WATCH: Highlights from Johnny Davis’ career day in the win over Texas A&M

The Badger wing has a career day in Vegas

Given Wisconsin’s turn towards youth, there should be many career nights in year two for Badger wing Johnny Davis. The first came on Monday afternoon, when the La Crosse native helped lead Wisconsin back from down 16 points in their Maui Invitational win over Texas A&M.

Davis went 8-18 from the field, finishing with a career-high 21 points in Wisconsin’s 69-58 win over the Aggies. Davis also added a career-best 9 rebounds to his tally.

The scoring came in a variety of ways, as he found success in the midrange, came up with second chance points, and sunk a three during Wisconsin’s late first-half run that got them back in the game.

Here is a look at his highlights from Day 1 in Vegas, courtesy of Wisconsin basketball on Twitter:

The week off since their loss to Providence has helped the Badgers get healthy, as they should be returning star sophomore guard Jonathan Davis against the Aggies after he suffered a foot injury in the first half against the Green Bay Phoenix. Davis’ return will be important for Wisconsin, who struggled offensively against the Friars.

An undefeated Texas A&M will be another tough test for this young Wisconsin team, but the return of Jonathan Davis should be huge in helping the Badgers’ scoring difficulties.

An injury update on Jonathan Davis as Wisconsin basketball heads to the Maui Invitational

The Badger wing suffered a foot injury that held him out against Providence

In Wisconsin’s first loss of the season, the absence of star wing Jonathan Davis was felt from the jump. The Badgers failed to generate enough offensive playmaking in a 63-58 loss to Providence. Wisconsin listed the injury to Davis as a lower body issue, and one that put the former La Crosse star as day-to-day.

When speaking with reporters earlier this week, Davis mentioned that he feared his foot injury could have been more serious than it turned out. The Badger star fortunately had x-rays that came back negative and he was determined good to go for the Maui Invitational.

Davis is set to play in Wisconsin’s opener on Monday when the Badgers take on Texas A&M in Las Vegas.

Film Room: Wisconsin’s offense against Providence

A look at Wisconsin’s offensive output against Providence

Wisconsin came up short in their first test of the 2021-22 season as the Badgers fell to Providence 63-58 in a low-scoring affair on Monday night.

It was a postgame box score that once again made it look like the Badgers (2-1) were searching for offensive answers against the first difficult defense they have faced all year. The film, however, doesn’t fully support that narrative.

Neither does a deeper statistical look at the shots Wisconsin was able to generate. Shot Quality, a company that specializes in analyzing the quality of shots that teams get within a game, put out an eye-opening postgame report. Based on the shots that both teams took, Wisconsin was expected to win by 15 points, but ended up losing by 5:

The Badgers went just 5-27 (18.5%) from distance, with three of the five makes coming from senior guard Brad Davison. Were they all excellent looks that simply didn’t go down? No, but there were a healthy chunk of jumpers that you would take within the offensive flow that simply didn’t fall.

Wisconsin missing their best offensive player in Jonathan Davis certainly contributed to the overall scoring output, but this early in the season process is more important than results. There were many times on Monday night where it felt like the Badgers’ process was sound, but the results left a lot to be desired.

Here is a look at some of those offensive processes, both good and bad, from Wisconsin’s loss to Providence:

LOOK: Wisconsin basketball releases their Big Ten schedule

The Wisconsin basketball 2021-22 Big Ten schedule is out:

Earlier this afternoon, the Big Ten released 2021-22 schedules for the entire conference season. Wisconsin basketball opens the season at home and finishes with a pair of home games in their 20-game conference slate.

Replacing a number of senior contributors will be a challenge for the 2021-22 Badgers as sophomore Jonathan Davis steps into a lead role alongside a number of freshman. The guidance of senior leadership will be found with returning guard Brad Davison, who is back for his fifth and final year as a Badger.

Wisconsin will be vying for an NCAA Tournament berth alongside a stacked Big Ten conference. Here is a look at their complete conference schedule, which begins on December 8:

Jonathan Davis says Greg Gard ‘knows he’s got some things to change’ moving forward

Jonathan Davis says Greg Gard ‘knows he’s got some things to change’ moving forward

Wisconsin guard Jonathan Davis has become the first Wisconsin player to speak on the tumultuous last few months within the Wisconsin basketball program.

