Where Badgers landed in Jordan Reid’s seven-round 2023 NFL mock draft

See where ESPN’s Jordan Reid placed three former Wisconsin players in his 2023 NFL mock draft:

On Tuesday morning, ESPN NFL draft analyst Jordan Reid released his seven-round 2023 NFL mock draft. Three former Wisconsin players were drafted in Reid’s mock draft including outside linebacker Nick Herbig, defensive tackle Keeanu Benton and interior offensive lineman Joe Tippmann.

Even though Nick Herbig’s size has been a concern for potential suitors, the Big Ten’s leader in sacks and tackles for loss last season could be a potential bargain for the team that drafts him. Benton and Tippmann have impressed so far in the pre-draft process and have seen their stock significantly rise from the end of the season.

It is exciting to see that Badgers are projected to go high in this year’s draft with both Tippmann and Benton predicted to go in the second and third rounds of the draft by several analysts.

Look below to see where ESPN’s Jordan Reid placed these three former Wisconsin players in his 2023 NFL mock draft:

ESPN’s Jordan Reid sends Vikings a CB in his first mock draft

Secondary help is going to be a popular choice for the Vikings

Now that it’s January, mock drafts will be coming fast and furious and we can’t wait to bring it all to you as April’s draft gets closer and closer.

The latest one comes from Minnesota Vikings expert and current ESPN analyst Jordan Reid. He knows this team better than just about anyone in the NFL draft community and Reid showed it by sending the Vikings South Carolina cornerback Cam Smith.

Here is what Reid had to say about the talented Gamecock.

“General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah showed in his first draft in Minnesota that he values initial quickness, and after the Vikings struggled mightily in pass defense this season (7.8 yards allowed per attempt, 31st in the NFL), they will be seeking defensive backs who show good burst and can make plays on the ball. Smith checks those boxes and has experience in the slot and on the outside. He has four picks and 17 pass breakups over the past two seasons, too. Patrick Peterson and Chandon Sullivan are on expiring deals, and Cameron Dantzler Sr. will be entering the final year of his contract in 2023, so cornerback depth will be a spot to watch.”

Having that type of versatility would serve the Vikings really well as they continue to rebuild their secondary.

ESPN has two Notre Dame players predicted to be 1st round NFL Draft selections

You know which two but where do they land?

Ahead of the season starting ESPN wanted to get one more mock draft out there, this one by Jordan Reid. Plenty will change between now and when players are actually selected, so it is interesting to see who stays as one of the best options, who falls and who rises. For Notre Dame, they seem to have at least two sure-fire draft eligible first-round selections. Find out where they were projected to go and with which pick.

An ESPN NFL Draft Analyst took to Twitter this week with an NFL comparison for Clemson junior linebacker Trenton Simpson, who is widely considered a top prospect for next year’s draft.

ESPN’s Jordan Reid likened Simpson to a rising NFL star in former Notre Dame and current Cleveland Browns linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, who was drafted by the Browns in the second round (52nd overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Reid wrote on Twitter that Simpson is “cut from a similar cloth” to Owusu-Koramoah, but noted that the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Simpson is bigger than the 6-foot-2, 221-pound Owusu-Koramoah.

Owusu-Koramoah played in 27 games with 142 tackles, five forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and one interception at Notre Dame from 2018-20. He was named named ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2020, and won the Butkus Award and was a unanimous All-America selection that season, after registering 62 tackles, 1.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and one interception in 12 games.

Owusu-Koramoah played like a budding star as a rookie with the Browns last season, posted 76 total tackles, three tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, four quarterback hits, four passes defended and two forced fumbles in 14 games.

Simpson, meanwhile, enters his junior season at Clemson in 2022 credited with 110 tackles (18.5 for loss), 10.0 sacks, three pass breakups and a forced fumble over 25 games (15 starts).

Last season, the former five-star prospect from Mallard Creek High School (Charlotte, N.C.) ranked third on the team with 78 tackles and finished second in both tackles for loss (12.0) and sacks (6.0) while also adding three pass breakups in 13 games (12 starts). He earned all-conference selections from PFF (second team) and Phil Steele (third team).

Simpson was recently ranked as the No. 25 overall prospect in next year’s draft class on ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. 2023 Big Board (subscription required), while he was ranked as the No. 8 prospect for the 2023 NFL Draft by CBS Sports this week.

Simpson was named a second-team preseason All-American by Phil Steele Magazine this week.

ESPN analyst believes Booth could be a ‘massive steal’ for Vikings

ESPN NFL Draft Analyst Jordan Reid believes the best value pick in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft came when the Minnesota Vikings selected former Clemson cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. with the 42nd overall pick.

Reid wrote in an ESPN+ article (subscription required) this week that he thinks Booth could be a “massive steal” for the Vikings and that the pick could pay major dividends for the franchise in the future.

“Andrew Booth Jr. was my No. 3 cornerback in this class,” Reid wrote. “The Vikings getting him with the No. 42 pick has a chance to be a massive steal. Heading into the pre-draft process, the former Clemson standout was seen as a potential top-20 pick. After suffering a quad strain during the days leading up to the NFL combine and having sports hernia surgery for the second time in April, there were questions about his long-term durability. The Vikings showed to be confident in his long-term outlook, and it could pay off for them in a big way down the road.”

