San Francisco 49ers lose George Kittle, Jimmy Garoppolo to injuries

The San Francisco 49ers have lost Jimmy Garoppolo and George Kittle to injuries for extended periods.

The San Francisco 49ers’ season of woe — whoa? — continues. The Niners are 4-4 after making it to the Super Bowl last season. Plagued by injuries, they now will be without QB Jimmy Garoppolo and TE George Kittle.

A sprained ankle will sideline the starting quarterback for multiple weeks. Nick Mullens will likely get the call for SF when it faces Green Bay on Thursday in Week 9.

The news on George Kittle is worse. The great tight end has suffered a broken bone in his foot and is done for eight weeks.

George Kittle went on ‘First Take’ and perfectly defended Jimmy Garoppolo

It’s not his fault he’s on a good team with really good football players and a great head coach.

Jimmy Garoppolo came just over six minutes away from leading the San Francisco 49ers to a win over the Kansas Chiefs in Super Bowl 54 a few months ago.

He didn’t, of course, as Patrick Mahomes pulled off a great comeback to lead Kansas City to its first ever title, but Jimmy G did come pretty darn close.

The 49ers star QB then had to spend a few weeks of the offseason hearing about Tom Brady rumors and hearing a lot of chatter about how Garoppolo isn’t the guy to lead the 49ers to championships.

George Kittle, who is one of Jimmy G’s favorite targets, is tired of hearing that noise and provided a perfect defense of his QB on Tuesday’s episode of “First Take” on ESPN.

Stephen A. Smith brought up something about how other players on the 49ers come up in his mind before the QB, to which Kittle said:

He said:

“How is that his fault? It’s not his fault he’s on a good team with really good football players and a great head coach. He got us to the Super Bowl, so that’s what I’m saying. It’s not his fault he has Nick Bosa, he has five first-round D-linemen, he has Richard Sherman in the secondary. That’s not his fault. He goes out there and he performs week in, week out. Like I said, leads the league in third-down percentage. He makes throws. He won us two games versus Arizona. He won us the Rams game at the end of the game. He won a shootout with Drew Brees, who, in my opinion, is one of the best quarterbacks to do it. I mean, he shows up every single week.”

That’s Kittle’s quarterback.

WATCH: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s electrifying introduction of Niners, Chiefs

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was in great form as he introduced the Chiefs and Niners.

The Great One was in his best form Sunday, with a spectacular introduction of the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs before their meeting in Super Bowl LIV.

Dwayne “The Rock” had everyone fired up … before kickoff.

Super Bowl 54: 7 bold predictions for the San Francisco 49ers

George Kittle, Jimmy Garoppolo and Emmanuel Sanders will deliver big time for the Niners in Super Bowl LIV.

The San Francisco 49ers are back in the Super Bowl and looking to add another Vince Lombardi Trophy to their case. They are seeking to complete one of the biggest one-season turnaround in NFL history.

Mostert will be game’s leading rusher

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Raheem Mostert is averaging almost seven yards per carry in the postseason. There is no reason to believe any running back other than Mostert will be the running back with the most yardage on the ground in the Super Bowl. He may not keep up this pace but he certainly will lead the running back pack.

WATCH: Jimmy Garoppolo recalls the classy move Patrick Mahomes after injury

Don’t expect any hostility between Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and 49ers QB Jimmy Garappolo just because their teams will battle in Super Bowl 54.

Don’t expect any hostility between Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo just because their teams will battle for the biggest win in football at the Super Bowl Feb. 2.

Thursday, Garoppolo recalled a moment from the 2018 season when Mahomes extended kindness following the teams squaring off in Week 3.

“For him to come out of his way after the game and wish me luck and everything. (He’s) a real class act…,” Garoppolo said. “For him to do something as simple as that. It went a long way.”

During that 2018 game in Kansas City, Garoppolo suffered a torn ACL. The injury ended his first season as the season starter in San Francisco after just a few games. The former Patriots back-up said he didn’t even know that season’s MVP, Mahomes, at the time.

It doesn’t really sound like the pair have kept in touch .. but it’s a nice story from the last time the Super Bowl teams met in a game that mattered (the also played during the 2019 preseason).

Distant replay: Last time 49ers met the Chiefs, Jimmy Garoppolo blew out his knee

The last time the Chiefs and 49ers matched up saw Jimmy Garoppolo tear his left ACL.

The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers are meeting in Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2 at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. Forgive Niners’ QB Jimmy Garoppolo if he wants to erase the last time the teams played from his memory.

The Chiefs were 2-0 and the 49ers were 1-1 when they met at Arrowhead Stadium on Sept. 23, 2018.

With less than six minutes remaining, Garoppolo took off on aa 13-yard run down the sideline. While attempting to elude a Chiefs defender, he planted his left leg and his knee appeared to buckle. The 26-year-old was later carted to the locker room. The next day it was official: Garoppolo, who had signed a $137.5M contract in the offseason, had torn his ACL and was done for the season.

The Chiefs went on to win the game, 38-27. Garoppolo was 20-of-31 for 251 yards and a pair of TDs before the injury.

The Chief went on to a 12-4 season before losing in the Conference championship to the Patriots. The 49ers finished 4-12 and were rewarded with the second overall pick in the NFL Draft, which turned into Joey Bosa.

Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney shines in breakout game

Against the 49er, Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney logged five hits on the QB, a sack and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney finally had the breakout game everyone had been waiting for. Against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 10, Clowney finished the day with five tackles, five hits on the quarterback, a sack and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown – his second defensive score of the year.

Clowney was all over the field Monday night and his recorded statistics don’t accurately reflect all the pressure he put on San Francisco’s offense throughout the contest.

“Golly, what a fantastic football game he played,” coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday afternoon. “He just was unblockable. He just continued to weave his way into the backfield and make plays, the run and the pass. Any plays that he wouldn’t get credit for that he affected were many and all across the board. Pass defense was good last night. Made a lot of plays, had hands on a lot of balls.”

The Seahawks had been short on sacks this season – only recording 15 heading into the Week 10 matchup. With Clowney’s assistance, Seattle was able to log five more against the 49ers as well as 10 total hits on quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Clowney and his teammates have the week off to enjoy the bye before resuming practice next Monday ahead of the Eagles matchup Week 12.
