MSU RB Jordon Simmons entered transfer portal during bye week

A Michigan State running back has entered the transfer portal

A Michigan State running back has entered the transfer portal.

Spartans head coach Harlon Barnett met with the media on Monday following the team’s bye week, and he announced Jordon Simmons is no longer with the program. Simmons has entered the transfer portal, and according to Barnett is the only player to leave the program during the bye week.

Simmons has been with Michigan State since 2020 and has appeared in 34 career games. In those 34 games, he’s recorded 520 rushing yards on 137 attempts.

Bills sign Jordan Simmons amid O-line injury issues

#Bills sign Jordan Simmons amid O-line injury issues:

The Buffalo Bills did not confirm the reason why, but it’s all too obvious of a time to sign Jordan Simmons.

On Monday ahead of the start of the team’s second day of 2022 training camp, the Bills announced the signing of Simmons to a one-year deal. The 28-year-old is a guard on the offensive line.

The transaction comes one day after Buffalo announced that free-agent signee Rodger Saffold was placed on the non-football injury list (NFI).

Right tackle Spencer Brown was limited on the first day of practice as well, but due to the nature of Simmons’ position, it appears he’s a replacement for Saffold.

Saffold, a 2021 Pro Bowler as a guard with the Tennessee Titans, suffered a rib injury prior to training camp. He sustained that during a car accident.

The Bills did not indicate Simmons is a plug-and-play replacement for Saffold on the depth chart, but it appears as if he is. Simmons’ signing could indicate Saffold might miss some extensive time, but the hope will be the 12-year veteran returns before the start of the regular season.

Simmons played in five games with the Las Vegas Raiders last season and has appeared in 25 total in his NFL career. He was originally an undrafted free agent signee of the Los Angeles Rams in 2017.

In 2021, Pro Football Focus graded Simmons poorly in those outings. He earn an overall mark of 48.6 from the football analytics outlet’s metrics.

Raiders bring back OG Jordan Simmons to replace injured Denzelle Good

Raiders bring back G Jordan Simmons to replace injured Denzelle Good

On Monday Night Football, we saw Denzelle Good’s season come to an end as soon as it began. On the seventh snap of the game, Good tore his ACL, ending his season. Recently signed Jermaine Eluemunor stepped in at right guard and played admirably, but more depth was still needed.

With the team returning to the practice field Wednesday in preparation for the Steelers next Sunday, they added that depth, signing Jordan Simmons off the Seahawks practice squad.

It’s been a few years, but once upon a time, Jordan Simmons was with the Raiders. The USC product was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2017 and spent the season on the Raiders’ practice squad. They even brought him back in 2018 and he spent the offseason with the team. This time when he was waived, the Seahawks claimed him off waivers. And that’s where he’s been ever since.

The 6-4, 339-pounder has appeared in 20 games with the Seahawks, starting nine games. Most of those appearances (14) and starts (6) were last season. But that wasn’t enough for him to make the roster out of camp this year, so he was free for the taking when the Raiders needed to take him back.

Seahawks bringing back 2 promising guards for practice squad

According to Brady Henderson at ESPN, guard Phil Haynes is back on the practice squad after clearing waivers last week.

The Seattle Seahawks come into 2021 with a surprising amount of depth at guard. In Damien Lewis and Gabe Jackson, they have two high-level starters. They’ve also got some quality options further down the depth chart, all the way down to the practice squad.

According to Brady Henderson at ESPN, guard Phil Haynes is back on the practice squad after clearing waivers last week.

Haynes has only played 11 snaps to date but he was a standout during the preseason on the right side at both guard and tackle.

The team is also planning to re-sign the promising Jordan Simmons, per Henderson.

Update: Simmons has been re-signed to the practice squad. To make room, the team promoted tight end Tyler Mabry to the 53-man roster.

Seahawks agree to 1-year deal with guard Jordan Simmons

The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to a one-year deal with guard Jordan Simmons, after declining to tender him as a restricted free agent.

The Seattle Seahawks are working to ensure depth on their offensive line heading into the 2021 season. Seattle will be re-signing guard Jordan Simmons, according to Brady Henderson of ESPN.

