Browns long snapper Charley Hughlett placed on reserve/COVID-19 list

The Browns placed long snapper Charley Hughlett and practice squad RB Johnny Stanton on the reserve/COVID-19 list

Even at the start of a much-needed bye week, the Cleveland Browns continue to take hits to the roster. On Monday, the Browns placed long snapper Charley Hughlett on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Practice squad running back Johnny Stanton was also placed on that unit’s version of the COVID-19 list as well.

Per the NFL’s transaction wire, Hughlett did test positive for COVID-19. His vaccination status is unknown. The same is true of Stanton, who has also spent some time on the active roster this year.

With the Browns on a bye, Hughlett’s positive test has the potential to not impact the team. The veteran has been the team’s exclusive long snapper since the start of the 2015 season.

Browns activate 2 from IR, waive Andrew Billings in flurry of roster moves

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and M.J. Stewart are back, while Andrew Billings hits the waiver wire

The Cleveland Browns kept the recording secretary at the NFL’s transaction wire busy on Saturday. The Browns activated two players from injured reserve and waived DT Andrew Billings in the flurry of activity.

Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and cornerback M.J. Stewart have rejoined the active 53-man roster from the team’s IR. Both had been designated to return earlier by Cleveland and are now healthy enough to help the team.

To make room for Owusu-Koramoah and Stewart, the Browns waived veteran DT Andrew Billings. The other spot was still open from the departure of WR Odell Beckham Jr. earlier in the week.

Cleveland also elevated four players from the practice squad to help cover for the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak afflicting the team. Those elevated:

RB Brian Hill

CB Herb Miller

WR Jojo Natson

FB Johnny Stanton

Hill is designated a standard elevation, while the other three are COVID-19 promotions that will not count against the number of times they can be elevated. Hill just recently joined the Browns and now could be in line to get legit carries with three RBs all sidelined on the COVID-19 list.

Billings will be subject to waiver claims. He played just 72 snaps in six games and recorded one tackle.

Browns designate Andy Janovich for return from injured reserve after waiving Johnny Stanton

While all the TMZ-level drama was going on the last two days, the Browns waived a player and designated another to return from IR:

Some business actually got done in the last two days for the Cleveland Browns despite all of the Odell Beckham Jr. drama. While it will not rise to the TMZ-level of the Beckham/Baker Mayfield coverage, the team made two moves that coincide with each other over the last two days.

Yesterday, the Browns waived fullback Johnny Stanton with the expectation that he would be added back to the practice squad if not claimed.

Today, the team designated fullback Andy Janovich for return from injured reserve. Cleveland now has three weeks to activate him from the injured reserve list. With the decision to waive Stanton on the NFL’s trade deadline, it is likely that Janovich will be activated in time for the Week 9 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Janovich hurt his hamstring on October 12th leading to being placed on injured reserve. In his five games this season, he had two rushing attempts for zero yards and a touchdown. Janovich also caught a pass to convert on a two-point try against the Minnesota Vikings.

While replacing Janovich for three games, Stanton had two receptions, one for a touchdown, and two rushes for a total of five yards.

Johnny Stanton switches jersey numbers so John Johnson can wear No. 43 in Cleveland

Stanton will switch to No. 40

John Johnson will continue to be No. 43 in the program and on the field. Johnson will keep the same jersey number he wore with the Los Angeles Rams now that he’s in Cleveland, thanks to fullback Johnny Stanton.

Per Camryn Justice, Stanton has agreed to give up the No. 43 jersey in Cleveland so Johnson can keep on having the same number. The Browns signed Johnson to a three-year, $33.75 million deal this week in free agency.

Stanton, who joined the Browns last offseason, played sparingly in Cleveland last year. He logged just 12 offensive snaps and nine more on special teams in the Browns win over the Eagles. He will now wear No. 40.

Stanton is used to change. He was a quarterback in college and has also taken reps at running back in his NFL practice squad career with the Browns and Vikings.

Browns sign 14 players from the practice squad to reserve/futures contracts

All but one of the practice squad members from last week signed

The Browns coaching and management must have liked what they saw on the practice fields late in the year. On Monday, the Browns signed nearly all of the active practice squad roster from the week of the AFC divisional playoff round to reserve/futures contracts.

The 14 players

S Elijah Benton (Liberty)

WR Ja’Marcus Bradley (Louisiana-Lafayette)

TE Jordan Franks (Central Florida)

CB A.J. Green (Oklahoma State)

G Cordel Iwuagwu (Texas Christian)

QB Kyle Lauletta (Richmond)

DE Cameron Malveaux (Houston)

TE Kyle Markway (South Carolina)

K Matt McCrane (Kansas State)

LB Montrel Meander (Grambling State)

C Javon Patterson (Mississippi)

FB Johnny Stanton (UNLV)

T Alex Taylor (South Carolina State)

WR Derrick Willies (Texas Tech)

The only practice squad player from last week who did not sign with the team is CB Donovan Olumba, who was signed during last week.

Players signed to a reserve/future contract can be added to an NFL team’s roster when it expands from 53 to 90 players for the offseason on the first day of the NFL’s business year. That takes place on March 17. It ties them to the Browns through that period instead of them being street free agents.

Vikings sign RB Tony Brooks-James to practice squad

On Tuesday, the team released Johnny Stanton to make room for Brooks-James.

After releasing fullback Johnny Stanton from the practice squad on Tuesday, the Vikings filled his spot on Wednesday, signing running back Tony Brooks-James.

Brooks-James, a rookie, was an undrafted free agent out of Oregon. He spent time with Pittsburgh earlier in November. In three games, he rushed eight times for seven yards. Not great.

In four years of college, Brooks-James had 1,863 rushing yards and 392 receiving yards to go with 20 total touchdowns.

Vikings cut WR Josh Doctson, sign LB Cameron Smith

Doctson’s time in Minnesota didn’t have a lot of memories.

The Josh Doctson experiment is over in Minnesota.

On Tuesday, the team announced it had released the receiver who had been active for just one game. He was hurt most of the year with a hamstring injury after the Vikings signed him after he was released by the Washington Redskins.

This likely means that Adam Thielen is ready to return from a hamstring injury for Monday Night Football in Week 13 against the Seahawks.

Taking Doctson’s spot on the roster will be linebacker Cameron Smith. Smith was a fifth-round pick out of USC. He spent time on the active roster and the team’s practice squad. With Ben Gedeon dealing with another concussoin, this is a move that makes sense.

And to fill Smith’s spot on the practice squad, the Vikings have signed fullback Johnny Stanton to the practice squad. Stanton, a former Nebraska quarterback, spent some time with the Vikings this offseason as well.
