Sooners fall to No. 5 UCLA, winner take all set to advance to championship

Despite a phenomenal relief outing from Jordy Bahl, the Sooners lost their first game of the NCAA Tournament and will need one more game to clinch a spot in the final

The Sooners find themselves one loss away from elimination after a 7-3 loss to the No. 5 UCLA Bruins in the semifinal. The Sooners and Bruins will play a second game later this afternoon and the winner will move on to the final.

Nicole May’s perfect record is no more. May gave up two home runs and walked three before being pulled with one out in the third inning. Jordy Bahl came in for relief and finished the game.

In her first extended action since being sat down, Bahl looked very good. The only runs scored on Bahl came on a two-run home run by Maya Brady. That last name sounds familiar somehow.

The Sooners trailed UCLA for the entirety of game one. They did respond to UCLA’s big first inning, however. Jayda Coleman got OU on the board to help keep the Sooners in the game and Grace Lyons hit another home run in the fourth to bring the Sooners within two.

It wasn’t enough, however, and the Sooners will now have to play another game later today to try to continue this fantastic season.

The biggest positive here is that Jordy Bahl appears to be back to her usual self. If OU can beat UCLA in game two, she should absolutely start in the final series.

No need to panic, Sooners fans. The Sooners are up big in the early going in the winner-take-all matchup with UCLA.

No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners vs. UCLA Bruins: How to watch, stream, listen, and key players for WCWS

The Oklahoma Sooners continue their journey in the Women’s College World Series against the UCLA Bruins here’s, how you can tune in.

The Women’s College World Series doesn’t get bigger than this. On Monday, two blue blood programs in the world of college softball will meet head to head for the right to go to the WCWS championship.

UCLA, the team with the most national championships all-time (12) will face off with Oklahoma, who has the third most national championships all-time (5).

The Sooners come into the WCWS semi-finals after beating Northwestern and Texas. UCLA dropped their first game of the Women’s College World Series to Texas 7-2 and then bounced back with wins over Northwestern and Florida. In those two wins for the Bruins, they outscored their opponents 14-1.

The Sooners and the Bruins met back in the first week of the season, a 4-1 win for the Oklahoma Sooners. In that pivotal nonconference matchup, Jordy Bahl announced her arrival to the softball world by holding the Bruins to one unearned run on four hits and she struck out 14 batters.

Oklahoma’s offense continues to put up numbers at a ridiculous pace. They’ve outscored opponents 72-7 in the NCAA tournament, averaging 10.28 runs scored per game.

This is an incredible matchup and the stakes are huge. Oklahoma needs one more win to set up an all-Big 12 championship series. UCLA has to beat the Sooners twice to advance and spoil the party.

No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners beat the Texas Longhorns 7-2 advance to WCWS semifinals

Hope Trautwein pitched seven strong innings and Jocelyn Alo and Tiare Jennings hit home runs to lead Oklahoma in their 7-2 win over the Texas Longhorns on Saturday.

For the sixth straight season, the Oklahoma Sooners are moving on to the Women’s College World Series semifinals after a 7-2 win over the Texas Longhorns.

[autotag]Hope Trautwein[/autotag] pitched a complete game and the Sooners used a fifth-inning explosion to distance themselves from their Red River rivals.

Oklahoma didn’t waste any time getting out in front of Texas on Saturday. [autotag]Jayda Coleman[/autotag] jumped all over [autotag]Hailey Dolcini[/autotag] for a lead off double and [autotag]Jocelyn Alo[/autotag] brought her in with her 30th home run of the season to make it a 2-0 game. Alo is the only player in NCAA history with three seasons of 30 home runs.

Trautwein would allow a run in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1 and then both Trautwein and Dolcini would settle in for a pitcher’s duel for the next several innings.

And then the inevitable Oklahoma offensive onslaught came.

With the Sooners ahead 2-1 heading into the top of the fifth, [autotag]Rylie Boone[/autotag] got things started for Oklahoma as she did on Thursday against Northwestern. Boone’s bunt single got the Sooners going and then Jana Johns joined in on the small ball fun with a sacrifice bunt of her own to put Boone in scoring position.

