Four-star CB Jaylon Guilbeau re-commits to Texas

A Thanksgiving surprise for Texas fans.

Jaylon Guilbeau gave Texas fans a pleasant Thanksgiving surprise as the Port Arthur product announced he has re-committed to the Horns.

The recruitment of Guilbeau has been a back-and-forth battle.

The four-star corner originally committed to Tom Herman’s staff in Sept. of 2020. Guilbeau remained solid to Texas through the coaching change until ultimately deciding to decommit in July.

Guilbeau committed to Gary Patterson at TCU two months later, but the Texas staff remained in contact. This proved to pay dividends as Patterson is now out at TCU, leading to Guilbeau deciding Texas was the better place for him.

Guilbeau is rated as the No. 24 cornerback in the country and the No. 30 overall prospect in Texas according to 247sports composite rankings.

Texas currently has the No. 7 ranked recruiting class in the country, tops in the Big 12. Landing Guilbeau will hopefully provide some much-needed momentum as Texas looks to close on some other top prospects before early signing day in Dec.

Texas receives crystal ball prediction for former commit Jaylon Guilbeau

Texas received a crystal ball prediction for four-star CB, former commit Jaylon Guilbeau.

Texas has been riding a wave of momentum on the recruiting trail as of late, and they may have some more good news coming their way.

After being the first commitment of Texas’ 2022 class, four-star cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau felt it was in his best interest to decommit from Texas to re-evaluate his options. Outside of the Longhorns, the primary players in his recruitment appeared to be TCU and Texas A&M.

Texas defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach Terry Joseph is listed as Guilbeau’s primary recruiter. It appears to be going well as the Longhorns recently received a crystal ball prediction from Nick Harris.

This would be quite the comeback for the Longhorns in his recruiting cycle, as the day after he decommitted from Texas, there were multiple crystal ball’s entered in favor of Gary Patterson and TCU.

Texas currently hold the No. 3 class in the nation according to 247Sports, and Guilbeau will strengthen the rating immensely as he would be one of Texas’ highest rated commits in the class.

The Longhorns could use depth at the position after this season, as they are likely to lose three cornerbacks in D’Shawn Jamison, Joshua Thompson, and Darrion Dunn.

Four-star CB Jaylon Guilbeau decommits from Texas

On Thursday, Terry Joseph’s first recruiting cycle received negative news. Four-star CB Jaylon Guilbeau announced his decommitment from Texas.

Texas seemed to be trending in a positive direction within its defensive back class over the past week. Four-star cornerback/safety Austin Jordan committed over the weekend, while four-star safety Bryce Anderson is expected to visit on July 30.

Early Thursday morning, Terry Joseph’s first recruiting cycle inevitably received some negative news.

Four-star cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau has announced his decommitment from Texas. He was the longest-tenured Longhorn commit, dating back to the Tom Herman days.

You can read his statement via Twitter here:

I would lke to start off by thanking all of my friends, mentors, coaches, and loved ones. But none of this would be possible without the trust in the Lord.

After careful consideration with my family and countless hours of prayer, I have decided that it is in my interest to reopen my recruitment and decommit from the University of Texas.

Please respoect my decsision. Than you $Hookem coaching staff and fans for everything.

Corinthians 5:7 – For we walk by faith, not by sight

Two in-state schools are surely going to be in hot pursuit of Guilbeau in TCU and Texas A&M. Both were able to host the four-star cornerback on visits during the month of June.

Nick Harris of Horns247 has already put in a crystal ball prediction for Guilbeau to end up a Horned Frog. Anytime Gary Patterson is going after an in-state defensive player, you know he is a good one.

The cornerback could end up being a major miss by Steve Sarkisian and his staff.

On the 247Sports composite, Guilbeau ranks as the No. 152 player and the No. 17 cornerback in the country. Within the state of Texas, the four-star breaks the top 30 prospects at No. 29.

WATCH: Texas commit Jaylon Guilbeau clamps a receiver at Pylon 7on7 nationals

Jaylon Guilbeau’s side of the field is a no fly zone.

While Texas is in the middle of a huge weekend and hoping to obtain more commits after getting pledges on the offensive line from Cole Hutson and Connor Robertson, one of their longtime commits is terrorizing receivers.

Defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau committed to the former staff in September of 2020 and was the first player of the 2022 class. He is a very athletic and savvy corner, who also doubles at as a track star at Memorial High School in Port Arthur, Texas.

Guilbeau and fellow commit Jaydon Blue’s 7-on-7 team, Fast7V7, is playing at the Pylon7on7 Nationals this weekend and both are making huge plays for the team.

Take a look at Guilbeau absolutely shutting down this receiver.

The Longhorns have often referred to themselves as Defensive Back University and Guilbeau certainly seems like he is a player who will be able to carry that tradition, or in the case of last season’s team…resurrect it.

The Longhorns’ defensive backs struggled at times last season as they gave up over 10 yards per pass and gave up on average 266 yards per game through the air.

With the new defensive staff making corrections this season, and players like Guilbeau incoming, the Longhorns should actually be playing like the real DBU soon enough.

Terry Joseph had quite the weekend with defensive backs in town.

Four-star cornerback and current Texas commit Jaylon Guilbeau made his way to Austin for his official visit. The Port Arthur prospect has been on Texas unofficial visits before seeing Texas A&M and TCU.

Arguably, more importantly, four-star safety Bryce Anderson finally got to meet Steve Sarkisian and the staff. No defensive back has been a bigger target for the Longhorns than Anderson. In a classic Texas vs Texas A&M battle, getting the safety to Austin could have been the defining factor in the recruitment.

Both of the top priority defensive backs posed with Steve Sarkisian over the weekend. Anderson and Guilbeau flashed the ‘hook ’em sign,’ while also posing in front of a car in a separate photo:

You can check it out here:

After the official visit, Guilbeau seems locked into his Texas commitment. TCU was reportedly pushing hard for the cornerback but Gary Patterson is not going to get another win over the Longhorns.

As for Anderson, July 4 was supposed to be his commitment date. He thought about pushing it back due to the inability to get to Austin on an official visit. With the trip under his belt, a fireworks show could be in store for Sunday.

Where Texas’ 2022 defensive commits and top targets rank after ESPN’s updated rankings

Four of Texas’ commits in the ’22 class are on defense. Here is where Texas’ defensive commits, top targets are in the latest ESPN300.

Four of Texas’ seven commits in the 2022 class come from the defensive side of the ball. Safety Bryan Allen and cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau will headline the secondary, while defensive tackle Kristopher Ross and linebacker Trevell Johnson are monsters within the front seven.

In ESPN’s latest rankings update, all but Johnson make it into the top 300 prospects. Allen is the highest rated out of the four, coming in at No. 77 and the No. 5 safety in the country.

Plenty of Texas targets are highly ranked as well, highlighted by five-star outside linebacker Harold Perkins and four-star cornerback Denver Harris. These are two guys considered a must for Pete Kwiatkowski’s group in the ’22 class. Their talent is too good to allow outside of Austin.

The early signing is not until December, giving the Longhorns plenty of time to make a few more splashes. With official visits occurring over the month of June, Sarkisian and his staff will have the opportunity to sell the 2022 class on their product in person. Some of the top players in the country have already locked down official visit dates.

Here is where Texas’ defensive commits and top targets rank after the ESPN300 update.
