The UFC stays in Las Vegas this week with a key bantamweight matchup atop the card.

UFC Fight Night 223 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The main card streams on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN2 and ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Ricky Simon[/autotag] (20-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) takes on [autotag]Song Yadong[/autotag] (19-7-1 MMA, 8-2-1 UFC) in a 125-pound matchup originally set for a co-main event this past Saturday. Simon is a slight -120 favorite at the betting window. The comeback on Yadong is +100, making these some of the stickiest main event odds in the UFC this year. Our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have Simon with a big eight ahead of Yadong, who has just three head nods.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Caio Borralho[/autotag] (13-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) is the biggest favorite on the card at nearly 4-1 in his middleweight bout against [autotag]Michal Oleksiejczuk[/autotag] (18-5 MMA, 6-3 UFC). He’s also one of our three unanimous picks.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Cody Brundage[/autotag] (8-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) takes on [autotag]Rodolfo Vieira[/autotag] (8-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) in a middleweight bout. Vieira is about a -250 favorite and is a near-unanimous pick at 10-1.

[autotag]Julian Erosa[/autotag] (28-10 MMA, 6-6 UFC) is a slight favorite with the oddsmakers in his featherweight bout against [autotag]Fernando Padilla[/autotag] (14-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC). But it’s Padilla who has a 7-4 picks lead.

Although unbeaten heavyweight [autotag]Waldo Cortes-Acosta[/autotag] (9-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) is a slight underdog against [autotag]Marcos Rogerio[/autotag] (20-8-1 MMA, 9-6 UFC), he’s the second of our three unanimous picks.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Josh Quinlan[/autotag] (6-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is our third unanimous pick in his welterweight bout against short-notice opponent [autotag]Trey Waters[/autotag] (7-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC). Quinlan nearly is a 2-1 favorite in the fight.

In the MMA Junkie consensus picks, Simon (59 percent), Borralho (79 percent), Vieira (75 percent), Erosa (70 percent), Cortes-Acosta (60 percent) and Quinlan (86 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

With UFC on ESPN 41 in the books, MMA Junkie acquired a list of disclosed payouts from CSAC executive director Andy Foster. Five fighters received six-figure paydays, including headliners [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] and [autotag]Dominick Cruz[/autotag].

Other fighters who received six-figure paydays included [autotag]Gabriel Benitez[/autotag], [autotag]Angela Hill[/autotag], and [autotag]Gerald Meerschaert[/autotag].

UFC on ESPN 41 video: Josh Quinlan melts Jason Witt with one-punch knockout

Josh Quinlan had a memorable octagon debut on Saturday when he viciously knocked out Jason Witt at UFC on ESPN 41.

SAN DIEGO – [autotag]Josh Quinlan[/autotag] had a memorable octagon debut on Saturday when he viciously knocked out [autotag]Jason Witt[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN 41.

Quinlan (6-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) landed a picture-perfect left hook in the opening round of his 180-pound catchweight fight with Witt (19-9 MMA, 2-4 UFC), which took place at Pechanga Arena in San Diego.

Check out the replay of the finish below (via Twitter):

After the fight, Quinlan explained why he didn’t want to land a follow-up shot on his already unconscious opponent.

“I’m not trying to hurt people in here,” Quinlan said in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “I just want to do my best.”

UFC pulled Josh Quinlan bout for steroid metabolite, so why might he fight one week after? Jeff Novitsky explains

Josh Quinlan was suspended nine months after a contract-earning victory for M3 metabolite. Jeff Novitzky calls it “one of the craziest substances that I’ve seen here.”

[autotag]Josh Quinlan[/autotag] has once again tested positive for the banned steroid metabolite that earned him a nine-month suspension.

This time, however, no punishment is expected. Quinlan (5-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) was removed from his UFC on ESPN 40 bout Saturday after the promotion was notified of a positive test Friday.

Like his positive test on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2021 that earned him a suspension and fine from the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC), Quinlan once again tested positive for steroid metabolite M3.

As the UFC on ESPN 40 prelims played out, UFC Senior Vice President of Athlete Health and Performance Jeff Novitzky spoke with reporters about the oddity, which is becoming less unusual as time goes on.

Novitzky revealed Quinlan tested negative 14 times in between his suspension and positive test during fight week. The sample turned in showed levels of less than 100 picograms. A USADA investigation resulted and there were no adverse findings.

However, the NAC has different rules and the matter needs to be discussed before the commission before a fighter is allowed to compete again in the jurisdiction.

While there have been reports of the bout now happening at UFC on ESPN 41 in San Diego on Aug. 13, Novitzky said California State Athletic Commission head Andy Foster is still doing an independent investigation and determination of his own.

“Once you are exposed to it, intentionally or not, it’s going to be with you for a long period of time,” Novitzky told MMA Junkie and other reporters. If anything that comes out of this, it’s a good lesson not only for our UFC fighters but for aspiring fighters.

“I was talking to Jason House last night, Josh’s manager, saying, ‘You need to tell your guys and girls that want to get into the UFC (to) start acting like you’re in the UFC right now. Because what you do now, even if you’re not in the UFC yet, you can end up paying for later down the line when you do get it.’ It’s one of the craziest substances that I’ve seen here.”

Novitzky explained how M3 has seemingly reappeared in athletes during weight cuts. Quinlan is hardly the first to encounter this issue. USADA has stopped punishing fighters for M3 pulsing issues. Most famously, Jon Jones tested positive in a similar fashion ahead of UFC 232 which resulted in a shift of his rematch against Alexander Gustafsson from Las Vegas to Inglewood, Calif. in December 2018.
