Jadeveon Clowney, Denzel Ward still not back at practice

The Browns were again missing five players, with two names standing out among the rest

The Thursday injury report has dropped for the Cleveland Browns, and they were once again with five players. Defensive end Myles Garrett and tackle Jack Conklin were given days of rest, while the Browns were also without offensive lineman Joe Haeg, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, and cornerback Denzel Ward. Both Clowney and Ward have now missed practices on back-to-back days.

There is reason to think the Browns are giving Clowney time between games to rest an ankle that is still bothering him, but Denzel Ward missing practice again is not a great sign. As Ward continues to navigate the concussion protocol, the optimism of Ward playing Sunday against the New England Patriots is shrinking.

Browns announce Demetric Felton, 7 other inactives vs. Chargers

The Browns have announced eight inactives, including Demetric Felton, against the Los Angeles Chargers

As the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Chargers get set for battle, the list of inactives has dropped. As the Browns announce eight inactives, running back/wide receiver Demetric Felton is among them. After elevating Chester Rogers from the practice squad again this week to return kicks, Felton’s role has been reduced to ashes.

Rogers can be elevated one more time from the practice squad before the Browns have to sign him to the active roster to have him dress on Sundays. One has to wonder if Felton’s roster spot could be on shaky ground in a week or two.

The other inactives listed for today’s game are quarterback Kellen Mond, wide receiver Michael Woods II, safety Richard LeCounte, offensive linemen Joe Haeg and Chris Hubbard, and tight end Miller Forristall.

Browns announce 7 inactives vs. Falcons including Myles Garrett, Jadeveon Clowney

The #Browns will be without three of their starting defensive linemen today against the Falcons.

With gametime less than two hours away, the Cleveland Browns have released their seven inactives for this matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. We knew that Myles Garrett and Taven Bryan would not play, but all-in-all they will be without three of their starting defensive linemen today.

To make up for their laundry list of injuries, the Browns did sign tight end Miller Forristall off of the practice squad, and elevated defensive linemen Roderick Perry and Curtis Weaver off of the practice squad for this matchup.

Here are the seven Browns players who will not suit up as they look to advance to 3-1 on the season.

Cleveland Browns name 7 inactives for game vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Ahead of their matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cleveland Browns have announced seven inactives

As the Cleveland Browns get ready to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, they have named seven inactives who will not suit up. Some injuries, some players who are buried on the depth chart, and one surprise who has played during the first two weeks of the season.

The Browns are certainly in need of a bounce back performance after blowing a two-score lead with under two minutes left on Sunday against the New York Jets. Regardless of that, they have a chance to leave FirstEnergy Stadium with a record of 2-1 by the time the clock strikes zero.

Here are your inactives:

Browns make 4 moves: Confirm two signings, waive two

Two signings were made official to the 53-man roster and two players were waived to make room:

The Cleveland Browns had a busy weekend with moves just becoming official on Monday through the NFL’s official transaction document.

Two moves discussed over the weekend became official as the team signed OL Joe Haeg and TE Jesse James to the 53-man roster. James and Haeg both visited with the team earlier in the week.

Haeg gives the team some depth at tackle with Jack Conklin recovering from his major knee injury last year. James gives the Browns a third tight end behind David Njoku and Harrison Bryant.

Brad Stainbrook of The OBR had the initial report on James’ signing on Friday.

To make room for Haeg and James, Cleveland released OL Drew Forbes and LB Jordan Kunaszyk.

Forbes was the team’s sixth-round draft pick in 2019. He’s only played in three games with the Browns since being drafted.

Kunaszyk was added to the training camp roster late but was an important part of special teams leading to him making the initial 53-man roster.

Both Forbes and Kunaszyk could be brought back on the team’s practice squad if they clear waivers.

Browns sign OL Joe Haeg as Conklin’s availability in question

Haeg visited the team on Friday and now is reportedly signing with the Browns with Conklin’s recovery noted in the report:

While most would say that the Cleveland Browns have a lot of depth on their offensive line, it seems they may not be satisfied. While the team kept 10 of them on their initial 53-man roster, there is room for concern at tackle.

Jack Conklin is trying to return from a major knee injury last year which led his contract to be restructured with concerns about his recovery. Chris Hubbard has been a capable backup but isn’t a long-term starter and missed last year with an injury.

James Hudson III struggled when forced into action as a rookie as well. Blake Hance, who was also forced into starting duties in 2021, was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco 49ers.

The Browns had OL Joe Haeg in for a visit on Friday and today comes word that they will be signing the versatile offensive lineman:

Haeg struggled on a bad offensive line in Pittsburgh last year but the hope is that the zone scheme and coach Bill Callahan can work wonders for him.