Jayda Coleman came through with a one-out double to continue her incredible NCAA tournament showing to make it 3-1. Jocelyn Alo drove in Coleman with a hit up the middle to make it 4-1.

After a pitching change, [autotag]Tiare Jennings[/autotag] welcomed Sophia Simpson to the circle by blasting the first pitch into the stands for her second home run in the Women’s College World Series. That made it a 6-1 game and with the way Trautwein’s pitched this year, it was all but academic.

[autotag]Alyssa Brito[/autotag] finished off the scoring with an RBI to make it 7-1 before Texas added a final run in the seventh off of Janae Jefferson’s solo shot for the final score of 7-2.

Though she allowed two runs in the game, Trautwein was much more in control in this game. She only allowed two walks on Saturday after giving Northwestern five free passes on Thursday.

At 2-0 in the Women’s College World Series, the Oklahoma Sooners are one win away from advancing to the championship series for the third straight season. They’ll play the winner of Sunday’s matchup between UCLA and Florida, who will have the unenviable task of having to beat the Sooners twice to advance to the series championship.

The Oklahoma Sooners continue their journey in the Women’s College World Series against Texas Longhorns here’s how you can tune in.

The Oklahoma Sooners get a chance at redemption in the winner’s bracket of the Women’s College World Series. Their next matchup against the Texas Longhorns provides an opportunity for the Sooners to play the team that handed OU their first loss of the season a few months back.

Though it’s just another game, a game against a rival that beat you earlier in the season will carry some extra weight.

In that mid-April loss, Jordy Bahl was outdueled by Hailey Dolcini in the Longhorns’ 4-2 win to snap Oklahoma’s record-setting winning streak to start the 2022 season.

In that loss, Tiare Jennings, Jocelyn Alo, and Grace Lyons combined to go 0-9 with two strikeouts. The Sooners’ only two hits in the game came in the seventh with Oklahoma trailing 4-0. Jayda Coleman singled and Kinzie Hansen homered to cut the lead to 4-2. Dolcini bounced back and shut the Sooners’ rally down before it could really get going.

But that was nearly two months ago and the Sooners are playing great since the start of the NCAA tournament. Women on a mission, the Sooners have outscored opponents 65-5 since the start of the tournament.

As they look to stay unbeaten in the postseason, they’ll have to beat a Texas team that comes in with the confidence that they can beat Oklahoma, cause they did it earlier this year.

The Oklahoma Sooners might have been held in check for the first couple of innings, but when Rylie Boone doubled off the right field wall to lead off the third, the floodgates opened.

Oklahoma scored six in the third and seven in the fourth to collect their 39th run-rule win of the season and according to Soonerssports.com, it was just the second time in a Women’s College World Series game that a team had hit two grand slams in a game.

Tiare Jennings and Jana Johns’ grand slams powered Oklahoma to a blowout win against the Big 10 champion and with a pitcher who was one of the best in softball in 2022.

No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners vs. No. 10 Northwestern: How to watch, stream, listen, and key players for WCWS

The Oklahoma Sooners open up the Women’s College World Series against No. 10 Northwestern on Thursday, here’s how you can tune in.

Despite being the No. 1 team in the country, the Oklahoma Sooners won’t get the opportunity to ease into the Women’s College World Series as they get set to take on No. 10 Northwestern (the No. 9 seed in the tournament), who outlasted Arizona State on Sunday night to win their Super Regional matchup.

Northwestern brings to Oklahoma City one of the best pitchers in the country in Danielle Williams who’s gone 31-4 this season with a 1.86 ERA. She’s struckout 323 batters in 241 innings pitched for the Wildcats and was a top 10 finalist for National Player of the Year.

The Wildcats lineup also boasts five players hitting better than .300 on the year, led by Rachel Lewis. Lewis has 22 home runs, 61 RBIs, and 26 stolen bases on the season.

Looking to repeat as national champions, the Oklahoma Sooners boast an incredible lineup of their own with nine players hitting better than .300 and three players hitting better than .400 on the season. The Sooners also boast a ton of power with Jocelyn Aloa, Tiare Jennings, and Grace Lyons each surpassing the 20-homer mark in 2022.

Alo is on the verge of her third 30 home run season and has a chance to leave the all-time home run record at more than 120 for her career.

