP list, which would have knocked him out for the first four games.

However, clearly that is not the case and instead Radunz will be ready for the start of the season after recovering in just eight months.

This figures to shake things up a bit for the offensive line room.

It’s doubtful Radunz, who can play both guard and tackle, will grab a starting spot this late in the process, but he should be able to secure a depth role. And, if all goes well with his return and someone upfront struggles mightily, perhaps Radunz can work his way up the depth chart.

Along with activating Radunz, the Titans announced three more moves on Monday. Here’s a look at them:

Titans sign Kyle Peko, place Shakel Brown on IR among 3 moves

The Titans have signed DL Kyle Peko and activated DB Josh Thompson off NFI.

The Tennessee Titans made three roster moves on Monday, including the signing of veteran defensive lineman, Kyle Peko.

Peko was in practice with Tennessee on Monday and will be taking the roster spot of 2023 UDFA and defensive lineman, Shakel Brown, who head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed had suffered a season-ending injury. Brown exited preseason Week 1 early with an ankle issue.

In addition to those moves, defensive back Josh Thompson has been activated off the non-football injury list and returned to practice.

Peko is a familiar name for the Titans after playing in eight games (three starts) for Tennessee in 2021. The veteran was effective in his role, tallying 10 tackles (two for loss), two sacks, and one forced fumble.

On top of bringing in Peko, the Titans also worked out defensive lineman Marvin Wilson, according to Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com.

Titans place Caleb Farley, Dillon Radunz on PUP to start training camp

The Titans announced some roster moves ahead of training camp, including Caleb Farley, Dillon Radunz landing on the PUP list.

With training camp starting next week, the Tennessee Titans have officially started to make several different transactions, ranging from the massive free-agent signing of DeAndre Hopkins, to injury designations.

When discussing the latter, it appears that Tennessee will open up training camp without the services of its top two draft picks from the 2021 class.

Both cornerback Caleb Farley and offensive lineman Dillon Radunz will begin camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Both players can take part in meetings and other off-the-field activities, but neither can participate in practice. However, they can be activated off the list at any time, although it remains to be seen when that will happen.

Farley is still recovering from back surgery, while Radunz is recovering from a torn ACL that he suffered late last season. It was expected Radunz would begin camp on the PUP list after tearing his ACL in December, but Farley wasn’t as certain.

Both players have been very disappointing over their first two years in the NFL, as neither has been able to latch on to a starting spot.

The Titans also placed defensive back Josh Thompson on the non-football illness list. We won’t speculate as to why, but let’s hope that everything is okay on that front.

One notable player not placed on the PUP list is Harold Landry, who is coming back from a torn ACL. It would appear Landry will be ready to go once training camp begins, which is great news for Tennessee’s defense.

Titans place CB Elijah Molden on IR among four roster moves

The Titans have placed CB Elijah Molden on IR for the second time this season.

The Tennessee Titans announced a total of four roster moves on Wednesday, one of which included the placement of cornerback Elijah Molden on injured reserve.

Molden, who has been nagged by a groin injury since before the start of the season, has appeared in just two games this year after playing in 16 of 17 contests in 2021.

Normally, a second stint on injured reserve would end a player’s season, but a new rule for 2022 allows Molden to return again. However, he won’t be eligible until Week 18.

In a corresponding move, the Titans signed cornerback John Reid off the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad, a move that was reported on Tuesday.

Reid was a former fourth-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2020 and has played in 24 games (three starts) over two seasons with the Texans and Seattle Seahawks, tallying 25 tackles and three passes defensed.

Now, a look at all four of the moves the Titans made on Wednesday.

Jaguars sign former Cardinals S Deionte Thompson to practice squad

The Jaguars filled the empty spot on their practice squad with a veteran safety.

A day after the Tennessee Titans scooped up rookie safety Josh Thompson from the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad, the Jaguars replaced him on the roster with former Arizona Cardinals safety Deionte Thompson.