It is interesting that the report notes Conklin’s recovery as a potential concern. If he can’t play early in the season, Hubbard and Hudson seemed like likely replacements but Haeg now could join the mix.

We have not seen any corresponding move on the 53-man or whether Haeg is signing to the practice squad instead.

Browns bring OT Joe Haeg in for a visit

Carson Wentz’s college teammate and now former Steeler was in for a visit today. Slightly surprising given the team’s depth on the offensive line:

As we have harped on since the Cleveland Browns initial 53-man roster came out, GM Andrew Berry is continually looking to upgrade the roster. Throughout the year, the Browns will bring players into Berea to either visit with them, have them do a workout and/or have them complete a physical.

Looking to fill the third tight end role on the team, Cleveland had Jesse James in for a workout to see if he would be a good fit.

Friday, it was an offensive tackle that took a visit to Berea. OT Joe Haeg was noted as a visit not a tryout on the NFL’s official transaction list.

Haeg got attention as a college teammate of QB Carson Wentz at North Dakota State. The 6’6″ tackle was drafted in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts. After four season and 35 starts with the Colts, Haeg played one year in Tampa Bay and another in Pittsburgh.

Yesterday, Haeg took a visit with the Las Vegas Raiders but left without a contract offer.

The Browns are quite deep on the offensive line with 10 players on the active roster. It is possible Berry is looking at Haeg to add to the practice squad where Alex Taylor is the only tackle and Brock Hoffman is the only other offensive lineman.

NFL free agency: Best fits for Colts at positions of need in 2021

Best fits for Indy in free agency

In exactly one month, the new league year will officially arrive, and the Indianapolis Colts will enter the free-agent market hoping to address some very serious needs during the 2021 offseason.

With an abundance of salary-cap space—roughly $69 million projected—the Colts can go get any player they want on the market. They won’t necessarily do that with some big extensions coming up, but the Colts will still have the ability to spend if they want to.

When talking about the best fit, it doesn’t always mean the most productive player or the biggest name on the market. The Colts will be looking for free agents who fit their scheme and culture, and that likely means missing out on some of the top names.

With free agency exactly a month away, here are the best fits at each position for the Colts in 2021:

5 free agent OTs the Colts should consider in 2021

OTs the Colts should consider in free agency.

The Indianapolis Colts have big needs to fill this offseason and one of the most important positions they can address in free agency is left tackle.

After the retirement of Anthony Castonzo, the Colts are in a bit of a bind. They could draft one early in the 2021 NFL draft or look to a cheaper option in free agency. It is unlikely they bring in a big name from free agency given the extensions they will need to dish out this offseason.

Going the cheaper route might be more beneficial seeing as the Colts can get away with average left tackle play. Getting a Trent Williams type won’t be feasible with the massive extensions coming up. So we won’t be listing players like Taylor Moton or Russell Okung, who should get consideration in the event the Colts decide to spend.

Here are five offensive tackles the Colts should consider in free agency:

The Buccaneers failed on their big-man TD opportunity by not throwing it to Vita Vea

The Buccaneers could have had a big-man touchdown in the Super Bowl. They just threw it to the wrong big guy.

We all love big-man touchdowns, especially in a Super Bowl, so the miss in the second quarter from Tom Brady to offensive lineman Joe Haeg was quite unfortunate. Bruce Arians was trying to get tricky, and Haeg couldn’t bring it in, and the Chiefs wound up stopping the Bucs at the Kansas City one-yard line on fourth down for a crucial goal-line stand. Bucs score a touchdown there, it’s 14-3, and the Chiefs are in big trouble.

I would like to posit that the failure wasn’t the play itself — the failure was that the Bucs threw it to the wrong guy. Let’s get in the Wayback Machine to November 24, 2019, when Brady was back in Boston, Jameis Winston was still Tampa Bay’s quarterback, and THIS HAPPENED.

I guess we have to blame the Falcons for not picking up the F-Drag responsibility. Not that this was expected, per se.

Actually, the play was historic. Per Pro Football Reference, (via Football Perspective’s Twitter account), no player heavier than  the 347-pound Vea has ever caught a touchdown pass in NFL history.

That’s Ravens Hall of Fame offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden, Bengals four-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Willie Anderson, and ex-Bears defensive tackle William “The Refrigerator” Perry. We would concur with the suspicion regarding Perry’s listed weight, but one must go with what one has.

So, we’ll have to count this as a massive failure of self-scouting. The Bucs had the guy who had done this before in a historical sense, and they should have done it again.
