Celtics alum Jeff Green on his experience playing with superstars

The 14-season vet reflected on his career on the “Old Man and the 3” podcast recently.

Boston Celtics alumnus Jeff Green has played with quite a few superstars in his time in the league, including Celtics Hall of Famers Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Shaquille O’Neal when he returned to Boston after having been dealt away from the team as they assembled the Celtics’ last contending core under then-team president Danny Ainge.

The Georgetown alumnus has also played with superstars like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and James Harden, finding ways to elevate the game of everyone he has had the honor of suiting up with over the course of his 14-season career thus far.

Uncle Jeff — as he is sometimes called — recently sat down with former NBAer and current podcaster JJ Redick to talk over his storied career in the league on the “Old Man and the 3” podcast.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear about Green’s journey around the NBA so far.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 8

This is every player in Boston’s history who wore the Celtics’ No. 8 jersey for at least one game as of September 2022.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 16 players who wore No. 8 over the years as of September 2022.

On this day: Irving, Finkel trades; Edney, Miles sign; Green re-signs; Kottman born

On this day, the Boston Celtics traded for Kyrie Irving and Hank Finkel, re-signed Jeff Green and former center Harold Kottman was born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team traded fan-favorite All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas to the Cleveland Cavaliers along with forward Jae Crowder, big man Ante Zizic and draft assets for All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving in 2017.

“Kyrie is one of the best scorers in the NBA. He has proven that on the biggest stage, the NBA Finals, the last three years,” said Celtics President Danny Ainge in a press release at the time.

“He’s been an NBA champion, an Olympic gold medalist, and (at that time) a four-time All-Star,” added Ainge. “For all he’s accomplished, we think his best years are ahead of him.”

Thomas’ hip injury would cause him to fail his physical, requiring the addition of more draft assets to complete the trade later in the week. We all know how Irving’s tenure went in Boston, but at the time, the deal made sense, as painful as it was to part ways with Thomas.

Every Boston Celtics player appearance on ‘Shaqtin’a Fool’ since 2011

Watch the clip to see the worst (or at least the funniest) of the Celtics over the last decade and a year.

While it might not be an honor to appear on former Boston Celtics big man Shaquille O’Neal‘s “Shaqtin a Fool” segment on TNT’s “Inside the NBA,” a fair number of Boston players making a guest appearance over the years. The segment, for the uninitiated, is effectively the blooper reel of the dumbest, funniest or weirdest things Shaq and company caught on video that week.

Now, YouTuber and Celtics fan videographer Danielle Hobeika put together an all-time compilation of when Celtics players made the show. The list includes Rajon Rondo, Mikael Pietrus, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Kris Humphries, Vitor Faverani, Kelly Olynyk, Jeff Green, Brandon Bass, Isaiah Thomas, Marcus Smart, Terry Rozier, Al Horford, Gerald Green, Jayson Tatum, Daniel Theis, Kemba Walker, Jaylen Brown, and Glen “Big Baby” Davis.

What are the 5 biggest Celtics trades made during the NBA draft?

The Boston Celtics have made some hugely impactful trades during the NBA draft. Check out the miraculous story behind some of these deals.

The NBA draft is all about roster design. There are a lot of different strategies out there, but let’s stick with what legendary Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach once offered: “They said you have to use your five best players but I found you win with the five who fit together the best.”

With that frame, the draft offers a tantalizing number of opportunities. Sure, you can select the best available player and hope he grows with your system. But fortune favors the bold — the NBA draft is a chance to really swing for the fences and bring in the right player. A smart trade on draft night can change everything.

Boston, unsurprisingly, has a history of moving and shaking far beyond the limited frame of their own specific pick. Following the leadership of Auerbach, the Celtics’ NBA draft trade history is a rich and storied one. As we’ll see, some of the franchise’s best players landed in green by way of a draft-day trade. Let’s discuss.

Report: Boston Celtics active on trade market, interest in Jeff Green, Jalen Smith

What the Celtics might have in mind here remains unclear.

