Ohio State football issues availability report for Youngstown State Penguins

Ohio State football issues availability report for Youngstown State Penguins #GoBucks

The fine folks with the [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] team have issued the availability report for the game against the Youngstown State Penguins and as expected some new names have popped up after the first game against the Indiana Hoosiers. The report is still fairly positive as no one surprising is listed as out, but a starter is listed as questionable in [autotag]Josh Proctor[/autotag].

With the Buckeyes taking on an FCS opponent, there is a high likely hood that we won’t see Proctor play in this game, but it appears they have every intention of running him through pre-game warm-ups. We touched on Malik Hartford possibly seeing an increase in opportunities and the Proctor injury makes Hartford’s appearance on the field a guarantee. Incoming Syracuse transfer, [autotag]Ja’Had Carter[/autotag] will also likely see an increase in snaps. The report is as follows:

QUESTIONABLE

  • SAF Josh Proctor
OUT
  • WR Kyion Grayes
  • TE Zak Herbstreit
  • DL Will Smith Jr.
  • WR Reis Stocksdale
  • SAF Kourt Williams II

Ohio State football: Who earned Buckeye leaves for their play against Indiana

Who do you think earned Buckeyes Leaves for Ohio State against Indiana #GoBucks

The [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] team started it’s season with a sluggish win over Indiana, 23-3.

Yes, a win is a win, but in this era of college football, if you aren’t winning big, you aren’t making enough headlines. This lackluster win most likely will make the news, but that’s due to being the first game in almost nine months.

We were expecting and offense to put up a lot of points and a defense to not allow many, and only one of those two showed up. Find out which Ohio State players earned Buckeye Leaves in my eyes after today’s season opening victory against the Hoosiers.

Ohio State football starts Josh Proctor at free safety against Indiana

The Buckeyes have made their choice at safety #GoBucks

Coming into Week 1 most of the starters for [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] were set, but the starting free safety spot was still up for grabs.

True freshman [autotag]Malik Hartford[/autotag], Syracuse transfer [autotag]Ja’Had Carter[/autotag] and sixth year veteran [autotag]Josh Proctor[/autotag] were options to start. All three were expected to play against Indiana.

Well, that question has been answered. Proctor was on the field for the Buckeyes’ first defensive series of the game.

The senior has a great deal of experience for the Buckeyes. He was a starter on the 2020 team that went to the national title game and entered 2021 as a starter but his season ended with a leg injury in Week 2.

Last season he started four of first five games of the season before seeing his role get diminished with [autotag]Ronnie Hickman[/autotag], [autotag]Lathan Ransom[/autotag] and [autotag]Tanner McCalister[/autotag] getting the majority of the snaps at safety.

Proctor is playing well. He has a tackle for loss on each of Indiana’s first two drives, but I expect Hartford and Carter to also get snaps. The free safety starting job could remain a question mark throughout the beginning stage of the season.

Breaking down Chiefs’ pick in Draft Wire’s way-too-early 2024 mock draft

Who did the #Chiefs get in @TheDraftWire’s way-too-early 2024 mock draft? We break it down here:

It hasn’t even been a full 24 hours since the conclusion of the 2023 NFL draft and our friend Curt Popejoy over at Draft Wire already has turned the chapter to 2024.

In his way-too-early first-round 2024 mock draft, Popejoy sends the Chiefs Ohio State S Josh Proctor. He returned to Ohio State as a fifth-year senior in 2023 due to the NCAA’s COVID-eligibility rules. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, he has the ideal size to play the position in the NFL.

In 2022, he appeared in 11 games with the Buckeyes, recording 21 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and two passes defended. He’ll have to take a big leap in his production in 2023 in order to be considered a first-round pick. He certainly has the measurables and he has some moments on tape like this:

I’d be surprised if the Chiefs ended up going with a safety in the first round in the 2024 NFL draft. It’d almost certainly mean that they opted to use the out year in Justin Reid’s three-year contract or that a player like Bryan Cook has failed to take a second-year leap. Mike Edwards is slated to be a free agent in 2024, but the Chiefs also traded up in Round 4 of the 2023 NFL draft to select a versatile DB in Chamarri Conner.

Former starter at safety makes surprising decision to return to Ohio State for sixth year

This was a bit of a surprise, no? #GoBucks

We’ll forgive you if this went a little under the radar because it was something we didn’t really think was going to happen either. In case you missed the news, safety Josh Proctor decided to return to Ohio State for a sixth season. Proctor can still pull the trigger on an extra year provided to student-athletes because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and he has decided to do just that.

The news comes by way of a report on Friday by the Columbus Dispatch (subscription may be required) and should be welcome news for a defense that is safety driven under defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.

Proctor’s career arc has been an interesting and unusual one. He’s dealt with injuries but looked to finally be an integral part of the defense last season. He opened 2022 as the starter at free safety only to be replaced by Lathan Ransom after a poor showing against Notre Dame.

That seemed to shake the confidence the coaching staff had in Proctor and he played sparingly, never really getting an opportunity to get back in the mix. Still, there’s no denying the intriguing potential of such an athletic and rangy player (6 feet, 2 inch, 205 pounds).

Proctor should be in the running with Ransom, Kye Stokes, Sonny Styles, Kourt Williams and Cam Martinez to start or at least be a big part of a rotation on the back end.

The day after: Thoughts on Ohio State’s crushing loss to Georgia

So many thoughts but these stuck out in my mind the most. How about yours Buckeye fans? #GoBucks

If you were like me, it was hard to sleep Saturday night.

