John Cominsky makes it clear he wants to return to Detroit in 2023

Cominsky’s caption on his Instagram post basically begged the Lions to bring him back in 2023

John Cominsky quickly proved to be one of the best moves made by the Detroit Lions in the past offseason. Discarded by the Atlanta Falcons after three underwhelming seasons where the Falcons never quite figured out how to use the defensive lineman, the Lions claimed Cominsky off waivers and gave him a shot at redemption.

Mission accomplished. Cominsky proved to be an invaluable member of the Detroit defense. Capable of playing every spot but nose tackle, Cominsky’s hard-driving effort and blend of quickness and power made him the ideal set-up man for rookie Aidan Hutchinson as well as someone who could do strong things on his own.

Now Cominsky is a pending free agent. Even though he can sign anywhere, and perhaps command more money elsewhere, Cominsky made it abundantly clear he wants to be back in Detroit in 2023.

In an Instagram post, Cominsky all but begged the Lions to bring him back for another season. Check Cominsky’s top caption,

Exit meeting 2021-22 season:
“Can I please get released?”
.
Exit meeting 2022-2023 season:
“Can you please bring me back?”

Sure sounds like someone who has no intention of testing the free agent market if the Lions want him back. It reinforces what Cominsky expressed to Justin Rogers of the Detroit News earlier this week. For their part, the Lions have shown strong signs they’re willing to keep Cominsky in the den.

Lions unsung hero: Cominsky proves to be a vital cog in defensive machine

John Cominsky is proving he is everything the Detroit Lions want and need in a player and quietly has become a key defensive cog

It is not very often that Lions fans experience a beatdown where they are not on the receiving end, but that is exactly what the Detroit Lions did. They put together a near-perfect performance from every facet of the game as they dismantled the Jacksonville Jaguars, 40-14, to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The offense was cooking, with Jared Goff slinging the rock proving strong outings from Amon-Ra St. Brown and DJ Chark, with Swift looking like his former dominant self. Michael Badgley was perfect in field goals today, giving the Lions some form of stabilization on that end of the field. The defense had many solid players today, from DeShon Elliott creating turnovers to James Houston doing nothing but sacking quarterbacks left and right.

There is one Lions player that typically falls under the radar because, most of the time, he creates plays for the players around him, from Aidan Hutchinson to Alex Anzalone, who each are having solid seasons. Even though he might have been cast off, he has potentially found a new home in Detroit as he is exactly the type of player the Lions want to have as he embodies the grit, tenacity, and no-quit attitude. The player I am talking about is none other than John Cominsky.

The Atlanta Falcons waived Cominsky in late May, and even though nearly a third of the league put in a claim for the uber-athletic defensive lineman, the Lions were awarded him. He was being looked at as a possible rotational piece on a defensive line that saw the youth injection of Hutchinson and Josh Paschal in the draft and the re-signing of Charles Harris and Romeo Okwara.

Right out of the gate, the acquisition was paying dividends as he led the team in pressures through the first couple of weeks, but that was short-lived as he broke his thumb in Week 2, sidelining him for nearly the following month afterward. He would return in Week 7 with a protection club on his hand, but you could see he was hindering him, as he couldn’t produce the same numbers he put up earlier in the season.

Even though he wasn’t putting up the numbers he did earlier in the season when he returned, he still provided a significant presence along the defensive line that was sorely missed while he was out with his injury. His toughness was on full display, and he wanted to be there for his teammates as it did not go unnoticed by defensive line coach Todd Wash.

“It does limit him a little bit, but that’s just part of the game. He’s a tough S.O.B. by playing through this thing. He probably shouldn’t have played a couple weeks ago, but he’s going to play no matter what and there’s a lot of respect for him there,” Wash said.

It did take a hot second for him to get adjusted back to full gameplay with a limited snap count, but in Week 10, he saw at that time a season-high in snaps and started to look like his usual self. Then in Week 11, he was on full display with another season-high snap count while creating four pressures, a sack, and a pass breakup.

In Week 12, the coaches decided to give the Buffalo Bills a healthy dose of Cominsky as he led the defensive line in snaps (63) and was an absolute havoc in the trenches. He was fully healthy, leading the team with nine pressures, including seven hurries and two QB hits.