Trade season has arrived in earnest for the 2021-22 NBA season with less than a month left before the 2022 trade deadline arrives on Feb. 10, and with it come rumbles of what the Boston Celtics have been up to on that front.

Hosts of our sister site’s eponymous podcast, HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto and Yossi Gozlan recently broke down the intel they have assembled on what is going down on the trade front around the league in a recent episode of the “HoopsHype” podcast, including an intriguing segment on the Celtics. Boston has reportedly been making calls around the league, with a pair of interesting names on the team’s radar.

The duo also discussed a pair of players reportedly in recent trade talks.

Relive the Brooklyn Nets’ top 10 plays of the 2020-21 season

With a new campaign on the horizon, let’s look back at the Brooklyn Nets’ top 10 plays from last year.

Despite falling short of a championship last year, the Nets did not fall short in putting on a show in almost every game. With all the talent in Brooklyn last season, the team was bound to put together some spectacular highlights. From game winners, to ankle-breakers to posters that you can hang up on your wall, the Nets had it all.

Putting together the top 10 plays must have been a headache with everything that went down last year, but the NBA’s YouTube team pulled it off. Without further adieu, let us take a look at the top 10 plays from the Brooklyn Nets last season.

Report: Nets interested in four-time All-Star Paul Millsap

The Brooklyn Nets and the Golden State Warriors are reportedly targeting 36-year-old veteran Paul Millsap.

The Brooklyn Nets are closing in on completing their roster going into next season. As reported by Mike Singer of the Denver Post, four-time All-Star Paul Millsap is on Brooklyn’s radar. To no surprise, Millsap is a perfect fit on the Nets. His veteran leadership along with his ability to rebound and spread the floor is rare. In essence, getting Millsap would supply many of the things Jeff Green provided for this Nets roster last season.

With the Denver Nuggets last season, the 36-year-old put up 9 PPG along with 4.7 RPG on 48% shooting from the field. From distance, Millsap shot 34%, which is a huge drop-off from his 44% accuracy in the 2019-20 season.

Alongside Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving, his shooting percentage could reach this peak again. In fact, it has the potential to be even higher.

How recent Rockets are faring in the 2021 NBA playoffs

Big names such as James Harden, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Clint Capela, and PJ Tucker have all had their moments in the spotlight.

The Houston Rockets had the league’s worst record in the 2020-21 season, but they still have plenty of ties to the 2021 NBA playoffs.

A crippling wave of injuries, coupled with the forced departure of superstar guard James Harden, led to an abrupt decline for a franchise that entered 2020-21 with the league’s longest streak (eight years) of consecutive playoff berths. Many players who have recently moved on are well-known and disproportionately veterans, since Houston had a clear “win now” emphasis in trying to build a title contender around Harden.

As a result, while the Rockets aren’t in the 2021 playoffs, there has been no shortage of references to the franchise. Star players such as James Harden, Russell Westbrook, and Chris Paul have all held key roles, as have former coaches and executives like Mike D’Antoni and Daryl Morey.

With the 16-team playoff field now down to four in the conference finals for the East and West, here’s a look at how names from the last four Houston rosters (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21) have fared.

Free agency stock watch: Jeff Green, Georges Niang, Torrey Craig and more

The NBA playoffs are nearing the end of the second round and players around the league are beginning to separate the good from the great.

The NBA playoffs are nearing the end of the second round and players around the league are beginning to separate the good from the great.

Under the brightest lights, these games have massive implications for the future value of upcoming free agents. Of course, executives around the league always have tough decisions to make about who they plan to re-sign as well as who they plan to pursue or let walk during free agency. But with postseason play, some of those hard choices are becoming easier to make.

For this exercise, we have also included salary projections from ProFitX, which is a financial and performance index powered by artificial intelligence. Their program models historical and future performance data to monitor and project insights on contracts.

As part of our ongoing series at HoopsHype, we are looking at whose free agency stock has gone up – and down – over the last several games.
