Former Auburn QB finds new home within the ACC

A member of Auburn’s 2018 signing class has committed to his fourth college program.

Remember [autotag]Joey Gatewood[/autotag]?

Gatewood, who signed with Auburn as a quarterback during the 2018 recruiting cycle, has found a new home by committing to the Louisville Cardinals. Louisville is the fourth stop in his college journey, previously playing for Kentucky and UCF in addition to Auburn.

Gatewood signed with Auburn as the No. 36 player in the 2018 ESPN 300 rankings and was the No. 3 quarterback of the class, trailing only former Georgia/Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields and UCLA’s Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

He has been a quarterback for three programs but has not entirely found an identity as a QB1. Between his stops at Auburn, Kentucky, and UCF, Gatewood has passed for just 180 yards on 24-of-51 passes with three touchdowns. As a member of the UCF roster, Gatewood moved to wide receiver for the 2022 season but failed to record any receptions.

It is unclear how head coach Jeff Brohm plans to use Gatewood’s talents, but here is to hoping that Gatewood finds success in Derby City.

Former Auburn quarterback to enter transfer portal, seeking fourth home

The former four-star athlete is on the move again after spending two seasons at UCF.

One of Auburn’s top signees from the 2018 class is on the move again.

After spending two seasons on the Plains, quarterback [autotag]Joey Gatewood[/autotag] elected to get a fresh start by transferring to Kentucky. He saw more playing time at Kentucky, but it was not enough to satisfy his needs. He then reunited with the coach that recruited him, [autotag]Gus Malzahn[/autotag], at UCF. Gatewood saw time at quarterback for the Knights, but would eventually move to receiver. After the position change, Gatewood did not record a stat in 2022.

Gatewood announced Wednesday that he would try to find a new home by entering the transfer portal. His new home will be his fourth since signing with Auburn in 2018.

Gatewood was the No. 2 overall athlete from the class of 2018 and was the No. 12 recruit from the state of Florida. When he signed with Auburn after a two-year commitment in December 2017, he was expected to make an immediate impact. However, he would only see the field in eight total games over a two-year span, throwing just eight passes.

After a disappointing start to his college career, he elected to stay within the SEC by transferring to Kentucky. He completed 17-of-35 passes for 109 yards and an interception during his time on the Bluegrass, but, as the trend would be at the time, wanted to join several Auburn teammates including [autotag]Big Kat Bryant[/autotag] and [autotag]Kobe Hudson[/autotag] by reuniting with Gus Malzahn at UCF in 2021.

Gatewood appeared in 10 games for the Knights in 2021, with his most impressive stat being that he rushed for 142 yards on 28 carries. Malzahn moved Gatewood to receiver for the 2022 season, where he failed to record a stat.

Former Auburn QB Joey Gatewood transfers to UCF

Is the third time the charm for the former Auburn QB?

The former Auburn quarterback Joey Gatewood has transferred to the University of Central Florida on Thursday afternoon.

He reunites with his former head coach Gus Malzahn after playing as a third-string QB in 2018 and as a backup in 2019 at Auburn. He lost the starting job to Bo Nix in fall camp of 2019. Gatewood then transferred to Kentucky after the 2019 season, where he played as a backup in 2020 and lost the starting job to Will Levis this week.

Gatewood was a four-star prospect coming out of high school in 2018. Many Auburn fans thought that he would be the next great quarterback under Gus Malzahn, but unfortunately, fate would not have it, at least at Auburn.

Now Gatewood gets a third chance to prove himself… After current UCF quarterback Dillion Gabriel declares for the NFL draft.

Joey Gatewood has entered the transfer portal again

Oh no… Joey Gatewood is transferring again.

The former Auburn quarterback has entered the transfer portal after losing another battle for a starting quarterback role.

Joey Gatwood transferred to Kentucky from Auburn after losing the battle against Bo Nix. Now, after Kentucky named Will Levis the starting quarterback for the Wildcats.

Both Auburn and Kentucky fans look at the decision and ask the question, “What’s next for the former 4-star quarterback?”.

It looks like if Gatewood would have stayed, he would have had to compete with Beau Allen for the backup spot.

Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops made all of the news official at a Sunday night press conference.

UGA set to face new Kentucky QB in Joey Gatewood

The Georgia Bulldogs will be facing an unfamiliar foe in Kentucky Wildcats quarterback Joey Gatewood, who transferred from Auburn.

The Georgia Bulldogs will be facing an unfamiliar foe in Kentucky Wildcats quarterback Joey Gatewood. Gatewood transferred to the University of Kentucky after playing for the Auburn Tigers in 2019.