From the eye test against the Jaguars, Cominsky continued to off his performance from Week 12 as he made big stops against the run and tipped a ball that he almost picked off himself. Essentially if he wasn’t making the play, he was setting someone else up to make a play and was a key cog in their defensive performance holding the Jaguars to only 14 points.

Cominsky is proving he is an essential piece to the Lions defensive front, and if I were the Lions, I would resign him quickly. He encompasses everything the Lions are trying to do in Detroit and could be someone to push that message forward. The spotlight might be on Hutchinson, but in the shadows, Cominsky is sitting there quietly and has the silent killer to any opposing offense that gets in his way.

Aaron Glenn declares the Lions will have John Cominsky, Josh Paschal for Week 7

Aaron Glenn declares the Lions will have defensive linemen John Cominsky and Josh Paschal for Week 7

Thursday is the day when the Lions coordinators meet with the media instead of head coach Dan Campbell. Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn was quite a bit more forthcoming in what’s going on with his injury-plagued unit than Campbell was a day earlier.

Glenn openly declared that linemen John Cominsky and Josh Paschal will play versus the Dallas Cowboys in Week 7.

“We’ll get some guys back. Cominsky will be back, Paschal will be ready,” Glenn said prior to Thursday’s practice. “Being able to use Aidan (Hutchinson) in other spots, allowing him to have some freedom to do some things also.”

Cominsky has missed the last three games with a wrist injury suffered in the team’s win over Washington. Paschal has been on the PUP list since training camp after undergoing core muscle surgery in late July.

It’s a big boon to the defensive front, which has struggled to generate pressure or contain the run all season. Both Paschal and Cominsky, as well as Hutchinson, can play multiple positions and techniques across the defensive line. Paschal would be making his NFL debut as a second-round rookie from Kentucky.

Paschal is still technically on the PUP list, so the team will need to make a roster move to activate him. The same is true with cornerback Jerry Jacobs, who is also expected to be ready either this week or for Week 8 against Miami.

Lions injury update after the bye week

Here’s the latest on players like Jerry Jacobs, Josh Paschal, Romeo Okwara and more as the Lions prep for the Week 7 trip to Dallas to play the Cowboys.

Now that the Detroit Lions have had some time off with the bye in Week 6, it’s time for a quick update on several of the injured players. Head coach Dan Campbell offered some tidbits on a few Lions who have been battling injuries.

Here’s the latest on players like Jerry Jacobs, Josh Paschal, Romeo Okwara and more as the Lions prep for the Week 7 trip to Dallas to play the Cowboys.

The Lions no longer have the No. 2 waiver claim priority

The NFL doesn’t use last year’s draft order to determine the waiver wire claim order after Week 3

One of the perks of coming off a dismal 3-13-1 season for the Lions was that Detroit held the No. 2 priority spot in the NFL’s waiver claim process. If they put a claim in on a player who was waived, that player came to Detroit unless the Jacksonville Jaguars also claimed him with their No. 1 status.

Detroit snagged DT Benito Jones off waivers from the Dolphins after the initial roster cutdowns this year, but the high claim order really paid off with DL John Cominsky. No fewer than 11 teams put claims in on Cominsky after the Falcons waived him this summer, but the Lions landed him on the basis of having the No. 2 spot.

Now that has changed. The NFL realigns the waiver wire claim order based on records after Week 3. Instead of using last year’s draft order (before trades), it’s now based on 2022 records.

The Lions are in a gaggle of teams grouped at 1-2, but then the strength of schedule in 2022 factors in. Detroit is tied for 14th with the Commanders — who they beat in Week 2 — and the Patriots. If more than one team puts a claim in on a player, it’s decided by a coin flip.

Lions inactive players vs. Vikings in Week 3

The Detroit Lions inactive player list vs the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3 doesn’t include any of the players who were questionable

The Detroit Lions have set their active gameday roster for the Week 3 matchup in Minnesota against the Vikings. Detroit head coach Dan Campbell declared several players inactive for the game.

With two players already ruled out with injuries, it made some of the selections easier. DL John Cominsky (wrist) and LG Jonah Jackson (finger) were declared out with their injuries on Friday.

Of the four players who were listed as questionable, all wound up being active. Getting Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow back in the lineup is a nice boon for the battered interior offensive line. Dan Skipper, elevated from the practice squad on Saturday, will make his second straight start at left guard.

