Sooners advance to Women’s College World Series with 7-1 win over UCF

With four home runs, including two by Grace Lyons, the Oklahoma Sooners advanced to the Women’s College World Series with a 7-1 win vs. UCF.

For the second day, the Sooners opened their Super Regional matchup with UCF with a run in the first inning and then exploded in the middle frames to pick up the win.

With their 7-1 win over the Knights, the Sooners advance to the Women’s College World Series for the sixth straight year and 12th time in program history.

Nicole May pitched seven innings, picking up the complete-game win and the Sooners got four home runs Grace Lyons, who hit two, Jocelyn Alo, and Jana Johns.

Alo’s home run put a perfect stamp on a storied career. In what would be her final at-bat at Marita Hynes Field, the reigning National Player of the Year closed her career at home the way she started it, clearing the Marita Hynes fences.

After rounding the bases, Sooners fans continued standing, offering the OU legend a lengthy ovation. Alo answered the curtain call, waving to Sooner Nation to show her appreciation in her final game at home.

Jocelyn Alo put an exclamation point on a fantastic career in Norman as the Sooners continue their national title pursuit in the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Though the 2022 season has been much about Jocelyn Alo’s last ride with the Sooners, Grace Lyons continues to be the biggest revelation of the year. Her two home runs and four RBIs proved to be the difference in the ball game.

Lyons now has 21 home runs on the season, joining Alo and Tiare Jennings to form the only trio in the nation with 20 or more home runs in 2022. Arkansas is the only other team that can boast multiple players in the 20-homer club.

May’s day started out rocky as she was forced to work around base runners in the early going before settling in to control the UCF lineup while the Sooners’ bats struggled to push runners around to home plate.

May and Hope Trautwein have been clutch for the Oklahoma Sooners since the Big 12 tournament, allowing Patty Gasso to rest Jordy Bahl. As the Sooners get ready for the College World Series, Bahl will have had three weeks of rest to recover from the soreness that’s kept her out.

It’s truly been a team performance for the Sooners who improved to 54-2 on the season and have allowed just three runs in NCAA tournament play, outscoring their opponents 52-3 this postseason. As they await the remainder of the Super Regional results, Oklahoma knows that Big 12 foes Texas and Oklahoma State will be joining them in Oklahoma City. The Longhorns and the Cowgirls are the only teams to get a win over the Sooners, though Oklahoma won the season series against the talented rivals.

Oklahoma Sooners start super regional with dominating performance over UCF

Led by Hope Trautwein’s no-hitter and Jocelyn Alo’s home run and three RBIs, the Oklahoma Sooners continue to prove why they’re the best.

For the 32nd time this season, the Oklahoma Sooners shutout their opponent in their 8-0 win over the University of Central Florida on Friday. Making it look effortless yet again, [autotag]Patty Gasso[/autotag]’s crew won by run-rule victory for the 38th time this season.

Just an absolutely remarkable number.

This team has been dominating opponents for the last two years, but this year seems different and a lot of that is because of the pitching they’ve received in 2022. [autotag]Hope Trautwein[/autotag] had a stellar performance again for Oklahoma. On 77 pitches, Trautwein threw here second no-hitter and Oklahoma’s eighth of the season. She had just three strikeouts on the evening.

The win was her second of the NCAA tournament, which has been key for the Sooners as they try to give true freshman Jordy Bahl an opportunity to rest. Trautwein and Nicole May have been fantastic from the circle in the Sooners four games of the tournament, allowing just two runs in 22 innings pitched.

And that’s a decent UCF offense too, one that’s averaged 5.79 runs per game throughout the season, good for No. 33 in the nation. For reference, Oklahoma State averaged just 5.30 runs per game in 2022. That’s how impressive Trautwein’s performance was on Friday.

On offense, Oklahoma continued their reign of terror on opposing pitchers erupting for another eight runs, led by [autotag]Jayda Coleman[/autotag], who went 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot and scored two runs. Coleman’s been a key part of the Sooners’ offense this season. She’s second on the team in batting average and on-base percentage.

