5 bold predictions entering Colts training camp

Here are five bold predictions for the Colts as they enter training camp.

Training camp awaits the Indianapolis Colts, and so do many new possibilities. With a revamped coaching staff and several new pieces from the draft and free agency, the Colts are ready to put it together.

Entering new seasons always brings more hope regardless of how a team may have finished the previous season. The Colts are a prime example of this considering their new additions at head coach and quarterback.

Here are five bold predictions entering Colts training camp:

Ranking the TEs in the AFC South entering the 2023 season.

The AFC South tight ends feature a pair of proven veterans at the position and a couple of second-year players that will be looking to take the next step in 2023.

Taking a look at five under-the-radar Colts to keep an eye on at training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts start training camp next week where temperatures will be hot, but several Colts battles will be hotter. The team needs a spark, and these players could provide a much-needed boost.

With head coach Shane Steichen now leading the team, who will thrive under his leadership?

Colts’ 2023 training camp preview: Tight End

There will be plenty of competition in the tight end room at Colts training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts are set to return for training camp at the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield with their first practice being held July 26.

Before then, we’ll be previewing each position, giving our takes on the starters, position battles and projected depth chart entering camp under the new regime.

There are few positions on the roster that will include more competition than tight end for the Colts. While the order is somewhat clear, the team seemingly has roughly six or seven worthy players vying for a (likely) maximum of four spots.

You can follow along with our training camp previews as we post the links below:

The top 10 Colts players 25 and under

Taking a look at the top Colts who are 25 years or younger during the 2023 season.

The Indianapolis Colts have one of the youngest rosters in the NFL entering the 2023 season.

Through all three phases of the roster, not one player has reached his age-31 season yet. The closest is long-snapper Luke Rhodes, who turns 31 in December.

The youthfulness across the roster is obvious. The Colts brought in 12 new players via the 2023 NFL draft and a handful of others as undrafted free-agent rookies.

For this exercise, we considered players who will be 25 years old or younger throughout the 2023 season. They are ineligible if they turn 26 years old during the season, and we decided to exclude rookies simply because we haven’t seen them on the field yet.

With training camp right around the corner, let’s take a look at the top 10 players on the Colts roster who will be 25 or younger through the 2023 season:

1 Colt from each position to watch at training camp

Keep an eye on these Colts players during training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts officially regroup for the 2023 season down at Grand Park for training camp at the end of July.

With the season looming on the horizon and the team looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2022 showing, eyes will be on the Colts and the different talent, young and old, on the roster.

Here is one player from each position to keep an eye on during training camp and the preseason leading up to the start of the regular season:

Colts’ Jelani Woods ready for breakout campaign?

Jelani Woods seems primed for a bigger role in the Colts offense.

Indianapolis Colts tight end Jelani Woods enters his second season in the NFL coming off a rookie season that included plenty of flashes but not enough opportunities.

The third-round pick from the 2022 NFL draft made some electric plays as a receiving tight end during what was a tumultuous season in the Circle City, and he may just be primed for a breakout.

Beat writers for The Athletic listed their breakout candidates for the teams they cover. For the Colts, James Boyd had the uber-athletic tight end in mind.

Jonathan Taylor was the first player who came to mind, but he’s already proven he’s a star when healthy. Woods, on the other hand, is a true breakout candidate. The second-year tight end was sidelined with a hamstring injury during OTAs and veteran minicamp, so we haven’t seen what he’s capable of in new coach Shane Steichen’s offense. However, Steichen has always made tight ends a focal point, and Woods’ size and speed should make him a perpetual mismatch in the new system. Woods, 24, totaled 25 catches for 312 yards and three touchdowns in 2022.

Woods is a solid choice as a breakout candidate even if the passing attack has some pretty big question marks this season.

Betting on second-year tight ends who are elite athletes is typically a strong move. Woods has the type of size, speed and catch radius that should help rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson improve his accuracy over the middle of the field and in the intermediate areas—which is where he struggled most in college.

Though Mo Alie-Cox currently projects to be the starting Y tight end in Shane Steichen’s offense, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if Woods gave him some serious competition for the role if he has taken the next step in his game.