The inactives:

DL John Cominsky

OL Drew Forbes

OL Jonah Jackson

CB Chase Lucas

S Ifeatu Melifonwu

TE James Mitchell

DT Demetrius Taylor

Lions injury report: Ragnow, Oruwariye back at practice but Hutchinson, Swift sidelined

Lions injury report: Frank Ragnow and Amani Oruwariye back at practice on Wednesday but Hutchinson, Swift sidelined

The first Detroit Lions injury report for Week 3 features some expected absences and an unfortunate update on a costly casualty from Sunday’s win over the Washington Commanders.

First, the good news. Center Frank Ragnow practiced on Wednesday. He missed Week 2 with a toe injury and a lingering groin issue. Cornerback Amani Oruwariye was also an active participant. The starting CB missed the win over Washington with a back injury.

Running back D’Andre Swift did not participate in the open portion of practice with his ankle injury. However, head coach Dan Campbell indicated before the session that Swift was doing much better than at this time last week, and also that Swift did work in the team’s walkthrough prior to the formal practice.

Defensive lineman John Cominsky was not at practice, and he will be out for at least a couple of weeks after undergoing surgery on his thumb.

Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson and left guard Jonah Jackson sat out the practice. Hutchinson is dealing with what Campbell called a “Charley horse” suffered in the Week 2 game, while Jackson remains sidelined with a finger injury.

Additionally, TE T.J. Hockenson (hip) and safety Juju Hughes (shoulder) were limited on Wednesday.

John Cominsky will be ‘down a bit’ after thumb surgery

Cominsky injured his thumb in the Week 2 win over the Commanders but will not immediately go on I.R.

The Lions will head to Minnesota for their first road game of the season without one of their most effective defenders from the first two weeks. Head coach Dan Campbell revealed on Wednesday that defensive lineman John Cominsky will be out for some time with a thumb injury suffered in Sunday’s win over the Washington Commanders.

“He’s going to be down for a little bit,” Campbell said of Cominsky. “He had surgery yesterday and he’ll be down for a little while.”

Campbell indicated that Cominsky will not go on injured reserve, at least not immediately. He did offer insight on how the Lions will replace their leader in QB pressures through the first two games.

“We’ve got AB (Austin Bryant) and we could possibly bring up Meech (practice squad rookie DT Demetrius Taylor),” Campbell said. “So we’ve got some options.”

Cominsky posted a picture of his cast on his Instagram story,

3 Lions earn ‘Secret Superstar’ status in Week 2 win over Washington

John Cominsky, Malcolm Rodriguez and dan Skipper all earned spots on Touchdown Wire’s Secret Superstar list for Week 2

The stars came out in Detroit’s 36-27 win over Washington last Sunday. Aidan Hutchinson, Amon-Ra St. Brown, D’Andre Swift and Jared Goff all had great games in Week 2. But the Lions also got great performances from some less-heralded players in the win.

Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire recognizes those sorts of players each week with the “Secret Superstar” honors. And he found three Lions worthy of inclusion in the Week 2 edition of honoring the underappreciated.

[listicle id=81276]

Left guard Dan Skipper, defensive lineman John Cominsky and rookie linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez all made the cut. They’re all smart inclusions.

The segment on Cominksy epitomizes the concept of the Secret Superstar,

Through two games in the new season, he has a sack, a quarterback hit, and eight quarterback hurries. It got lost in rookie Aidan Hutchinson three-sack performance against the Commanders on Sunday, but Cominsky had that sack, and seven total pressures.

The sack was specifically impressive, because as Hutchinson (No. 97) stunted several gaps inside, Cominsky (No. 79) shredded a double-team on the way to Carson Wentz.

Congrats to the Lions trio of underexposed contributors, they all deserve the acclaim.

Secret Superstars for Week 2 of the 2022 NFL season

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar points out the NFL’s great performances by unheralded players in his weekly Secret Superstars team.

There are all kinds of reasons that NFL players are underrated.

Perhaps they’re in systems that don’t best show their skills. Maybe they’re buried on a depth chart. Or, they’re in somebody’s doghouse, and their coaches can’t see their potential. Sometimes, young players haven’t quite put it all together, but there are enough flashes to make you sit up and take notice, and when it does work, it’s all good.

Week 1 of the 2022 regular season features players at every position who showed up and showed out despite their underrated statuses, and here at Touchdown Wire, it’s our job to point them out.

Here are the Secret Superstars for Week 2 of the 2022 NFL season.
