Michigan State football DB transfer chooses Memphis

MSU transfer defensive back chooses Memphis

Michigan State football lost true freshman defensive back Jaylen Thompson to the transfer portal. Thompson, who loved his time in East Lansing, needed to get closer to home due to family health issues, he was able to achieve that.

Thompson will be moving on to a home state school, committing to Memphis, he announced via X.

In 2024, Thompson was able to play in six games for the Spartans, making a couple of starts and recording 17 tackles.

Freshman safety transferring from Michigan State football

Michigan State losing freshman defensive back to transfer portal

Transfer portal madness continued on Friday, and this time, it is going to affect a young safety for Michigan State.

Jaylen Thompson, a true freshman that received 3 starts in 2024, announced that he will be transferring from the program. He finished with 17 tackles and 1 pass defend in six games. He will carry three years of eligibility with him to his next stop.

Rookie Watch: Safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson should solidify Cardinals’ secondary

Cardinals rookie safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson has the skills to help Jonathan Gannon reinvent his coverage concepts.

Last season, the Cardinals had a secondary without a true deep safety.

Budda Baker played the most snaps at the free safety position with 380 per Pro Football Focus, while Andre Chachere had 198 snaps at the position, and Jalen Thompson had 174. But as Baker is most effective in a roving/hybrid role, Thompson is better nearer the line of scrimmage, and Chachere was a journeyman option more suited to a backup role, Arizona looked to accentuate their deep coverage in the draft.

Jonathan Gannon’s team did so in the person of Texas Tech safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, selected with the 104th overall pick in the fourth round. Last season for the Red Raiders, Taylor-Demerson played 485 snaps at free safety, allowing 20 catches overall on 35 targets for 221 yards, 112 yards after the catch, three touchdowns, four interceptions, four pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 65.0.

Taylor-Demerson is a rangy defender with good ball skills, and he’s pretty astute in the box and the slot as well. His athletic traits allow him to roam just about everywhere in coverage.

When asked after the pick whether Taylor-Demerson had the wherewithal to play deep safety right away for him, Gannon said that was the idea all along.

Absolutely, he’s played safety down there for them. Really his best attributes I’d say are his range and his ball skills. He really has a nose for the football. I think he’s going to be able to play the deep half of the field and then we’ll see what else he can do. Versatility will come after that, but we think he brings a versatile element and range to the back half of the defense.”

Last season, only the Chiefs (67.8% of their defensive snaps) played a higher rate of two-high coverage than the Cardinals at 64.9%. Taylor-Demerson’s addition gives Gannon and his staff a lot more flexibility to throw different things at enemy offenses, up to and including the three-safety looks they often implemented.

3-star Tennessee CB Jaylen Thompson signs with Spartans on Wednesday

Michigan State has tapped into SEC country to snag a three-star cornerback in the 2024 class

Michigan State has tapped into SEC country to snag a three-star cornerback in the 2024 class.

Three-star cornerback Jaylen Thompson made things official on Wednesday by signing his national letter of intent with the Spartans. Thompson was one of 17 Spartans to sign their national letters of intent on the opening day of the early signing period.

Thompson hails from Murfreesboro, Tenn. and ranks as the No. 60 cornerback in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the 2024 class. He is also listed as the No. 762 national prospect and No. 20 player from Tennessee in the class.

Thompson had nearly 20 offers during his recruitment, and picked the Spartans over notable programs such as Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado, Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

Spartans commit, 3-star CB Jaylen Thompson to take official visit to MSU this week

One of Michigan State’s top commits in the 2024 class will be on campus this weekend

One of Michigan State’s top commits in the 2024 class will be on campus this weekend.

Three-star cornerback Jaylen Thompson confirmed he’ll be taking an official visit to Michigan State this upcoming weekend. Thompson, who hails from Murfreesboro, Tenn., has been committed to Michigan State since last December is one of the few that stuck with the Spartans after Mel Tucker was fired.

Thompson ranks as the No. 41 cornerback in 247Sports’ rankings for the 2024 class. He also holds notable offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado, Michigan, Virginia Tech, Missouri, Kentucky, Nebraska, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Oklahoma.

Thompson taking an official visit the weekend before the early signing period opens is a great sign for the Spartans. It surely seems like he is a lock at this point to end up in green and white.

Michigan State football lands commitment from 3-star DB Keshawn Williams

MSU has landed a commitment from a Tennessee 3-star DB who is teammates with a current Spartan commit:

Despite trying times in the Michigan State football program, the Spartans coaching staff was able to pick up a new commitment in the 2024 recruiting class on Wednesday. MSU has gained the commitment of Keshawn Williams, a 6-foot-1, 180 pound defensive back from Tennessee.

Attending Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Williams is the teammate and friend of current Michigan State commit Jaylen Thompson. He holds a mid 3-star ranking from On3, but has yet to be ranked by 247Sports or Rivals.

Michigan State football: 2024 DB class appears to be complete

MSU’s DB coach Harlon Barnett and CB coach Jim Salgado did a very good job with MSU’s DB class in 2024:

Michigan State saw some change in their defensive back coaching this offseason, adding Jim Salgado as cornerbacks coach to assist with Harlon Barnett. With that change came a new spark in defensive back recruiting, along with new prospects showing up on the board, and no matter how you look at it, Salgado and Barnett hit a home run this June.

The Spartans were able to secure commitments from 4 defensive backs, while solidifying the commitment of Tennessee 4-star Jaylen Thompson.

Ultimately, it can be said that the defensive backfield recruiting has been outstanding for MSU and the Spartans may be finished with that position group in 2024.

Check out who the five members are, and who could be added as a 6th member:

Sooners offer Michigan State 2024 4-star CB commit Jaylen Thompson

Oklahoma issues an offer to 2024 four-star Michigan State cornerback commit Jaylen Thompson

Oklahoma’s outlook at the corner position for the 2024 season could very well depend on how things shake out for them this year.

They will likely lose upperclassmen Woodi Washington and Jaden Davis. Behind those two are a bunch of unproven guys that will have every opportunity to showcase themselves this upcoming season.

With two departures at a minimum, Oklahoma would be best served to make sure they hit the recruiting trail hard to find cornerbacks to fit their system.

With that in mind, Oklahoma has already offered over 15 cornerbacks in the class of 2024, and the list continues to grow with an offer to Jaylen Thompson out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee late last week.

Thompson, a four-star Michigan State commit, is over six feet tall and is one of the ten best prospects in Tennessee.

His athleticism and length stand out the most when watching him on film. He also is from the same city as a current OU cornerback, Woodi Washington, which undoubtedly could be used in Oklahoma’s recruiting pitch.
