Cardinals sign DL Josh Mauro to practice squad, lose CB Greg Mabin to Titans

Mauro returns to offset the loss of two D-linemen to the COVID list and Mabin is signing with the Titans.

The Arizona Cardinals announced one roster move on the practice squad because another unannounced one happened. With defensive linemen Corey Peters and Zach Allen both currently on the COVID reserve, the Cardinals added defensive lineman Josh Mauro to the practice squad.

This is Mauro’s third stint with the team.

He played for the Cardinals from 2014-2017 and then again three games last season. He returns to give them depth for practice and potentially be an elevation for games if needed.

Mauro has played in 75 games, starting 39 of them, and has 127 total tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and five pass breakups.

The addition offsets the loss of cornerback Gren Mabin from the practice squad. On Tuesday’s NFL transaction report, it showed that Mabin terminated his contract with the team.

ESPN Field Yates reported he is going to sign with the Tennessee Titans to their active roster, as rookie cornerback Caleb Farley tore his ACL and is lost for the season.

Cardinals waive DL Josh Mauro from IR

He played in three games and have five tackles and a sack for the Cardinals in 2020.

The Arizona Cardinals had a transaction appear on the league daily wire. They have cut ties with defensive lineman Josh Mauro.

Mauro was signed on October 28 off the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad when things were dire with injuries on the defensive line. He played in three games, starting two, had a sack and five total tackles.

He himself suffered a hamstring injury in the Cardinals’ 28-21 loss to the Seattle Seahawks and was placed on injured reserve. He was designated for return so he could practice but never activated from injured reserve.

Now, assuming he is not claimed off waivers, he will be free to sign with another team if he wishes to.

TE Darrell Daniels, DL Josh Mauro designated to return from IR by Cardinals

The Cardinals could get another pair of players back from injured reserve this week.

The Arizona Cardinals could get back another pair of players from injured reserve this week. The team announced Wednesday that it designated tight end Darrell Daniels and defensive lineman Josh Mauro for return from IR.

The move allows them to practice again with the team and opens a three-week window in which they can be activated to the 53-man roster.

Both players were placed on injured reserve on November 28. Daniels suffered an ankle injury against the Buffalo Bills. Mauro injured his hamstring against the Seattle Seahawks.

In nine games this season, Daniels has six receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown. He has started six times.

In three games with the Cardinals before landing on IR, Mauro had five tackles and a sack.

Giants will square off with several former friends in Week 14

The New York Giants will come face-to-face with several former friends in Week 14 against the Arizona Cardinals.

The New York Giants (5-7) will take on the Arizona Cardinals (6-6) at MetLife Stadium in Week 14 and that means they will come face-to-face with several former friends who are now the enemy.

In fact, the Giants will square off against an edge rushing talent they had relied heavily upon a year ago and who called East Rutherford home just a few short weeks ago.

Here’s a quick look at the familiar faces New York will see this Sunday.

Cardinals activate DL Zach Allen, make number of Week 12 roster moves

They activated one from IR, placed two on IR and brought up five players from the practice squad to play in Week 12.

The Arizona Cardinals made a number of roster moves on Saturday to get ready for their Week 12 game against the New England Patriots. They reactivated one player off injured reserve, placed two players on it and moved five from the practice squad to the active roster using three different methods.

Cardinals bring back DL Josh Mauro, signing him off Jaguars practice squad

Mauro is the second defender the Cardinals have added who are on their second stint with the team.

The Arizona Cardinals have brought back a familiar face to replace Zach Allen on the 53-man roster. The team announced Wednesday it signed defensive lineman Josh Mauro from the practice squad of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Mauro, of course, played for the Cardinals from 2014-2017.

Allen, who suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter of Sunday night’s game, was placed on injured reserve, giving the Cardinals only four defensive linemen on the active roster.

Mauro, now 29 years old, had not played yet this season. He was suspended five games for violation to the league’s policy on PEDs and also was on the COVID-19 reserve, too. Mauro also was suspended four games in 2018 under the league’s PED policy.

In Mauro’s career, he has appeared in 72 games, starting 37. He has 122 career total tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

He is a high-effort player who is good for 25-35% of a team’s defensive snaps. When he was with the Cardinals, he flashed more on the field than he showed up in the stats. He was solid against the run in his time with the Cardinals.

He is the second defender in the last week the Cardinals have acquired who had a previous stint in Arizona. They acquired linebacker Markus Golden, who played with the Cardinals from 2015-2018, from the New York Giants in a trade last week.

Jags activate PK Josh Lambo alongside other roster transactions

Jags kicker Josh Lambo is officially back from injured reserve.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ injury report was one with many names on it, but one player who seemingly has been cleared to return is placekicker Josh Lambo. After being designated to return from injured reserve (with a left hip injury) earlier in the week, the team officially activated him Thursday.

