Ohio State once again can’t close on a transfer portal prospect, commits to Alabama

The search for a transfer tight end continues

The Buckeyes have not had much luck with transfer portal prospects this cycle. Two of their offensive line targets ([autotag]Ajani Cornelius[/autotag] and [autotag]Jeremiah Byers[/autotag]) visited but opted to go elsewhere.

[autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] had a chance to change that narrative with Maryland tight end [autotag]CJ Dippre[/autotag], who was choosing between the Buckeyes and Alabama. Unfortunately, this one did not go Ohio State’s way. On Tuesday, Dippre chose the Crimson Tide as his next destination.

This isn’t how Day saw this going. Tight end might not be at the forefront of team needs, but it is on the list.

The Buckeyes will most likely lose [autotag]Cade Stover[/autotag], and there is not much returning depth behind him. It looks like Ohio State is back to searching for another tight end.

Thoughts on Ohio State’s disappointing early signing period results

It might have seemed like this was a bad day, but it wasn’t all bad #GoBucks

We all know how yesterday went, in the short term the Buckeyes looked very much like one of the losers of the day. Not only did they not get a verbal from either of the two 5-star prospects they were finalists for, [autotag]Matayo Uiagalelei [/autotag] or [autotag]Damon Wilson[/autotag], they lost [autotag]Kayin Lee[/autotag] as he flipped to [autotag]Auburn[/autotag].

To make matters worse, defensive back commit [autotag]Jayden Bonsu[/autotag] is still in the air, having tweeted he signed but no indication with who, [autotag]Miami (FL)[/autotag] being the other potential choice. Oh and transfer tackle [autotag]Ajani Cornelius[/autotag] chose Oregon over the Buckeyes as well.

It might have seemed like the sky was falling, but that’s not all that we can take away from the start to the early signing period. Find out what I thought about this disappointment and direction of [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] Football.

(Edit: as of 8:32 a.m. it has been reported by multiple outlets that Bonsu has officially signed with Ohio State)

What transpired with Ohio State’s transfer tackles who visited over the weekend

It’s transfer crunch time

Not only was it the last weekend prior to the early signing period, it was also a big weekend for transfers. Ohio State hosted two offensive tackles, [autotag]Ajani Cornelius[/autotag] and [autotag]Jeremiah Byers[/autotag], in hopes of luring them to play in Columbus next year.

What has transpired since has been interesting, given that there should be plenty of playing time available for a team that is in the College Football Playoff conversation every year, along with being a pipeline to the NFL.

Find out what is next for both Byers and Cornelius as the dead period gets closer and news could get a bit quieter on the transfer front.

Report: Oregon to host UTEP OT Jeremiah Byers on visit this weekend

According to a report from 247Sports, the Ducks will host UTEP OT Jeremiah Byers on a visit this weekend.

The Oregon Ducks are working hard to fill their offensive tackle needs this offseason both through the transfer portal and recruiting cycle, and they’re bringing in one of the top guys for a visit this weekend.

According to a report from 247Sports’ Matt Prehm, University of Texas El Paso offensive tackle Jeremiah Byers will take an official visit to Eugene this weekend after his visit to Ohio State. Byers was a First Team All-Conference USA OT in 2022, starting 12 games for UTEP after playing in 13 games a season ago.

The Ducks hosted Rhode Island OT Ajani Cornelius on a visit last weekend, and are still in the mix with 5-star OT Kadyn Proctor, who is currently committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes and will reportedly be taking a visit to the Alabama Crimson Tide this weekend.

Wherever Oregon ends up going, it is clear that they need to find some starting-caliber players on the OL after losing 4 of their 5 starters from 2022.

Report: Both transfer tackles Ohio State has offered will visit this weekend

Both will be on campus this weekend! #GoBucks

The Buckeyes made quick decisions on who they wanted to target in the transfer portal along the offensive line: Rhode Island’s [autotag]Ajani Cornelius[/autotag] and UTEP’s [autotag]Jeremiah Byers[/autotag].

Both big men were offered scholarships this weekend and [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] along with offensive line coach [autotag]Justin Frye[/autotag] have made a big enough impression with each that they will visit Columbus this weekend according to a report by 247Sports and by Fox’s [autotag]Bruce Feldman[/autotag].

This development is very interesting. On Friday, I postulated that both current starting tackles, [autotag]Paris Johnson Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Dawand Jones[/autotag] could be leaving [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] with eligibility remaining. Day is hedging his bets, which makes a ton of sense as the tackle position is the most important along the offensive line.

This is a nice contrast from what the Buckeyes have done previously with the portal, watching other teams use it to fortify their rosters. Since getting the tackles on campus for a visit is a huge step in their recruitment, expect Ohio State to be contenders for their commitments when each makes his choice.

Another Ohio State offensive tackle transfer offer goes out

The Bucks are looking for OT help in the portal #GoBucks

It seems like [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] is tipping his hand a bit on what his current offensive tackles intentions are after playing in the [autotag]College Football Playoff[/autotag]. Both [autotag]Paris Johnson Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Dawand Jones[/autotag] have eligibility remaining after this year, but the recent action on the transfer trail might signal that Day knows both his starting tackles will be making the jump to the NFL.

Having already offered Rhode Island transfer offensive tackle [autotag]Ajani Cornelius[/autotag] earlier this week, the offer to UTEP tackle [autotag]Jeremiah Byers[/autotag] flew a bit under the radar. The Buckeyes followed offers from schools like [autotag]Penn State[/autotag], [autotag]Florida State[/autotag], [autotag]Oregon[/autotag] and others.

Byers has already visited FSU and has yet to announce if he will be taking other visits at the time of this post. With Day already offering two tackles from the portal, expect at least a few more offers to come from the position, especially if neither of them ultimately visit Columbus.

Oregon extends offer to UTEP transfer OT Jeremiah Byers

The Ducks extended their second offer to an OL in the transfer portal, this time to UTEP OL Jeremiah Byers.

The Oregon Ducks are keeping a close eye on the transfer portal this offseason in search of players who can improve the roster for the 2023 season, and they extended their fifth offer to a collegiate player so far in this cycle.

Former University of Texas El Paso offensive lineman Jeremiah Byers is the latest target for Dan Lanning and the Ducks. Byers is a 6-foot-6, 290-pound OL who played right tackle at UTEP, earning USA All-Freshman Team honors in 2020.

Byers also holds offers from Texas Tech, UTSA, Miami, Maryland, Memphis, Penn State, Oklahoma, and Florida State.

This is the second OL offer that the Ducks have made in the transfer portal this year, with the other going to former Rhode Island OL Ajani Cornelius, who is taking a visit to Eugene this weekend.
