Jets general manager Joe Douglas kicked off day three of the draft by landing a player with the potential to become New York’s next starting running back.

With the 120th pick, the Jets selected Florida tailback La’Mical Perine. In four seasons with the Gators, Perine rushed for 2,485 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also caught 72 passes for 674 yards and eight touchdowns.

New York entered the draft thin at running back beyond Bell, making it necessary that Douglas address the position at some point this weekend. Perine is likely to begin the season as Bell’s backup and has the skillset to contribute both running between the tackles and catching passes out of the backfield. The Florida product is more of a bruiser than Bell, making him a nice complement to the veteran starter.

With a backup running back now in the fold, the Jets can turn their attention to addressing other positions of need, such as cornerback, EDGE, and interior offensive line.