[autotag]Jocelyn Alo[/autotag] hit career home run No. 116, driving in three runs as part of the five-run second inning that broke the game open and put it out of reach for UCF. The performance that Alo’s put on in her career has been exceptional. We’re witnesses to one of the greatest collegiate careers of all time.

Every time they step on the field, this team continues to show why they’ve been the best in the country for the last two seasons.

Oklahoma will look to close out their Super Regional against UCF and move on to the College World Series in their 1 p.m. matchup on Saturday.

5 takeaways from the Oklahoma Sooners 3-0 weekend in the Norman Regional

The Oklahoma Sooners were excellent in their three-game sweep in the Norman regional and here are five takeaways from the weekend.

The Oklahoma Sooners have made a habit of advancing to the super regionals of the NCAA tournament. This will be their 12th straight appearance when they take on the UCF Knights in Norman next weekend.

The Sooners were incredible in their three games against Prairie View A&M and Texas A&M, outscoring their opponents 37-2 in the three games, which included two run-rule victories and two shutouts.

The only blemish to what could have been a perfect weekend was a two-run home run in the sixth inning from Aggies star catcher Haley Lee that brought the game within one. But Hope Trautwein provided little hope after that and kept the Aggies at bay to pick up the win on Saturday.

Marita Hynes Field was rocking once again as the Sooners put on a show all weekend in front of the home crowd. Before setting the stage for the Sooners showdown with UCF, let’s take a look at five takeaways from Oklahoma’s incredible weekend in the Norman regional.

Take a look back at the Oklahoma Sooners’ dominating performance during the Norman Regional.

The Oklahoma Sooners went 3-0 in the Norman Regional, outscoring their opponents 37-2 in the three games. They secured run-rule wins over Prairie View A&M and Texas A&M to bookend the weekend by a combined score of 34-0.

The only game that was close was the narrow 3-2 win over the Aggies on Saturday.

The win 20-0 win over Texas A&M on Sunday put the Sooners into the Super Regionals for the 12th-straight year. They’ll take on the University of Central Florida, who also went 3-0 with wins over Villanova and Michigan (twice) to advance in the NCAA tournament.

The Sooners pitching duo of [autotag]Nicole May[/autotag] and [autotag]Hope Trautwein[/autotag] were fantastic without freshman phenom Jordy Bahl available for the weekend. May and Trautwein pitched 16.1 innings for the Sooners this weekend and went 3-0.

Jocelyn Alo continues to display why she’s the best player in softball as she went 6-for-7 with two home runs and six RBIs over the weekend. Jayda Coleman was phenomenal at the top of the order for Oklahoma. Coleman went 6-for-9 with a home run and five RBIs and also reached base two more times via walk. Tiare Jennings and Alyssa Brito were also fantastic as the Sooners got contributions up and down the lineup all weekend.

Oklahoma Sooners advance to regional final after 3-2 win, face Aggies again on Sunday

The Oklahoma Sooners advanced to the regional final after their 3-2 win over Texas A&M. Will face the Aggies again on Sunday.

It came down to the seventh inning, but the Sooners held on for another win and advanced to the Norman regional final after defeating Texas A&M 3-2.

The Sooners will face the Aggies again in the finale on Sunday after the Aggies won the loser’s bracket, coming back to beat the Minnesota Golden Gophers 10-7 on Saturday evening.

Hope Trautwein pitched a beauty against the Aggies, throwing a complete game. The Aggies only managed three hits all game. Trautwein didn’t walk a single batter, so the Aggies had limited baserunners to work with. However, the Aggies did some damage in the top of the sixth.

Haley Lee hit a two-run homer to bring the Aggies within one, but Trautwein was able to limit the damage. She now sits at 17-1 on the season. Lee’s homer was the second Trautwein has given up all season.

On offense, the Sooners got ahead early in the bottom of the first on a home run courtesy of Jayda Coleman. A double from Grace Lyons brought in Jocelyn Alo to make it 2-0.

Coleman provided what would be the winning run for the Sooners in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Jana Johns led off the inning with a walk, she moved to second on a Riley Boone fielder’s choice. With two outs, Coleman came through in the clutch, driving Johns home with an RBI double.

The Sooners look primed to advance to the super regionals of the NCAA tournament if they can beat the Aggies one more time in the Norman regional on Sunday.
