After spending the first five rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft addressing offensive and defensive needs, Jets general manager Joe Douglas turned his attention to special teams in the sixth round, selecting Texas A&M punter Braden Mann with the 191st pick.

A second-team AP All-American last season, Mann was one of the best punters in the country. In 2018, he won the Ray Guy Award for the best punter in college football. In four years at Texas A&M, Mann averaged 48.9 yards on his punts.

Punter was an area of need for the Jets entering the draft, as Ian Berryman was the only one on the roster. Mann will push Berryman for the starting job in training camp and has a good shot at winning the competition considering New York invested a draft pick in him.

With a new punter now in the fold, Douglas could use Gang Green’s final pick to target a need such as edge rusher or interior offensive line.

Jets select Virginia CB Bryce Hall with 158th pick in 2020 NFL Draft

The Jets selected Virginia cornerback Bryce Hall with the 158th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft on Saturday afternoon.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas turned his attention back to the defensive side of the ball in the fifth round of the draft, selecting Virginia cornerback Bryce Hall with the 158th pick.

Hall’s 2019 season ended prematurely due to a gruesome leg injury suffered while attempting to block a punt, but was one of the best cornerbacks in the ACC in 2018, earning all-conference honors and leading the country in pass deflections with 21. He finished his career at Virginia with 154 tackles, 38 pass breakups, and five interceptions.

Hall had the talent to be a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft but opted to return to Virginia for his senior year. His injury facilitated a fall down draft boards, but as long as he can get back to full strength, the Jets might have landed themselves a steal.

With a new cornerback now in the fold, the Jets can turn their attention to addressing other positions of need, such as EDGE and interior offensive line, with their last two picks.

Jets general manager decided to circle back to the offensive line with his third fourth-round selection, selecting Charlotte offensive tackle Cameron Clark with the 129th pick.

A first-team All-Conference USA selection in 2019, Clark also won team MVP honors at Charlotte in 2017 — a rare accomplishment for an offensive lineman. Clark took over as Charlotte’s starting left tackle as a redshirt freshman and never relinquished the job, starting 12 games in 2018 and 13 last season.

Clark is New York’s second offensive line selection of the draft, joining Louisville offensive tackle and first-round pick Mekhi Becton. With more protection for Sam Darnold now in the bag, the Jets can turn their attention to addressing other positions of need, such as cornerback, EDGE, and interior offensive line.

After landing Le’Veon Bell’s backup with his first pick of the fourth round, Jets general manager Joe Douglas kept the offensive backup trend going with New York’s second fourth-round selection.

With the 125th pick, the Jets selected Florida International quarterback James Morgan. In four years, Morgan passed for 8,654 yards, 65 touchdowns, and 34 interceptions. He began his college career at Bowling Green before transferring to Florida International for his final two seasons.

Morgan was one of the best quarterbacks in Conference USA a year ago, giving the Jets a young backup to mold behind Darnold. David Fales is the incumbent backup, but his status in that position is now up in the air.

With a backup quarterback now in the fold, the Jets can turn their attention to addressing other positions of need, such as cornerback, EDGE, and interior offensive line.

Jets select Florida RB La’Mical Perine with 120th pick in 2020 NFL Draft

Jets general manager Joe Douglas kicked off day three of the draft by landing a player with the potential to become New York’s next starting running back.

With the 120th pick, the Jets selected Florida tailback La’Mical Perine. In four seasons with the Gators, Perine rushed for 2,485 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also caught 72 passes for 674 yards and eight touchdowns.

New York entered the draft thin at running back beyond Bell, making it necessary that Douglas address the position at some point this weekend. Perine is likely to begin the season as Bell’s backup and has the skillset to contribute both running between the tackles and catching passes out of the backfield. The Florida product is more of a bruiser than Bell, making him a nice complement to the veteran starter.

With a backup running back now in the fold, the Jets can turn their attention to addressing other positions of need, such as cornerback, EDGE, and interior offensive line.

2020 NFL Draft: 6 Day 3 targets for the New York Jets

Jets Wire takes a look at six potential targets for the Jets on day three of the draft.

It’s going to be a busy Saturday afternoon for Jets general manager Joe Douglas.

The Jets now have six selections on day three of the draft after trading their final pick of the third round to the New England Patriots in exchange for two fourth-round selections (picks Nos. 125 and 129). New York also holds a pick in the fifth (No. 158), sixth (No. 191) and seventh (No. 211) rounds.

Fortunately for Douglas and the Jets, there is a boatload of talented prospects still on the board. Who should New York focus on in the final day of the draft? Let’s take a look.

Jacob Eason, Washington

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

Seeing a quarterback on this list might come as somewhat of a surprise due to Sam Darnold’s presence, but the Jets are in need of a competent backup.

David Fales might be familiar with Adam Gase’s offense, but that does not mean he is the best option to relieve Darnold in the event of an injury. Eason has a good arm and a high football I.Q., making him an attractive backup quarterback option for New York if it chooses to target one on day three.