Booth recorded 39 tackles (3.0 for loss), five pass breakups and a team-high three interceptions in 11 games (all starts) last season en route to first-team All-ACC honors.

The Dacula, Ga., native finished his three-year career with the Tigers (2019-21) with 75 tackles (5.5 for loss), 10 pass breakups, five interceptions, a sack and a fumble recovery (which he returned 21 yards for a touchdown) over 35 career games (15 starts).

Eagles stock up on versatile defenders in ESPN’s 7-round mock draft

Philadelphia Eagles stock up on versatile defenders in Jordan Reid’s 7-round mock draft for ESPN

The Eagles had a solid start to the NFL’s free-agent period and after adding Haason Reddick, Kyzir White, and Zach Pascal, the organization will now shift its focus toward the NFL draft.

Philadelphia has needs at cornerback, wide receiver, and defensive tackle, but the expectation is that Howie Roseman will add depth at defensive end, safety, and offensive line as well.

Jordan Reid revealed his latest mock draft for ESPN, and the skilled talent evaluator has the Birds stocking up on versatile defenders.

Mock Draft Watch: ESPN’s Jordan Reid’s new two rounder answers big needs

ESPN’s newest draft expert has the team addressing WR and DE in his two-round mock:

The Cleveland Browns have two or three big needs depending on how they sort out their roster early in the offseason. The clear belief is that the team must address their wide receiver and defensive line positions. With the team’s stated belief in Baker Mayfield having a “bounce back” year, adding playmakers around him is vital.

That is especially true with recent data that shows good passing offenses are key to making the Super Bowl.

In our Browns Mock Offseason 1.0, we addressed both positions with veterans and draft picks. Most mock drafts are one round and have Cleveland drafting a receiver in the first round. While it isn’t always the same receiver, it is almost always a receiver.

A new mock draft up on ESPN is actually a two-round version. While most are used to seeing Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay for ESPN’s NFL draft coverage, they added Jordan Reid to the mix this year. Reid was hired from The Draft Network where he made his media name after a four-year career at quarterback at North Carolina Central University.

In his recent two-round mock (subscriber, $), Reid hits both of the Browns biggest need areas:

Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas

The Browns, who rely heavily on analytics-based scouting, are in desperate need of pass catchers, and Burks could meet the criteria they use for prospects. At 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, he is expected to run a 40-yard dash in the 4.4s and wears Size 5XL gloves. Burks, who caught 66 passes for 1,104 yards in 2021, could be a versatile weapon in Kevin Stefanski’s offense, which has to get playmakers around Baker Mayfield. Expect him to be a riser in the pre-draft process.

Burks could be the first receiver off the board by the time the draft is held in Las Vegas for all the reasons Reid notes above. In his mock, Garrett Wilson is taken a few picks before Cleveland’s pick.

In the second round, Reid added edge rusher Drake Jackson out of USC for the Browns. The 6’4″ junior is athletic and could come in right away to help the team’s weak defensive line depth issue.

ESPN projects one Notre Dame player selected in NFL Draft’s first two rounds

We know who, but where does he go?

The NFL is concluding their year, with the Super Bowl coming this weekend.  Teams who aren’t involved have already turned their focus to the next big event in the NFL calendar, the draft.

Many teams have been out scouting, with the East-West Shrine and Senior Bowl’s having been played, projections to where players might end up in April’s draft have started to emerge. ESPN’s Jordan Reid (insider) was one of them, as he posted his two-round mock draft and only one Notre Dame player made his list, safety Kyle Hamilton. Reid has the former All-American going seventh overall to the New York Giants.

This isn’t a surprise that Hamilton is projected to go early, but not having running back Kyren Williams is. No backs were projected to go in the first round and just one, Texas A&M’s Isaiah Spiller, is expected to go in the first two rounds.

This is surely to change with the NFL Combine, Pro-Day’s and private workouts ahead, but it is interesting to see where players stand at this junction.

Now what: Potential names to replace Jordan Reid at right tackle for Michigan State

Michigan State will have to replace its most experienced lineman for the 2020 season.

Senior offensive lineman Jordan Reid became the second Michigan State football player to opt out of the 2020 season on Friday morning, joining senior defensive lineman Jacub Panasiuk.

Reid has been the only consistently health Spartan along the offensive line over the last two seasons, starting 26 of 26 games at right tackle. That fact means his departure leaves a hole in a unit that can ill afford to have holes at this point in time.

That begs the question, now what? What does the MSU staff do to replace the lone consistent starter on the offensive line.

I’ll go through a few names to keep an eye on in a bit, but it is worth mentioning that Reid’s day at tackle may have been numbered anyway. I’m not sure what the “rep chart” at MSU looks like on the offensive line right now, but there’s a chance Reid would be kicking inside to guard this season. Reid, listed at 6-foot-4, doesn’t exactly fit the profile of what the new staff wants in its tackles. It may not seem like a big deal because it’s only a couple of inches, but 6-foot-6 and taller–with long arms–is the new standard. Reid’s experience is nice, but he and every other lineman are learning a new offense with new blocking schemes. MSU dabbled in zone blocking in 2019, but will go full fledged in 2020. Lastly, Reid’s best future is at guard or even center. He’s built and moves like an interior lineman.

On paper it looks like MSU lost a shoo-in starter at right tackle, but that might not be how the staff is looking at this depending on what their plans for Reid were.

Let’s get to some names to keep an eye on for the right tackle spot.
