The door is open for Texas RB Jonathon Brooks in the Alamo Bowl

Jonathon Brooks is ready for the spotlight.

Texas enters its Alamo Bowl matchup with No. 12 Washington a bit shorthanded.

The dynamic running back duo of Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson are opting out of the bowl game to prepare for the 2023 NFL Draft. Without Robinson and Johnson in the fold, Texas’ running game is set to look a bit different.

Sophomore Jonathon Brooks has a significant opportunity in front of him in San Antonio. Brooks has shined in limited chances in his first two seasons with the Longhorns. He has rushed for 322 yards and five touchdowns on an excellent 7.2 yards per carry clip in his career.

Brooks is impressing during bowl practices while getting full snaps as the starting back. Roschon Johnson describes how Brooks “makes the game look easy” at times.

One can see Brooks is ready to take the next step. He flashed fantastic vision and quickness in multiple games on the season. Brooks even showed breakaway speed on a 70-yard scamper against Kansas in November.

Texas got back in the win column with a dominant victory over Kansas on Saturday. The Longhorns controlled the game from the jump, cruising to a 55-14 win on the road.

Texas’ running game ran all over the Jayhawks’ defense, totaling a season-high 427 rushing yards as a team.

Sophomore running back Jonathon Brooks added an outstanding performance in mop-up duty. Brooks tallied 108 yards on the ground and two scores. He took a handoff 70 yards to the house as an exclamation point.

The Longhorns’ defense provided another excellent showing on the season. They held Kansas’ dynamic offense to just 14 points on 346 yards of total offense. Texas got off the field on two critical fourth downs early on, setting up the offense for success.

Texas signee Jonathon Brooks passes Cedric Benson on Texas high school rushing list

The newest Texas Longhorns signee Jonathon Brooks had a historic night for Hallettsville in the 3A state championship game.

On Wednesday Hallettsville running back Jonathon Brooks became one of the 19 recruits to sign their letter of intent to become part of the next class of Texas Longhorns. On Thursday he was back on the field in Arlington, Texas at AT&T Stadium to attempt to lead his team to their first-ever Texas 3A state championship.

The unfortunate part is that Hallettsville would fall to Jim Ned 29-28 in overtime. Brooks would be named the game MVP for his effort. He set a 3A state record with 299 yards rushing in the game. He would score three of the four touchdowns for his team, including the opening score of the game and their overtime touchdown.

According to Horns247, that wasn’t the only milestone that Brooks would achieve on the night. He would pass former Longhorns running back Cedric Benson on the all-time rushing list in the state of Texas. His 3,565 career rushing yards put Brooks just ahead of Benson (3,526) from his time in Midland.

His 69 total touchdowns during the senior campaign were second all-time to Jonathan Gray, another former Texas Longhorns running back. Horns247 had a full breakdown of all his accomplishments throughout his high school career. The next step for Brooks is graduating high school and heading to the Forty Acres to join Bijan Robinson, Roschon Johnson, and Keaontay Ingram in the backfield for the Longhorns.
