Cowboys have cornered the market at just under 8% of 2024 salary cap

The Cowboys are top heavy in their cornerback room, opening the door to help in free agency or the draft. | From @ArmyChiefW3

For a long time, the Cowboys were a struggling secondary when it came to getting interceptions. From 2015 through 2020, they never picked off more than 10 passes in a single season, and doing that only twice in the span. Then, in 2021, All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs did that by himself with his his league-leading 11 picks while the team totaled an amazing 26. 17 of those turnovers came from the cornerback room that season. In 2022, Dallas had 16 interceptions as a team while 2023 added another 17 making it three straight seasons in which Dallas ranked in the top 10 in total interceptions.

Wondering if Dallas can do it again under a new scheme is a valid question with Dan Quinn in Washington and Mike Zimmer taking over the defense and changing the playbook. Another question ishow much depth Dallas really has looking beyond their two projected starters. Five players under contract means the Cowboys have a sneaky need at the position and questions linger after the top two guys. Nonetheless, the current corners in Dallas rival another group for the best-managed room on the roster.

The Cowboys have signed former Michigan State cornerback Josh Butler to their training camp roster. Butler played for the Spartans from 2015 – 2019, recording 52 career tackles and 11 passes defended.

Butler starred for the Michigan Panthers of the USFL this past spring. His strong play for the Panthers helped lead him to this opportunity with the Cowboys.

Josh Butler was a four-star cornerback prospect who had a solid five-year tenure in East Lansing playing for Mark Dantonio and Michigan State. Unfortunately, Butler hasn’t caught on in the professional ranks yet, but he may have gotten his break.

Michigan State loves players from Texas. Just in the past few years alone, the Spartans have been active in recruiting players from there.

Michigan State loves players from Texas. Just in the past few years alone, the Spartans have been active in recruiting players from there. Between players like Darius Snow, Hampton Fay, Josh Butler, Tyler Higby and Kameron Allen, all of them have come from Texas. Now, the Spartans will look to add 2022 safety Peyton Williams to that list.

Williams, who is 6-foot-0 and weighs 180-pounds, attends Rockwell-Heath in his hometown of Rockwall, Texas. Williams currently has no stars and is unranked on 247sports.

Williams has only received one other offer and it’s from New Mexico. He was named to second-team all-district this previous season.

Williams has great speed, size and length for a defensive back. If you look at the highlight tape pinned to his Twitter profile, you will see some of the big hits that he delivers and how well he plays the ball. This would be a great addition for the class of 2022.

  • DB Josh Butler
  • DB David Dowell
  • OL Tyler Higby

Best Michigan State football recruit from every state since the year 2000

Michigan State is under a new national approach to recruiting. Take a look at the best recruit from each state since the year 2000.

Recruiting is an integral part of building a college football team and as many fans know, the way a team recruits is usually what makes or breaks them. Many Michigan State fans are used to the Spartans focusing heavily on recruiting the midwest, and Michigan or Ohio in particular. Mel Tucker has a new mindset when it comes to recruiting and it is expected that the Spartans will be going from coast to coast to find members of their recruiting classes going forward.

Michigan State will soon be building pipelines in many new states and Spartan fans will get used to seeing faces from many different areas of the country come to East Lansing.

With Michigan State taking this new approach to recruiting and signing day having recently just passed, it felt fitting that we go back and find the best recruit from every state on record according to the 247Sports composite rankings that go back to the year 2000.

There are 24 states represented on this list.

This list includes JUCO (Junior College) transfers and will include members of the 2021 recruiting class that have signed their letters of intent earlier this month.

Josh Butler’s dogs joined him at Michigan State Senior Night after deaths of his parents

The best dogs.

For Michigan State cornerback Josh Butler, it’s tough to imagine how difficult Senior Night could have been. Butler lost both his parents — his father to a heart attack in 2017 and his mother to breast cancer this year — during his college career.

In an event where players are typically joined on the field with their parents, Butler made sure that he wasn’t alone ahead of Saturday’s game against Maryland.

He walked out of the tunnel with his dogs, Roxy and Remi, and shared a hug with Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio before making his way onto the field with his pups.

This was the scene at Spartan Stadium:

Butler’s mother, Ladrida Bagley, died in April after being diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer. He made an 18-hour drive to be by her side when she died.

Via lansingstatejournal.com:

His parents had split long ago, but now he was the fifth-year cornerback at Michigan State who had lost them both. He was also the man of the family, and it was up to him to organize the funeral, so he chose a pink and white suit for his mom to commemorate the battle she fought. He threw rose petals onto her pink casket and watched it lowered into the ground.

After the game, Butler shared a photo from the night and thanked the Spartan family for the support.
