Rodolfo Vieira expected UFC Fight Night 236 win over Armen Petrosyan: ‘I knew if I put him down, I would finish him’

LAS VEGAS – Decorated grappling world champion [autotag]Rodolfo Vieira[/autotag] had a feeling he was going to win by submission in his return to the octagon.

Vieira (10-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) got his hand raised Saturday on the main card of UFC Fight Night 236 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas after he submitted Armen Petrosyan (8-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) with an arm-triangle choke in the first round of their middleweight contest – something he saw coming.

“I’m feeling great with this victory, with one more finish,” Vieira told reporters at the UFC Fight Night 236 post-fight press conference. “I knew that he was a high-level striker, but he had a lot of (holes) in his ground game. I knew if I put him down, I would finish him.”

Not much surprised Vieira when it came down to face Petrosyan. However, the calf kicks Petrosyan threw did throw a small wrench into the fight.

“I wasn’t expecting the calf kicks,” Vieira said. “He hurt me. I think he hit me like three or four times. At the time, when I was fighting, I didn’t feel anything, but now I’m hurting. But it doesn’t matter. After the kicks, I took him down, and I finished him, and that’s what matters to me.”

Under the UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance program’s payout tiers, which appropriate the money generated by Venum’s multi-year sponsorship with the UFC, fighters are paid based on their total number of UFC bouts, as well as Zuffa-era WEC fights (January 2007 and later) and Zuffa-era Strikeforce bouts (April 2361 and later). Fighters with 1-3 bouts receive $4,000 per appearance; 4-5 bouts get $4,500; 6-10 bouts get $6,000; 11-15 bouts earn $11,000; 16-20 bouts pocket $16,000; and 21 bouts and more get $21,000. Additionally, champions earn $42,000 while title challengers get $32,000.

In addition to experience-based pay, UFC fighters will receive in perpetuity royalty payments amounting to 20-30 percent of any UFC merchandise sold that bears their likeness, according to officials.

Minutes before walkout, UFC Sao Paulo loses third bout in less than 36 hours

Minutes before the walkouts, UFC Sao Paulo lost a fight – the third one canceled in 36 hours.

The UFC Fight Night 231 main card is even shorter than anticipated due to a last-minute cancellation.

Following the conclusion of the prelims Saturday at Ginasio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo, UFC commentator Brendan Fitzgerald broke news on the broadcast the fight between [autotag]Armen Petrosyan[/autotag] and [autotag]Rodolfo Vieira[/autotag] had been canceled. The main card, headlined by Jailton Almeida vs. Derrick Lewis, continues with five fights.

The reason is an illness with Petrosyan (8-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC), revealed Fitzgerald. The cancellation marks the card’s third since the start of official weigh-ins Friday morning local time.

Neither Vieira (9-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) or Petrosyan have commented publicly on the matter at the time of publication, but Petrosyan’s manager said his client became ill at the arena.
