Distant replay: Last time 49ers met the Chiefs, Jimmy Garoppolo blew out his knee

The last time the Chiefs and 49ers matched up saw Jimmy Garoppolo tear his left ACL.

The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers are meeting in Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2 at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. Forgive Niners’ QB Jimmy Garoppolo if he wants to erase the last time the teams played from his memory.

The Chiefs were 2-0 and the 49ers were 1-1 when they met at Arrowhead Stadium on Sept. 23, 2018.

With less than six minutes remaining, Garoppolo took off on aa 13-yard run down the sideline. While attempting to elude a Chiefs defender, he planted his left leg and his knee appeared to buckle. The 26-year-old was later carted to the locker room. The next day it was official: Garoppolo, who had signed a $137.5M contract in the offseason, had torn his ACL and was done for the season.

The Chiefs went on to win the game, 38-27. Garoppolo was 20-of-31 for 251 yards and a pair of TDs before the injury.

The Chief went on to a 12-4 season before losing in the Conference championship to the Patriots. The 49ers finished 4-12 and were rewarded with the second overall pick in the NFL Draft, which turned into Joey Bosa.