Jets trade 101st pick to Patriots for multiple 4th rounders, 2021 selection

The Jets traded their final third-round pick to the Patriots in exchange for multiple fourth-round pickers and a 2021 sixth-round selection.

The Jets and the Patriots are now trading buddies.

New York and New England teamed up for a trade at the end of the third round with the Jets sending the 101st pick to the Patriots in exchange for the 125th and 129th picks. The Jets also received a 2021 sixth-round pick in the deal.

After the two teams went 20 years without making a trade, Joe Douglas has made two trades with New England in the last seven months. In September, the Jets acquired wide receiver Demaryius Thomas in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round selection.

New York now has six picks on day three of the draft. Three of the six picks will come in the fourth round (Nos. 120, 125 and 129), while the others come in the fifth (No. 158), sixth (No. 191) and seventh (No. 211) rounds. With numerous holes still left on the roster, the additional draft capital acquired from New England will allow Douglas to continue to address needs such as cornerback, interior offensive line and running back.

Jets select Florida EDGE Jabari Zuniga with 79th pick in 2020 NFL Draft

The Jets have themselves a new pass rusher.

After addressing offensive tackle by taking Louisville’s Mekhi Becton with the 11th pick on Thursday night, adding a weapon for Sam Darnold to work with in Baylor wide receiver Denzel Mims and netting a versatile defensive back in California’s Ashtyn Davis, Jets general manager Joe Douglas turned his attention to New York’s pass rush. With his second selection of the third round, Douglas took Florida EDGE Jabari Zuniga with the 79th pick.

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smAZ2mAO5kM&w=560&h=315]

Zuniga suffered from the injury bug and frequent misuse throughout his career at Florida. The Gators played Zuniga inside on sub-packages — a head-scratching move considering his prowess for getting to opposing quarterbacks. Although he was thrust into an unfamiliar role, Zuniga made the most of the situation, showcasing his ability and natural pass-rushing gifts when healthy.

Zuniga spent most of last season on the shelf due to a high ankle sprain, only recording 14 tackles and three sacks. His best season came in 2018 with 45 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

As long as he stays off the mend and progresses as expected, Zuniga has a good chance to begin the season starting opposite Jordan Jenkins. With Zuniga and Jenkins, the Jets now have a solid outside linebacker duo for defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to work with.

With Douglas addressing the offensive line, selecting a wide receiver, netting a defensive back and adding an edge rusher, he must now shift his focus to addressing other needs, such as interior offensive line and running back.

The Jets decided to go with a defensive back with some positional versatility for their first pick of the third round.

After addressing offensive tackle by taking Louisville’s Mekhi Becton with the 11th pick on Thursday night and adding a weapon for Sam Darnold to work with in Baylor wide receiver Denzel Mims, Jets general manager Joe Douglas turned his attention to the defensive side of the ball, selecting California’s Ashtyn Davis with the 68th pick.

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLbkU3I04Fw&w=560&h=315]

In four years at California, Davis, who is known for his coverage skills, recorded 166 tackles, 12 pass deflections and seven interceptions. Davis spent his final two seasons of college football playing safety but lined up at cornerback his first two years at Cal. He was also a cornerback recruit coming out of high school.

The Jets are set at safety with Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye, meaning Davis’ future with New York likely lies at cornerback. As long as everything goes as expected with his development this offseason, there is a good chance Davis opens 2020 opposite Pierre Desir as a starting outside corner.

With Douglas addressing the offensive line, selecting a wide receiver and netting a new defensive back, Douglas must now shift his focus to landing a pass rusher. Interior offensive line and running back also remain positions Douglas is likely to target as the draft progresses.

Sam Darnold has himself a new weapon to work with.

After addressing offensive tackle by taking Louisville’s Mekhi Becton with the 11th pick on Thursday night, Jets general manager Joe Douglas traded back 11 picks with the Seattle Seahawks and landed a playmaker on day two of the draft, selecting Baylor wide receiver Denzel Mims with the 59th pick.

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6tDgniWNAk&w=560&h=315]

Originally in possession of the No. 48 pick, New York traded back with Seattle in order to secure itself an additional third-round pick. The Jets now have three third-round selections at Nos. 68, 79 and 101.

In four years at Baylor, Mims caught 186 passes for 2,925 yards and 28 touchdowns. His senior season was his most productive, as he caught 66 passes for 1,020 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Mims is likely to begin the season lining up as a starting receiver opposite Breshad Perriman. With Mims and Perriman on the outside and Jamison Crowder in the slot, the Jets now have themselves a trio of wide receivers that can beat opposing defenses in a variety of ways.

With Douglas addressing the offensive line and adding a wideout for Darnold, his focus must now shift to addressing needs on the defensive side of the ball, such as cornerback and EDGE. Interior offensive line and running back also remain positions Douglas is likely to target as the draft progresses.
