UFC on ESPN 53 video: Edmen Shahbazyan KOs AJ Dobson to cap huge comeback

Edmen Shahbazyan returned to form with a brutal knockout of AJ Dobson in the featured bout at UFC on ESPN 53.

[autotag]Edmen Shahbazyan[/autotag] turned the tables on [autotag]AJ Dobson[/autotag] in a big way at UFC on ESPN 53, and it resulted in a knockout win.

After Dobson (7-3 MMA, 1-3 UFC) found a home for his punches in the opening minutes of the middleweight bout at the UFC Apex, Shahbazyan (13-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) turned the tide courtesy of a clean punch that put his opponent on skates. He followed up with some violent ground-and-pound to put his opponent out cold at the 4:33 mark of Round 1.

Check out the replay of the finishing sequence below (via X):

Shahbazyan started his career on an undefeated run, but had run into a 1-4 skid over his past five contests. He got back on track with a highlight-reel finish, and hopes to carry momentum moving forward.

“He hit me with a good shot, I’m not going to lie,” Shahbazyan said in his post-fight interview with Paul Felder. “It buzzed me for a second. I kept telling myself I would battle through adversity. … I tried to show my full skillset today.

Why AJ Dobson is stoked for Edmen Shahbazyan at UFC on ESPN 53

AJ Dobson has a very modern-era reason to be excited for his opponent at UFC on ESPN 53.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]AJ Dobson[/autotag] has a very modern-era reason to be excited for his opponent at UFC on ESPN 53.

Dobson (7-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) takes on Edmen Shahbazyan (12-4 MMA, 5-4 UFC) in a middleweight bout Saturday at UFC on ESPN 53 (ESPN/ESPN+) at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. And while it’s true Shahbazyan has about twice as much experience as the most experienced opponent Dobson’s fought heretofore, that’s not the key factor in why he’s stoked to share the cage with him.

“I was pretty excited. He’s a guy that’s headlined before. He’s in the video game,” Dobson said of first word of his opponent at Wednesday’s UFC on ESPN 53 media day. The video game in reference is “EA Sports UFC 5,” which came out this past fall for PlayStation 5 and XBox. Shahbazyan is one of dozens of current and former UFC middleweight fighters available as fighters in the game.

But beyond that, Dobson sees an opportunity to beat a fighter who trains with former middleweight champion Sean Strickland at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, which will make a win over him all the more valuable on his resume.

“He has a really good team behind him,” Dobson said. “It’s a really good opportunity for me to show that my skills are up to par and I belong. I think this is going to be the best Edmen ever. People can look at his record and say whatever they want, but he’s still a part of a really good team. He’s been putting in work. He’s gotten to see that champion level camp with Sean. So I think I’m going to get the best Edmen and I’m prepared for that.”

‘Gutted’ Tresean Gore out of UFC 298 due to shoulder injury

The UFC’s February pay-per-view in Anaheim is down a man as Tresean Gore is out vs. AJ Dobson.

UFC 298 has an unexpected opening.

“TUF 29” middleweight runner up [autotag]Tresean Gore[/autotag] is out due to a shoulder injury, he revealed in a series of Instagram stories Wednesday.

One of the stories featured Dr. John Tokish, of the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, who explained Gore’s injuries, which include a labral tear, paralabral cyst, and likely Grade 2 AC joint separation.

“I don’t think he’s going to be ready in 12 days to be able to protect himself,” Tokish said.

Gore (4-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) was expected to fight [autotag]AJ Dobson[/autotag] (7-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) on the Feb. 17 preliminary card at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

“Gutted posting this, but the UFC didn’t clear me to fight. I initially was gonna fight anyway, but my Coach made me (get) a MRI because he didn’t want me fighting with one Arm!” Gore wrote. “Man I don’t understand why some things happen, but it’s all on God’s time not mine! I will be back and when the time is Right, I will be P4P. I can’t allow injury’s to kill my dream!”

It’s unclear if Dobson will remain on the card, although he teased fight news Wednesday on Instagram.

With the change, the UFC 298 fight card includes:
