Targeting upside for the future in this Cleveland Browns mock draft

This year’s draft is almost here kicking off in less than a week.

The 2023 NFL draft is nearly here as it is set to kick off this coming Thursday with Round 1. The Cleveland Browns won’t get started drafting until later on Friday, being without a first- or second-round pick this year. The team has had a quality free agency period, which gives them plenty of flexibility heading into this year’s draft.

The Browns don’t have to force a position this year as the biggest needs are all rotational and depth pieces. They do need to focus on certain areas but can do so in whatever round a talented player falls to them. Let’s take a look at what I think would be a great haul with an eye for the future.

Browns add playmakers to both sides of the ball in this 2023 NFL Mock Draft

The Browns get more impact players on both sides of the ball.

The 2023 NFL Draft cycle is starting to heat up with the Senior Bowl in Mobile right around the corner. The Browns’ defensive line needs a maker over at both positions, especially with the arrival of Jim Schwartz. Schwartz is known for his ability to manipulate offensive lines to get favorable matchups.

The team needs to utilize the draft and free agency to re-make this defensive line for more success next season. The defense isn’t the only side of the ball that needs additions as the offense must figure out how to get more explosive.

This mock draft looks at a way to get playmakers in several different areas to improve the team.

2022 NFL mock draft: 7-round projections for the Browns

Here’s how all seven rounds of the 2022 NFL draft could shake out for the Cleveland Browns

The 2022 NFL draft is just hours away, and your favorite NFL team is about to add tons of young talent to help improve their chances of success in the upcoming season.

Here’s how all seven rounds of this year’s draft could shake out for the Cleveland Browns:

Browns Mock Draft: All Offense Edition

What could an “all offense” draft look like for the Browns in 2022? The final pick of this mock is an interesting comeback story at QB:

There are a variety of goals when it comes to NFL mock drafts. Late in the process, the goal is about accuracy primarily. Mock drafters hope to get exact matches of players to teams or, at least, match positions to teams.

Prior to that, at least for this site, there are three goals:

  1. Process roster building for the Cleveland Browns related to the draft. ‘What could be?’
  2. Introduce different players to the readers
  3. Enjoy exploring the ‘what ifs’

Today’s mock draft is a little of the second two with a small portion of the first. Earlier this week, we shared data showing that a vast majority of the last 10 Super Bowl participants have excelled on offense, specifically passing offense. While the Browns could look to the alternate route for 2022, that data might be compelling to them about how they spend their resources.

An all offense draft is highly unlikely for a variety of reasons for Cleveland. The first is that the team currently is slated to have nine picks. The second is that the team has some important needs on the defensive line. The third is pigeonholing themselves into only drafting offense is just not smart.

Unlike our Mock Offseason 1.0, which had free agency as well as a mock draft, today we just bring you a mock draft.

All that said, we still went with an all offense Browns mock draft today. Knowing that was the plan going in really opened up the options starting with the first pick. For today’s mock, we used Pro Football Network’s mock draft simulator.

Mock Draft Watch: ESPN’s Jordan Reid’s new two rounder answers big needs

ESPN’s newest draft expert has the team addressing WR and DE in his two-round mock:

The Cleveland Browns have two or three big needs depending on how they sort out their roster early in the offseason. The clear belief is that the team must address their wide receiver and defensive line positions. With the team’s stated belief in Baker Mayfield having a “bounce back” year, adding playmakers around him is vital.

That is especially true with recent data that shows good passing offenses are key to making the Super Bowl.

In our Browns Mock Offseason 1.0, we addressed both positions with veterans and draft picks. Most mock drafts are one round and have Cleveland drafting a receiver in the first round. While it isn’t always the same receiver, it is almost always a receiver.

A new mock draft up on ESPN is actually a two-round version. While most are used to seeing Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay for ESPN’s NFL draft coverage, they added Jordan Reid to the mix this year. Reid was hired from The Draft Network where he made his media name after a four-year career at quarterback at North Carolina Central University.

In his recent two-round mock (subscriber, $), Reid hits both of the Browns biggest need areas:

Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas

The Browns, who rely heavily on analytics-based scouting, are in desperate need of pass catchers, and Burks could meet the criteria they use for prospects. At 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, he is expected to run a 40-yard dash in the 4.4s and wears Size 5XL gloves. Burks, who caught 66 passes for 1,104 yards in 2021, could be a versatile weapon in Kevin Stefanski’s offense, which has to get playmakers around Baker Mayfield. Expect him to be a riser in the pre-draft process.

Burks could be the first receiver off the board by the time the draft is held in Las Vegas for all the reasons Reid notes above. In his mock, Garrett Wilson is taken a few picks before Cleveland’s pick.

In the second round, Reid added edge rusher Drake Jackson out of USC for the Browns. The 6’4″ junior is athletic and could come in right away to help the team’s weak defensive line depth issue.

2022 Browns NFL Mock Draft – June 2021 Edition

With a little break until training camp, taking a look far ahead to the 2022 NFL draft with a Browns mock draft.

There is a lot that is going to happen between now and the 2022 NFL draft. A lot of things to be excited about, for sure, when it comes to the Cleveland Browns.

That doesn’t mean we can’t also look forward to the 2022 NFL draft with a mock draft. Early mock drafts have two goals, overall. The first is to think ahead to what needs could be next offseason. We started that by taking a look at all the contributors that could be free agents after this season.

The second goal of early mock drafts is to start getting to know some of the players that could be of interest to the Browns in the upcoming draft. Early knowledge can help fans watch college football with the NFL draft in mind. It can also give us something to look back on next offseason as well.

Today, we used Pro Football Network’s Mock Draft Simulator to help us create our Browns mock draft.

2022 Browns 4-round mock draft

While the 2021 NFL season is expected to be an exciting one for the Cleveland Browns, we glance ahead to 2022 with a mock draft.

The 2021 NFL draft is over and done with. The Cleveland Browns had a very good three days and the city of Cleveland shined bright hosting the event.

While there is a lot of things that will happen between the 2021 draft and the 2022 version in Las Vegas, we thought it would be fun to give you a short, 4-round, Browns mock draft to whet your appetite.

We are well aware that the 2021 training camp, season, and playoffs are front and center on your mind right now. As well they should be. Today’s mock is to start to introduce you to some of the names you may be hearing about after the Browns season ends.

So after the 2021 season, one many expect to be a successful one, ends what could the Browns do to add to their roster? We won’t assume any players leaving but we do assume the Browns will not be as active in free agency as they have been the last two years.

We will be using Pro Football Network’s mock draft simulator.

On to the Browns mock draft!

Round 1

Edge Myjai Sanders – Cincinnati

With Takk McKinley and Jadeveon Clowney on one-year contracts, the Browns stay in-state to add an explosive edge player in Sanders.

Round 2

WR John Metchie III – Alabama

With Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry on the roster, the Browns have a very good wide receiver tandem. They have also added players to the room over the past two years. Metchie is unlikely to be available at this point but, given this early mock, we select him here as the roster replacement for either Rashard Higgins or KhaDarel Hodge.

Round 3

CB Trent McDuffie – Washington

Continuing a trend of sons of former players joining the league, specifically in the secondary, McDuffie is the son of former NFL wide receiver O.J. McDuffie. In a pass-first NFL, the Browns can never have enough corners despite drafting Gregg Newsome II in 2021.

Round 4

DT Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa – Notre Dame

Cousin of Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, MTA could join his former teammate Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah in Cleveland. JOK and MTA could be a force together at the next level.

TE Trae Barry – Jacksonville State

With David Njoku set to be a free agent at this point and Austin Hooper coming off a down first season with the Browns, adding another potential tight end weapon for Kevin Stefanski’s offense makes a lot of sense. Barry is a big one, standing 6’7″ and is a developmental prospect with immediate redzone capabilities.

Final prediction for the Browns in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft

Final prediction for the Browns in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft

What are the Cleveland Browns going to do in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft? It’s a burning question that finally gets answered on Thursday night.

Months of mock drafts, projections, arguments, film sessions, interviews and research all come together tonight. What will GM Andrew Berry do in the first round of his first draft running the Browns?

There are a few options with the No. 10 pick. Should the Browns keep the pick, the players who figure to have made the final cut for the new regime (in alphabetical order):

  • Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville
  • Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn
  • Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson
  • Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia
  • Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
  • Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa

It’s hard to imagine the Browns choosing any other players with the 10th pick.

There will be opportunities to trade back from No. 10. Recent rumors given various levels of credulity come from Denver (No. 15), Atlanta (No. 16) and Philadelphia (No. 21).

Or Berry could prove he’s really not kidding about his “aggressively acquiring talent” mantra and trade up from No. 10.

Prediction

In the end, I think the Browns will trade back from No. 10. My money is on working a deal with the Broncos to pick up No. 15 and two of Denver’s three third-round picks. With the No. 15 pick, the Browns select Houston OT Josh Jones.

In addition, I predict the Browns will make a trade for Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams.