“The Seahawks have agreed to a one-year deal with guard Jordan Simmons, a source tells me,” Henderson tweeted Wednesday morning. “He made six starts for Seattle last season and is coming back as O-line depth behind Gabe Jackson and Damien Lewis. Simmons’ deal includes incentives for playing time.”

Other media outlets have now verified this report.

The Seahawks did not tender Simmons this year as a restricted free agent, but are now able to get him back for another year.

Michigan State vs. Penn State: Spartans choke lead, lose 39-24

Michigan State had the lead for the early portions of the game, but could not hold on to it as the Nittany Lions came back to win 39-24.

[jwplayer YnMbAo01-PROpJzTY]

It was a tale of two halves for the Spartans today. Michigan State had the lead for the early portions of the game, but could not hold on to it as the Nittany Lions came back to win 39-24. The Spartans looked like a good team in first half and a horrific team in the second half. Payton Thorne got the start at quarterback today, after Rocky Lombardi’s injury last week.

Thorne struggled in his first drive as the starter as he threw an interception. He was given another chance as they fumbled the interception on the return and got the ball back. He didn’t do much with it as they went three-and-out.

Penn State marched down the field on their first drive and seemed to have a rushing touchdown, but was called back after a holding call. The Nittany Lions stalled out and had to settle for a field goal.

Both teams exchanged punts which led into the second quarter. The Spartans began their fourth drive of the game with two rushes by true freshman Jordan Simmons. Thorne capped off the drive with a 45-yard play-action touchdown pass to Jalen Nailor for 45 yards.

Penn State answered right back with a 31-yard rushing touchdown from Sean Clifford. That wouldn’t faze Thorne though, as the Spartans had a nice drive that ended with a 26-yard passing touchdown to Tre’Von Morgan.

The Spartans defense held strong and got the ball back with a little over three minutes left in the half. Thorne picked his way through the defense and was able to find Jalen Nailor again for a 7-yard touchdown. The Spartans would head into the half with a 21-10 lead.

Penn State got the ball to begin the second half and had their way with the defense that resulted in a Parker Washington 8-yard touchdown from Clifford. Penn State went for two and got it on a pass to Jahan Dotson.

The Spartans were able to get the ball downfield, but could not punch it in from the red zone and settled for a field goal from Matt Coghlin to make it 24-18.

The Nittany Lions stormed down the field and capitalized with a Will Levis 1-yard rushing touchdown and took the lead 25-24.

The Spartans went three-and-out and the Nittany Lions immediately made them pay for it as they scored again on a 49-yard touchdown to Washington to make it 32-24.

The Spartans continued the offensive woes and punted the ball right back to Penn State which was returned 81-yards by Jahan Dotson to make the score 39-24.

Fast forward to about two minutes left in the game, the Spartans make a fourth-down stop to get the ball back. Thorne leads an emphatic and trying drive to the red zone. Unfortunately, it ended with an incomplete pass on fourth down to effectively end the game.

Thorne finished the game with 22/39 passing for 325 passing yards and three touchdowns. He also threw an interception.

Jordan Simmons led the way in the backfield with 14 carries for 72 yards.

Jalen Nailor had the bulk of the receptions for the Spartans and finished with six receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Pete Carroll provides injury updates following Seahawks’ loss to Rams

Coach Pete Carroll provided a number of player injury updates following the Seattle Seahawks’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams Week 10.

The Seattle Seahawks suffered a number of new injuries in their heartbreaking loss Week 10 to the Rams in Los Angeles. Coach Pete Carroll provided a number of player updates following the game.

Cornerback Neiko Thorpe was just activated back to the 53-man roster from the injured reserve on Saturday, but it appears it might have been too soon.

“Neiko, his groin didn’t make it,” Carroll said. “In all the time we spent trying to get him back, we thought we had him. He had a lot of time to get ready but it acted up again.”

Safety Jamal Adams, who is finally back in play after a groin injury early in the season, briefly left the game to have his shoulder looked at but was able to return and finish the contest.

