WATCH: Former Texas pass rusher Joseph Ossai scores first NFL touchdown

Joseph Ossai achieves another NFL career milestone.

Pass rushers don’t often score touchdowns. Joseph Ossai earned a rare score of his own on Sunday. The former Texas Longhorns standout recorded the first touchdown of his NFL career.

Ossai has seen plenty of expectation and hype since joining the Cincinnati Bengals. An injury derailed his rookie season from the breakout many believed could ensue. This season, the former Longhorn is making the most of his opportunities.

Texas hopes it has a comparable talent on its roster in Barryn Sorrell. Unheralded and underrated, Sorrell is cut from the same cloth as Ossai. The Bengals pass rusher is known for relentless effort. Sunday’s fumble recovery only strengthens that reputation.

Ossai is just one of the Longhorns that will play meaningful football after this week. The Bengals will have a rematch with the Ravens on the same field they won on this week. The skilled athlete is representing his University well at the next level.

Bengals DE Joseph Ossai avoids injury list to start training camp

A common breakout pick seems primed to go for the Bengals.

Joseph Ossai might just end up being the biggest addition to the Cincinnati Bengals defense in 2022.

That’s an interesting thing to suggest considering Ossai missed all of last year with an injury as a rookie after he suffered a torn meniscus. But Ossai’s flashes, even besting elite offensive tackles in the preseason, suggest he’d be a great pass-rusher opposite Trey Hendrickson.

Notably, the Bengals just made a handful of roster moves that shifted guys like La’el Collins to injured lists. The lack of Ossai’s name coming up hints he’s well on track to be full go for training camp, as the team didn’t even take the precaution of putting him on a list (doing so before camp starts would mean they can take him off whenever).

This is an especially interesting development because it was revealed back in May that Ossai had another procedure done.

So while fans might fret over La’el Collins suddenly showing up on an injury list, the team did get a major win, at least for now, with Ossai seemingly ready to go for camp.

B.J. Hill ribs Joseph Ossai for talking up his sack of Tom Brady

“He said he got Brady…preseason.”

Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher Joseph Ossai is one of the team’s biggest breakout candidates going into 2022.

That’s a fact at least partially boosted by his noteworthy preseason highlight from his rookie year in which he tallied a sack on Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady.

But while fans might latch on to that highlight — as does Ossai — not everyone is so willing to give him the credit.

Take Bengals defensive tackle B.J. Hill, who jokingly ribbed Ossai at practice recently over his talking up that big sack he tallied on Brady.

The funny clip, plus the highlight itself, courtesy of the team:

Our take? Ossai was running with the ones as a rookie and looking that good already, so he’s more than justified in being happy about it by pretty much any metric.

Joseph Ossai hype is getting hard to ignore

The Bengals and fans have big expectations for Joseph Ossai.

[mm-video type=video id=01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf/01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf-a232440145eb59fc62f9844a355c3e21.jpg]

The Cincinnati Bengals have a lot of great things going for them.

And one doesn’t have to look far to find some Joseph Ossai hype.

Ossai, a third-round pick in 2021, burst onto the scene looking like a star and played with the first-team units during the preseason before going down with a season-ending injury.

Fast forward to now. Ossai had another minor procedure but is expected to be back in time for training camp. And he’s saying all the right things in the meantime.

“You got to go take it,” Ossai said, according to The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr. “That’s what I intend on doing. Nothing is going to be handed to me just because people expect things from you. Just because you had a good game, nothing is going to be handed. I still have to go out there and compete. We have a great room full of guys that can rush the passer. Hopefully, I’ll do enough and my coaches and teammates will trust me to have that position.”

Social media posts involving Ossai tend to go, well, bonkers:

Normally, this sort of hype would seem unwarranted for a rookie who looked good during the preseason. He hasn’t shown it when the games matter, right?

