Where Texas’ 2022 defensive commits and top targets rank after ESPN’s updated rankings

Four of Texas’ commits in the ’22 class are on defense. Here is where Texas’ defensive commits, top targets are in the latest ESPN300.

Four of Texas’ seven commits in the 2022 class come from the defensive side of the ball. Safety Bryan Allen and cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau will headline the secondary, while defensive tackle Kristopher Ross and linebacker Trevell Johnson are monsters within the front seven.

In ESPN’s latest rankings update, all but Johnson make it into the top 300 prospects. Allen is the highest rated out of the four, coming in at No. 77 and the No. 5 safety in the country.

Plenty of Texas targets are highly ranked as well, highlighted by five-star outside linebacker Harold Perkins and four-star cornerback Denver Harris. These are two guys considered a must for Pete Kwiatkowski’s group in the ’22 class. Their talent is too good to allow outside of Austin.

The early signing is not until December, giving the Longhorns plenty of time to make a few more splashes. With official visits occurring over the month of June, Sarkisian and his staff will have the opportunity to sell the 2022 class on their product in person. Some of the top players in the country have already locked down official visit dates.

Four-star defensive tackle Kristopher Ross announces commitment date

Four-star defensive tackle Kristopher Ross, one of Texas’ primary targets in the 2022 class, announced his commitment date.

The hiring of Bo Davis as the defensive line coach has been one of the best staff decisions Steve Sarkisian has made since coming to Austin. Davis has instantly turned around recruiting at the position and gotten the Longhorns in the door at some of the top high schools in the state.

North Shore High School is always a place Davis has recruited well. One of Texas’ top defensive line recruits, Kristopher Ross, is a player Davis has been going after recently. On Wednesday, the four-star defensive tackle announced he will be committing on March 23.

Here is the statement Ross released on Twitter:

With March 23rd being the anniversary of my father’s passing, I’d like to honor his memory by making a lifelong decision he would have been proud of. Therefore that is the day I’ll announce the school of my choice.

Ross recently released a top four list consisting of Baylor, LSU, Oklahoma, and Texas. He initially teased at his commitment coming on Friday but has since moved in back. The Longhorns currently lead on the 247Sports crystal ball and are seen as the favorite to land the defensive tackle.

2022 four-star defensive tackle names top four, teases commitment date

The Oklahoma Sooners offered Kristopher Ross on Feb. 2, the Houston product released his top four schools with OU among them.

The Oklahoma Sooners recently picked up a commitment from Raleek Brown out of Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA), and now the focus could be shifting to the defensive side of the ball. At this point, the only commit on that side is Kobie McKinzie, a linebacker out of Lubbock, Texas.

Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux could be adding to their 2022 class. Four-star defensive tackle out of North Shore in Houston, Texas, has recently released his top four schools. Ross lists fellow Big 12 schools Baylor and Texas along with Oklahoma in his top four. The other notable school being Louisiana State. Ross also hinted that he could be setting a commitment date on Friday, Feb. 19.

Oklahoma offered the defensive tackle on Feb. 2, and have already jumped into the conversation. This could be a huge addition to the class with the big boys in the middle of the defense.