Bo Nix beat out Joey Gatewood for the starting quarterback role at Auburn which contributed to Gatewood’s decision to transfer to Kentucky. Gatewood hasn’t started a game in his college career until now. He’ll face the vaunted Georgia Bulldogs defense, which may be the top defense in the SEC.

Gatewood has attempted only 13 passes in his NCAA career. He’s a dual-threat quarterback, who was used as more of a rusher during his time at Auburn. Gatewood has accumulated 40 carries over three seasons and scored five total touchdowns for Auburn during the 2019 season.

Gatewood has a large frame and came into Auburn as a well-regarded four-star recruit. He will face a tough challenge against Georgia, but he’ll be playing behind a stout Wildcat offensive front and will have the benefit of playing at home.

Kentucky’s offense has struggled this year and they haven’t gotten many explosive plays from now injured starting quarterback Terry Wilson. Wilson is a steady player, who rarely throws interceptions, but he’s out for Saturday’s contest against Georgia with a wrist injury.

Will Gatewood make the most of his opportunity against Georgia? The Bulldogs should try to take away Kentucky’s run game and force them into obvious passing situations. The Dawgs can create turnovers if they get Kentucky into third and long.

Stetson Bennett and the Georgia Bulldog offense can help the defense’s cause with a few early touchdowns. If Joey Gatewood is one-dimensional, then the defense will be in for a much more comfortable night.

Joey Gatewood expected to start for Kentucky vs. UGA

The Auburn transfer might make his first career start for Kentucky.

The Joey Gatewood era at Kentucky might begin this weekend.

Per Mark Stoops on the weekly SEC Coaches Teleconference, starting quarterback Terry Wilson is still suffering from an injury. Wilson has missed at least two days of practice so far this week.

It would be a big chance for Gatewood who transferred from Auburn in the middle of last season after getting beat out by Bo Nix for the starting job but it would come against one of the top defenses in the nation. The Bulldogs ranked 20th in the FBS in total defense, allowing just 318.5 yards per game. That number is inflated by the performance put up by Alabama against Georgia. In their first three games, the Dawgs defense allowed just 198.3 total yards per game.

Gatewood has seen some action so far this season including coming into the game last week against Missouri as Wilson was unproductive. The Wildcats threw for just 50 yards in the 20-10 loss.

Out of Jacksonville, the 6-foot-4 Gatewood was a 4-star recruit and the No. 1 athlete in the 2018 signing class, per 247Sports.

SEC commissioner agrees to approve waivers for players transferring within conference

The move gives players like Gatewood two remaining years of eligibility, which is exciting for coaches like Kentucky’s Mark Stoops.

Southeastern Conference commissioner Greg Sankey agreed to approve transfer waiver requests for players who wished to switch programs within the league as of this week.

Sankey originally announced the decision on Wednesday after he said that schools should vote to change the rule that forced transferring players to sit out a year instead of getting a waiver.

Due to the unprecedented circumstances going on surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, moves like this become more warranted.

“It must be stated unequivocally that these approvals are solely a reflection of the unique circumstances present and should not be interpreted as endorsement of the rationale set forth by individuals seeking these waivers,” Sankey said in a statement.

The NCAA has already approved waivers for Kentucky quarterback Joey Gatewood and Tennessee offensive lineman Cade Mays.

The move gives players like Gatewood two remaining years of eligibility, which is exciting for coaches like Kentucky’s Mark Stoops.

“We’re thankful that the SEC Presidents and Commissioner Greg Sankey took into account the unique circumstances around this season.

Report: Joey Gatewood’s eligibility waiver might depend on agreement between Auburn, Kentucky

This is quite an interesting agreement made between Auburn and Kentucky regarding Joey Gatewood’s eligibility.

Kentucky visits Jordan-Hare Stadium to take on Auburn in less than two weeks and former Tiger and current Wildcats quarterback Joey Gatewood’s eligibility is still up in the air.

On Monday, it was reported that it might all stand on an interesting agreement between the two schools.

From Saturday Down South:

Rivals’ Travis Graf is reporting that Gatewood, who transferred from in December, has likely been cleared for immediate eligibility by the NCAA, but the matter is now up to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. Kentucky Sports Radio’s Matt Jones said he has also heard the same.

“I can confirm that report,” Jones said. “That’s what I was hinting at last week. That has been true for a while, that the NCAA (has cleared him) but they’re waiting on the SEC.”

Graf is also reporting that Kentucky has a “gentleman’s agreement” with Auburn that Gatewood will not play on Sept. 26 as a way to show thanks for Auburn’s cooperation with the waiver request. That part was not confirmed but it would be a very interesting turn of events, especially in the SEC, though these teams are not traditional rivals.

Gatewood left the Auburn program in the middle of last season. Prior to the season, he had competed for the starting quarterback position but ultimately lost out to Bo Nix.