Deionte Thompson, 25, was the Cardinals’ fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and started six games in his first two seasons while contributing most on special teams. After making Arizona’s 53-man roster again this season, Thompson was waived by the team near the end of September.

In three games this season, Thompson played only six defensive snaps and 49 on special teams.

Thompson has recorded 54 career tackles with two quarterback hits and three passes defended. Following the addition of Thompson, the Jaguars practice squad is as follows:

  • WR Kevin Austin Jr.
  • OLB Rashod Berry
  • OT Coy Cronk
  • CB Gregory Junior
  • DL Jeremiah Ledbetter
  • K James McCourt
  • WR Jaylon Moore
  • OL Jimmy Murray
  • S Ayo Oyelola
  • QB E.J. Perry
  • TE Gerrit Prince
  • RB Mekhi Sargent
  • LB Ty Summers
  • DT Nick Thurman
  • S Deionte Thompson
  • OL Darryl Williams
  • WR Seth Williams

Titans place OLB Ola Adeniyi on IR, reportedly add S Josh Thompson

With Ola Adeniyi going on IR, the Titans now have 12 players on the list.

The Tennessee Titans added yet another to their long list of players currently on the injured reserve list.

The team announced on Monday that is has placed outside linebacker Ola Adeniyi in IR, meaning he’ll miss at least the next four games. Adeniyi, who hasn’t played since Week 2, has been dealing with a neck injury.

With Adeniyi added, the Titans’ IR list is now 12 players deep.

While the team didn’t announce the move today, the Titans are signing safety Josh Thompson off the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Thompson has yet to appear in a game.

It has been a busy day for the Titans, who not only swapped out Josh Gordon for C.J. Board on the practice squad, but also announced the details of their agreement on a new stadium with the city of Nashville.

Coming off a bye, Tennessee will host the Indianapolis Colts in Week 7.

Titans sign S Josh Thompson off Jaguars practice squad

The Titans signed a player off the Jaguars’ practice squad for the second time in less than a month.

The Tennessee Titans went digging through the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad for the second time in a month. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Titans are signing Josh Thompson to their 53-man roster from the Jaguars practice squad.

Three weeks ago, the Titans added defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. to their roster off the Jaguars practice squad. In his first two games with Tennessee, Edwards made two tackles and recorded one quarterback hit.

Thompson, 23, joined the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent earlier this year after playing safety at Texas. He survived the Jaguars’ initial cut down to 53 players, but was later waived before the start of the regular season and was added to the practice squad.

In preseason, Thompson recorded two tackles and one defended pass.

While the Jaguars have already played the Indianapolis Colts twice and the Houston Texans once, matchups against the Titans are still far off on the horizon. The divisional rivals will meet for the first time in Tennessee on Dec. 11 and then in Jacksonville on Jan. 8.

WATCH: Jaguars’ special teams unit comes up with incredible save to pin Steelers inside the 5 yard line

The #Jaguars special teams unit is starting to look really special in their third preseason game against the #Steelers

Rookie Josh Thompson made one of the more impressive plays of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ third preseason game with an expertly batted ball on a punt that was about to bounce into the end zone. The play came about midway through the third quarter and set the Pittsburgh Steelers back to the two yard line to start their second drive of the half.

Check out this slick play that showed off the undrafted rookie’s excellent body control and awareness as a gunner in punt coverage:

This heady play, paired with the Jaguars’ talented defense, put the team in a position to force Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Rudolph to take an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone, resulting in a safety. The safety put Jacksonville back on top in scoring, but only by a single point, so their work is far from over.

Thompson is likely still on the outside looking in for a spot on the final 53-man roster, though this play will certainly give the coaching staff something to think about as they cut down their roster. Special teams versatility is a major plus for any fringe roster candidate, and if they think he’ll help them win games as a gunner, they may decide to keep him around.

For now, though, this play will serve as a key highlight in Thompson’s portfolio of game-changing plays and could serve him well in the future as he looks to carve out a career in the NFL.