During an interview with WXOW sports anchor Declan Levy, the Badger guard had a few interesting things to say about the much-publicized audio leak, his relationship with head coach Greg Gard and whether he ever considered transferring.

His answers make sense when you think back to the leaked audiotape and consider the thoughts of last year’s senior class. The players expressed problems they had with how Gard operated and said they don’t have much of a relationship, if any, with the coach.

In all honesty, those are still things that need to change, even with assistant coach Alando Tucker and most of the senior class gone from the program.

However, Davis noted Gard has made a concerted effort to meet with players and incoming recruits and work on those relationships — something the sophomore guard said the head coach has done a “much better job at.”

This is probably a sentiment we’ll hear as the season nears and gets underway, as it’ll undoubtedly be a question posed to every player and coach made available to the media.

LOOK: Meet the 2021-22 Wisconsin men’s basketball team

Our first look at the 2021-22 Wisconsin men’s basketball team as they gear up for the upcoming season

On Friday afternoon, Wisconsin men’s basketball tweeted out individual promotional photos of the entire 2021-22 Badger basketball roster along with the player’s social media handles.

This is the first time that we are getting to see this year’s team geared up, and there are quite a few new faces including transfers Chris Vogt, Jahcobi Neath and Isaac Lindsey as well as incoming freshmen like Markus Ilver, Chucky Hepburn and Matthew Mors.

Although there are a lot of new faces going into the upcoming season, the Badgers will still be returning the experienced leadership of guard Brad Davison as well as several key contributors from last season like Jonathan Davis and Tyler Wahl.

Below is the entire 2021-22 Wisconsin men’s basketball team as they gear up for the upcoming season:

WATCH: Jonathan Davis’ shot looks smooth in his action with USA’s U19 World Cup Team

Jonathan Davis’ keeps shooting for the USA U19 FIBA World Cup team

The USA U19 basketball team is running through the FIBA World Cup, having never trailed during their first five games of action.

The latest victory came today in the form of an 88-58 rout of Senegal.

Jonathan Davis has played a wing guard role for the team, primarily taking shots from the outside as Purdue’s Jaden Ivey drives to the hoop and dominates defenders.

But after a freshman year that saw Davis average 7 points and shoot 39 percent from beyond the arc, outside scoring ability is great to see as Davis prepares for his sophomore campaign.

To me, at least, his shot looks smooth and fluid from outside the arc.

Catch Davis and the USA U19 team tomorrow when they face off against Canada in the tournament’s semi-finals.

Jonathan Davis and Team USA handle S. Korea, advance to FIBA U19 World Cup quarterfinals

Jonathan Davis and Team USA are headed to the quarterfinals at the FIBA U19 World Cup

Team USA made quick work of an overmatched South Korean squad on Wednesday afternoon at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Riga, Latvia.

The US jumped out to a 31-17 first quarter advantage and ended up more than doubling up the Koreans, winning 132-60 to advance to the quarterfinals and face Senegal. The Americans are a perfect 4-0 in Latvia while Senegal has gone 2-2.

Wisconsin’s Jonathan Davis was back in the starting lineup and he again shot the ball well on limited attempts. The Badger guard went 3-4 from the field and finished with 9 points. Gonzaga signee and 2021 number one player in the country Chet Holmgren led the US with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Up next in the knockout stage is a quarterfinal bout with Senegal on Friday.

WATCH: Jonathan Davis expands his range at the FIBA U-19 World Cup

The USA U-19 FIBA World Cup Team is on a tear, and Wisconsin’s Jonathan Davis is right at the center of it

Even if the 2021-22 basketball season is an up-and-down grind for the Wisconsin men’s basketball team, the development of guard Jonathan Davis will be a fun and captivating storyline to watch.

He flashed as a freshman last season, showing versatile ability on both sides of the court that pointed toward great things in coming years.

Right now, Davis is with the USA U-19 team at the FIBA World Cup. He’s playing alongside Purdue’s Jaden Ivey, Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren and UW-Milwaukee’s Patrick Baldwin Jr. And he’s helping the team put on a show for basketball fans back home.

Here is his latest highlight, drilling a wing 3-pointer after a great skip pass from Baldwin.

Davis and his team are 3-0 after today’s 87-66 victory over Australia and open the knockout rounds against South Korea on Wednesday.