Lambo’s return is a huge one for the Jags as their kicking game has struggled since his absence which dates back to after Week 2’s game against the Tennessee Titans. The Jags went through four kickers while Lambo recovered due to injuries or struggles on the field in Brandon Wright, Aldrick Rosas, Stephen Hauschka, and Jon Brown.

Of course, with Brown being the Jags’ active kicker Week 6, he was released upon Lambo’s return. Defensive end Josh Mauro was released, too, after spending time on the commissioner’s exempt list. The veteran was placed on the list after serving a five-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs and also had to be placed on the Jags’ Reserve/ COVID-19 list this past weekend.

Mauro’s release made room for the Jags to promote undrafted rookie tight end, Ben Ellefson, from their practice squad to their main roster. Ellefson’s promotion is likely a result of the Jags’ injury situation at tight end as veteran Tyler Eifert didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday with a neck injury.

Ellefson was able to gain some experience earlier this season, participating in the Jags’ Week 1 game against the Indianapolis Colts and Week 2’s game against the Titans. While he didn’t register any catches in those games, Week 2’s game marked a start for him and he was able to register 30 snaps when combining his snaps from both games.

Lastly, the Jags placed veteran defensive tackle Abry Jones on injured reserve with an ankle injury. The decision came after he didn’t participate in practice Thursday with the injury. As a result of Thursday’s transaction, Jones won’t be eligible to return until three more games, which means he’ll have to sit out of their games against the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, and Green Bay Packers.

Jags, NFL have zero positive tests heading into Week 6’s games

The Jags had no positive COVID-19 tests on their active roster Sunday before their Week 6 game against the Lions.

After a player on the practice squad tested positive and several others were placed on their Reserve/COVID-19 list, the Jacksonville Jaguars (and the NFL) had zero positive tests on their active roster prior to Week 6’s schedule of games. With that, the Jags will take on the Detroit Lions as planned today while the NFL’s other 10 games will proceed as scheduled, too.

The Jags moved to remote operations yesterday as a result of the news. They also started the process of contact tracing to identify players who were in contact with the player who tested positive. Once that was done, the team  placed a total of 12 players from their practice squad on Reserve/COVID-19 in addition to veteran defensive end Josh Mauro. Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the reason behind that decision was because their contact tracing system identified a proximity issue.

The Reserve/COVID-19 list was made this season for both players with the coronavirus and those who’ve been in contact with a person or people who are infected. In the Jags’ case, the practice squad players weren’t grouped with those on the active roster, so the issue seems to have been contained.

Jaguars DL Josh Mauro suspended 5 games for PED violation

The Jags defensive line took another blow to their regular season depth Friday, this time due to suspension.

According to an NFL spokesperson, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive lineman Josh Mauro has been suspended for five games without pay for a violation of the NFL’s performance-enhancing substance policy.

Mauro was signed by the Jaguars on Aug. 11 after recently being with the Oakland Raiders. He has been in the league since 2014, previously spending time with the Arizona Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants. Mauro added a veteran presence on the defensive line now currently in the wake of the retirements of Rodney Gunter and Aaron Lynch.

Mauro joined the Jags on a non-guaranteed one-year contract worth $910,000. He will forgo approximately $182,000 of salary for the 2020 season. Mauro will be eligible to practice this preseason and will be eligible to make his return after the Jags’ Week 5 game against the Houston Texans (Oct. 11).

Mauro is the second player on the roster to receive a regular season suspension for PEDs as defensive tackle Carl Davis will have to deal with one, too. His suspension terms will be for four games, making him eligible to return after the Jags’ Week 4 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Jaguars sign former Raiders DL Josh Mauro

The Jags continued to add defensive line depth Tuesday by signing former Oakland Raiders veteran Josh Mauro out of free-agency.

The Jacksonville Jaguars continued to add depth and competition to their defensive line and signed seventh-year veteran Josh Mauro the team announced Tuesday night. To make room for his addition and keep the roster at 80 players, the Jags also waived receiver C.J. Board.

Mauro, 29, will be entering his sixth season in 2020 after joining the NFL as an undrafted free-agent for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2014. He never played a down for them in the regular season after being released by the Steelers in the process of them making their final 53-man roster. He eventually found himself joining the Arizona Cardinals later in his rookie season, spending four seasons there (2014-17), then one with the NewYork Giants (2018), and one with the Raiders (2019).

Mauro will enter this season with 121 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and three sacks in terms of his career numbers. He’s participated in a total of 72 games while starting in 37. At 6-foot-6, 290-pounds, Mauro could play defensive end for the Jags but has the size to occasionally move inside for them, too.

Mauro’s addition comes after the Jags lost several members of their defensive line with Lerentee McCray, and Al Woods opting out due to concerns for the coronavirus, and Brian Price and Dontavius Russell going on injured reserve this weekend. The team also recently put Rodney Gunter on the active/non-football illness list temporarily.

It could prove to be a difficult task for Mauro to make the final roster, but the deadline for teams to name their final 53-man rosters isn’t until Sept. 5, so he has time to impress and give the staff something to think about.