But the fact Ossai was already running with the first team opposite Trey Hendrickson, which kicked Sam Hubbard inside, spoke to the expectations coaches have for him. That he was a notable standout on film, even getting around strong players like Tampa Bay’s Tristan Wirfs, was an exclamation point.

To add to this, the Bengals didn’t go overboard adding a third pass rusher in free agency or the draft despite the obvious need, a low-key affirmation of their hopes for Ossai.

If Ossai can live up to those expectations, a defense that helped get Cincinnati to the Super Bowl could be even better next season.

Zac Taylor talks Tee Higgins, Logan Wilson and Joseph Ossai injuries

The Bengals have a timeline in mind for the big three injuries.

[mm-video type=video id=01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf/01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf-a232440145eb59fc62f9844a355c3e21.jpg]

The Cincinnati Bengals have three major names nursing notable injuries ahead of training camp: Wideout Tee Higgins, linebacker Logan Wilson and defensive end Joseph Ossai.

And Bengals head coach Zac Taylor expects all of them to remain on the same timeline, meaning a full-go nod by the time training camp rolls around in July.

“Yeah, I think that’s the timeline we’re expecting,” Taylor said, according to CLNS’ Media’s Mike Petraglia. “You don’t want to make a prediction on May 24 but I think there’s a possibility that works out for them.”

Higgins needed his labrum repaired, Wilson did the same after playing through the injury and Ossai had his rookie season ended before it could start after a promising preseason.

It should go without saying, but all three being on track from the first day of camp would be ideal. Higgins is a No. 1 wideout, Wilson is the heart of the defense and the team is heavily relying on those stunning preseason flashes from Ossai to show up right away.

Elsewhere on the injury front, big free-agent add Alex Cappa is currently sidelined for at least a few weeks with an injury of his own.

Bengals’ Joseph Ossai had another procedure, on track for camp

An update on the injury status of Bengals pass-rusher Joseph Ossai.

[mm-video type=video id=01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf/01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf-a232440145eb59fc62f9844a355c3e21.jpg]

Cincinnati Bengals pass-rusher Joseph Ossai popped up on the side field with rehab coordinator Nick Cosgray on Tuesday at team workouts, which raised some eyebrows for fans.

Ossai, a third-round pick in 2021, was a breakout player last preseason before a season-ending injury that he would have presumably been all the way back by now.

But Zac Taylor told The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr. that Ossai had another procedure “to help the process,” which will sideline him for a few more weeks. He remains on track for a full-go nod at training camp.

Often cited as a bonus piece the Bengals will get back that only makes the team stronger next season, Ossai’s situation here is both worth noting and watching as the summer progresses.

Bengals injuries: Joseph Ossai and others start year on reserve lists

A quick look at which injured Bengals went where and when they might return.

[mm-video type=video id=01fdqmrqpmfr9p4ney6t playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fdqmrqpmfr9p4ney6t/01fdqmrqpmfr9p4ney6t-8a8adf58d143b3aaa149462d532f8411.jpg]

Cincinnati Bengals breakout rookie Joseph Ossai starts his rookie season on injured reserve, which means he isn’t eligible to return.

Ossai is the headline item as far as Bengals injuries go after the team trimmed the roster to 53. The nature of his injury — a knee issue discovered while checking him for another injury suffered during a preseason game — means he wouldn’t have been able to return after surgery.

Unlike Ossai, rookie defensive end Wyatt Hubert and offensive tackle Hakeem Adeniji were placed on the NFI list, not IR — which means they are eligible to return after a six-week period. The nature of their injuries suggests they won’t, but the team has left the door open just in case.

Also of note is an injury suffered by defensive end Khalid Kareem. Tight end Mitchell Wilcox also has an issue and rookie Cam Sample might too (the Bengals don’t have to be open about injuries until the regular season starts). Just keep in mind that these guys, or other injured players, can now be placed on short-term IR since they made the 53, and they would only have to miss a minimum of three weeks.