Carroll also said Travis Homer hurt his hand, Jordan Simmons suffered some calf tightness and Kyler Fuller sprained his ankle.

The Seahawks have a short week ahead, set to square off against the Cardinals at home Thursday night.

Is this the last chance for offensive lineman Ethan Pocic?

The 2017 NFL draft has been full of duds, including offensive lineman Ethan Pocic. Is it time for the Seattle Seahawks to cut bait?

The Seattle Seahawks’ 2017 NFL draft class is not shaping up to be one of their best.

Pro Bowl corner Shaquill Griffin was a strong pick in the third round, and the team used their second seventh round pick on Chris Carson, but outside of those two picks the class as a whole has disappointed.

Malik McDowell, Amara Darboh, Nazair Jones, and Tedric Thompson are among the early round picks who either never suited up for Seattle, or are no longer with the club thanks to poor performances.

David Moore, Lano Hill, and Ethan Pocic are still with the team, but all three of them could be roster casualties if they don’t prove they deserve another chance during the 2020 season.

Pocic was the first one selected of the group, coming to the Seahawks as a late second round pick. The versatile offensive lineman only played in four games last year, starting one and appearing in 91 total offensive snaps before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

All told, Pocic has appeared in 30 games for the Seahawks, playing every position on the line except left tackle. That versatility is what made him appealing to Seattle in the first place, but his performance thus far has not been enough for him to earn a starting role.

Heading into year four, the door may look more open after the team’s release of D.J. Fluker and Justin Britt, two starters from last year’s line, but the addition of free agents B.J. Finney and Chance Warmack and the selection of hulking guard Damien Lewis in the draft seem to indicate the team is going in a different direction.

Lewis, Finney and Warmack will compete with a host of other interior offensive linemen, including Jordan Simmons, Mike Iupati, Phil Haynes, Joey Hunt and Jordan Roos, for spots on the offensive line in 2020.

Pocic’s best chance of making the roster is at backup center, where Finney is expected to start. He’ll be in direct competition with Hunt, the team’s backup center since 2016, and could face competition from Kyle Fuller and Haynes, who played some center in practice last year.

Pocic could theoretically challenge for a backup spot at tackle as well, where there is considerably less depth, but considering his best performances (which still aren’t great) have been on the interior, it’s unlikely he’d have what it takes to make it at that spot either.

The big question is if Seattle is willing to move on from a second round pick this quickly into his career, but considering the recent move to release both Jones (third round) and Thompson (fourth round) it might be time to cut bait on Pocic and admit that, outside of Griffin, Moore, and Carson, the 2017 draft just didn’t get the job done in the Emerald City.

Mike Iupati brought in to compete with Phil Haynes at left guard

The Seattle Seahawks aren’t just handing veteran Mike Iupati his old job at left guard, he will have to compete with Phil Haynes for it.

Speaking on the radio at 950 KJR, Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider provided some clarity to the team’s guard situation following the selection of Damien Lewis and the subsequent release of veteran guard D.J. Fluker.

“Everybody felt like we were drafting a starting right guard in the National Football League,” Schneider said about Lewis, the team’s third round pick in the 2020 NFL draft. “He’s just a man.”

Even after cutting Fluker though, the team won’t just hand a rookie a starting job on the offensive line. Chance Warmack, who they signed early into free agency, is a former first round pick who the team believes has the ability to start in the NFL as well, and the team brought back Jordan Simmons, who started a few games for them back in 2018.

However, one of the expected sources of competition, 2019 fourth rounder Phil Haynes, is apparently going to compete to start at left guard with veteran Mike Iupati, who the team re-signed last month.

Schneider said the team decided to, “bring Mike Iupati back to add some stability on the left side [and] to compete with Phil Haynes.”

Iupati started every game he played last year, but evidently the little the team saw of Haynes near the end of the year was enough for them to consider it an open competition – which also bodes well for Lewis potentially starting on the right side.

No job is guaranteed on the Seahawks, except Russell Wilson’s, so the position battles all along the offensive line should be fun to track over the summer as this team looks to put the most competitive product on the field ahead of the 2020 campaign.