The big question facing the Sooners is the status of Jordy Bahl. Bahl has been held out for the last several weeks as she recovers from what was described as soreness. Everything’s gone right for Oklahoma Sooners since the start of the NCAA tournament. With their 7-1 win over the UCF Golden Knights, the Sooners clinched their sixth-straight appearance to the Women’s College World Series and their 12th overall.

They’ve outscored opponents 52-3 in five games.

On Saturday afternoon in a packed Marita Hynes Field, the Sooners were once again phenomenal. [autotag]Nicole May[/autotag] threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out four. She only allowed five baserunners all game and continued to reward Patty Gasso’s faith in the Sooners’ pitching staff minus Jordy Bahl.

[autotag]Jocelyn Alo[/autotag] closed out her final appearance at Martia Hynes field in the same way she made her first home plate appearance in Norman; with a dinger. The reigning, defending National Player of the Year (in Bruce Buffer of the UFC voice), hit the 116th home run of her illustrious career and the 29th of the season.

Not to be outdone, [autotag]Grace Lyons[/autotag] joined the 20-homer club, mashing two homers and picking up four RBIs, which would ultimately be the difference in the game.

At this point, the Sooners will be joined by Arizona, Texas, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, and Oregon State. Those six await the winner of the Duke vs. UCLA Super Regional. Heading into their matchup on Saturday night, UCLA holds a 1-0 series lead. The other Super Regional still to be decided features Florida and Virginia Tech.

Florida is the only team remaining from the SEC with a chance to make the Women’s College World Series after the other eight teams to qualify for the NCAA tournament have been eliminated. The Gators and the Hokies are tied at one game a piece with the deciding game to come on Sunday.

But as the Super Regionals wrap up and give way to the Women’s College World Series, let’s take a look back at the Sooners dominant victory over UCF through these fantastic still photos.

Sooners advance to Women’s College World Series with 7-1 win over UCF

With four home runs, including two by Grace Lyons, the Oklahoma Sooners advanced to the Women’s College World Series with a 7-1 win vs. UCF.

For the second day, the Sooners opened their Super Regional matchup with UCF with a run in the first inning and then exploded in the middle frames to pick up the win.

With their 7-1 win over the Knights, the Sooners advance to the Women’s College World Series for the sixth straight year and 12th time in program history.

Nicole May pitched seven innings, picking up the complete-game win and the Sooners got four home runs Grace Lyons, who hit two, Jocelyn Alo, and Jana Johns.

Alo’s home run put a perfect stamp on a storied career. In what would be her final at-bat at Marita Hynes Field, the reigning National Player of the Year closed her career at home the way she started it, clearing the Marita Hynes fences.

After rounding the bases, Sooners fans continued standing, offering the OU legend a lengthy ovation. Alo answered the curtain call, waving to Sooner Nation to show her appreciation in her final game at home.

Jocelyn Alo put an exclamation point on a fantastic career in Norman as the Sooners continue their national title pursuit in the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Though the 2022 season has been much about Jocelyn Alo’s last ride with the Sooners, Grace Lyons continues to be the biggest revelation of the year. Her two home runs and four RBIs proved to be the difference in the ball game.

Lyons now has 21 home runs on the season, joining Alo and Tiare Jennings to form the only trio in the nation with 20 or more home runs in 2022. Arkansas is the only other team that can boast multiple players in the 20-homer club.

May’s day started out rocky as she was forced to work around base runners in the early going before settling in to control the UCF lineup while the Sooners’ bats struggled to push runners around to home plate.

May and Hope Trautwein have been clutch for the Oklahoma Sooners since the Big 12 tournament, allowing Patty Gasso to rest Jordy Bahl. As the Sooners get ready for the College World Series, Bahl will have had three weeks of rest to recover from the soreness that’s kept her out.

It’s truly been a team performance for the Sooners who improved to 54-2 on the season and have allowed just three runs in NCAA tournament play, outscoring their opponents 52-3 this postseason. As they await the remainder of the Super Regional results, Oklahoma knows that Big 12 foes Texas and Oklahoma State will be joining them in Oklahoma City. The Longhorns and the Cowgirls are the only teams to get a win over the Sooners, though Oklahoma won the season series against the talented rivals.
