Where Rockets rank among the greatest nicknames in NBA history

“Hakeem the Dream” and “Clyde the Glide” are among Houston’s best contributions to elite NBA nicknames, but they’re far from alone. Here’s a comprehensive list through Rockets history.

The best sports nicknames are colorful accents that effortlessly add a dash of flavor to the games we watch and play.

Some originate as terms of endearment, while others are bestowed as labels of ineptitude. That got us wondering about where some of the greatest players in basketball history — such as Michael Jordan (Air), LeBron James (King James) and Earvin Johnson (Magic) — rank in the pantheon of great NBA nicknames.

Baseball, with its long and rich history, once generated vivid monikers such as the Sultan of Swat (Babe Ruth) and the Splendid Splinter (Ted Williams). But basketball, with its playground roots and hip-hop culture, arguably is the sport with the most imaginative sports nicknames today.

With that in mind, Thomas Neumann of Rookie Wire took a shot at ranking the 101 greatest nicknames in NBA history. See below for where players with ties to the Houston Rockets were ranked in that list.

All nickname commentary and history is from Neumann.

Jeremy Lin helps Santa Cruz secure win with fifth 20-point game

Lin on Saturday scored 13 in the fourth quarter and overtime to lead the Warriors to a 113-103 victory over the OKC Blue.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — When the Santa Cruz Warriors needed a basket late, the team turned to Jeremy Lin and the nine-year NBA veteran came through in the clutch during the regular-season finale.

Lin scored 13 of his 26 total points in the fourth quarter and overtime to lead the Warriors to a 113-103 victory over the OKC Blue. He shot 9-of-17 from the field, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range, to finish with his fifth 20-point game of the season.

The Warriors finished with an 11-4 record on the season to secure the second seed in the NBA G League playoffs, which are set to begin on Monday.

Santa Cruz, who received a team-high 29 points from Isaiah Reese, led for much of the contest on Saturday and looked poised to close out Oklahoma City in the fourth quarter. However, the Blue finished regulation on a 6-0 run to force overtime.

From there, Lin and Reese took the Warriors home to pull out the victory.

Behind the play of Lin, and several others, including Golden State Warriors assignees Jordan Poole and Nico Mannion, Santa Cruz emerged as one of the top teams in the G League this season. Although Poole and Mannion have since re-joined Golden State, the group is poised to continue its strong run into the postseason.

Notable names to know during the G League bubble season

Top prospects like Jonathan Kuminga and Jalen Green are competing against NBA veterans like Jeremy Lin.

The 2021 NBA G League season, featuring big names like Jonathan Kuminga and Jalen Green, kicked off Wednesday afternoon.

Even before the pandemic, this season was going to look and feel different than any other because it was the debut of the G League Ignite squad. This is the inaugural campaign for the team, an alternative to the NCAA that offers a pathway to the NBA for top prospects.

But this season is also different than normal because, just like the NBA did to finish out the 2019-20 season, the league is playing in a bubble location at the ESPN Wide World of Sport Complex in Florida.

The seventeen teams that opted into playing will have a condensed schedule of fifteen games between Feb. 10-March 6. Single-elimination playoffs begin on March 8 and the NBA G League Finals is on March 11.

Below are some of the most interesting players worth tracking as the games continue over the next few weeks.