For more than three quarters of the [autotag]Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl[/autotag], it looked like [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] would face [autotag]TCU[/autotag] with a national championship on the line. Georgia had different plans. It mounted a massive comeback during the fourth quarter and sent the Buckeyes back to Columbus with a disappointing loss.

Since the game ended, many thoughts have passed through my head, some good, some bad and a great many pondering what the future for [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] and his program will look like. Here are my thoughts the day after Ohio State’s 42-41 loss to Georgia in the College Football Playoff semifinal. (Also, happy New Year’s everyone, even if it wasn’t what many of us wanted).

Ohio State safety Josh Proctor lost for the season

Here’s to wishing Proctor a healthy and speedy recovery! #GoBucks

What looked bad on the field Saturday against Oregon was just that. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day confirmed Monday that safety Josh Proctor will be out for the season while appearing on his Buckeye Roundtable show on 97.1 The Fan Monday.

“I don’t know the exact term of what it was, but there was a fracture there,” Day said. “Very, very tough injury for him, and prayers are out for him for his family. He did have a surgery, and he’s resting safely now and everything so that all went well. But a very, very big loss for our team, and obviously a big loss for him.”

A big loss indeed. Proctor was lost in the third quarter as Ohio State was embattled in a tough game against Oregon. He got involved in a tackle with several other players and got his leg tangled in the mass of humanity and was carted off the field. The Buckeyes eventually lost the game 35-28.

The Buckeye secondary is an inexperienced unit that has already dealt with some injuries in the young season. Already this year, cornerbacks Cameron Brown and Sevyn Banks have been banged up. That, coupled with a change in scheme, attack, and youth has contributed to a defense that has not performed up to expectations.

Redshirt sophomore Bryson Shaw got the bulk of the snaps in Proctor’s absence on Saturday and is the most likely candidate to take on the role going forward.

Oregon will be facing a very athletic, but inexperienced Ohio State defense

Ohio State’s defense is athletic, but very inexperienced, which is something the Ducks will need to exploit on Saturday in their upset bid.

While the Ohio State offense is dynamic and will present the opposition problems all over the field, its defense is a bit of a different story.

The Buckeyes defensive personnel might be the best the Ducks will face from an athletic standpoint, but the scheme itself won’t be anything quarterback Anthony Brown hasn’t faced before.

It’ll be a basic 4-3 defense with one hybrid position the Buckeyes call “Bullet.” It’s a linebacker that has the size and toughness to play the regular linebacker position and has the speed and agility to help out in the secondary.

Sophomore Ronnie Hickman played that Bullet spot and led the Buckeyes with 11 tackles in the 45-32 win over Minnesota.

Like Hickman, Ohio State’s linebackers and secondary are all fairly new as starters and if Oregon wants to have a chance at the upset, this is where the Buckeyes might be vulnerable.

Ohio State did play against Minnesota in Week 1 without starting corners Cameron Brown and Sevyn Banks, and their status is still unknown for the Oregon game. If Ohio State has to play with two inexperienced corners, the Ducks have the players to exploit that and score points.

In their absence, Ohio State had to rely on second and third-string cornerbacks, Denzel Burke and Ryan Watts, against Minnesota and the Gophers were able to make a lot of plays downfield.

Starting safety Josh Proctor came out of the Minnesota game with an apparent shoulder injury and his status is also a question mark. Buckeyes’ coach Ryan Day doesn’t give out injury reports or even a depth chart, so it’s anyone’s guess as to who will go out on the field for the Buckeyes defense. But according to defensive coordinator, Kerry Coombs, his guys will be a physical group.

“I think it starts with a certain physicality. You have to be physical here because practice is very physical,” Coombs said. “I think these kids have come through some incredible situations over the last two years that I would say speaks volumes to their mental toughness.”

In order for the Ducks to challenge that mental toughness, they’re going to have to play ahead on the scoreboard and put the worry of an upset in Ohio State’s mind for as long as possible. It almost worked against the Ducks against Fresno State as the Bulldogs hung in there the entire game.

The lack of experienced personnel on the Ohio State defense could put them in the exact same position.

Ohio State names its Players of the Game for the win against Indiana

It might not have been the performance we were all expecting or hoping for, but Ohio State did come out on top Saturday against a top ten Indiana squad lest the national media and fans forget.

And true to form, the Buckeyes announced their Players of the Game for the close shave in the ‘Shoe against the Hoosiers.

On the defensive side of the ball, defensive end Jonathon Cooper and linebacker Pete Werner were named Co-Defensive Players of the Game. Cooper had one sack, two tackles for loss, and multiple hurries. He was in the backfield all game long. Werner also had a sack but also recorded four tackles and a vicious hit that helped create a fumble with Indiana driving deep into OSU territory. More than anything, he was all over the field.

Wide receiver Garrett Wilson and tight end Luke Farrell received the honor as Co-Offensive Players of the Game.

Wilson had several big plays resulting in seven catches for 169 yards and two touchdowns. But as an unsung hero, Farrell was a blocking machine Saturday and is being recognized for his work to spring some big runs and change the line of scrimmage on his side.

[lawrence-related id=40773,40763]

And not to be forgotten, safety Josh Proctor received the Special Teams Player of the Game. He had one of the biggest hits you’ll ever see on a kick return when he sent the Hoosier return man back into last week.

Congrats to these five players. As a reminder, Ohio State is back in action this Saturday as it hits the road for a game against Illinois where it’s a huge favorite.
