Former USC QB Jaxson Dart named Davey O’Brien candidate, hopes to finish 2023 with a flourish

It’s the home stretch for Dart, a final chance to make a big impression at Ole Miss.

Ole Miss Rebels quarterback and former USC Trojan Jaxson Dart was named as one of the 35 quarterbacks on the Davey O’Brien Class of 2023 on Tuesday by the Davey O’Brien Foundation.

Every quarterback included in the class is officially a candidate to receive the 2023 Davey O’Brien Trophy, which is awarded annually to the No. 1 quarterback in the nation, and is the oldest and most prestigious quarterback award in college football.

The Utah native and former Gatorade National Player of The Year has thrown for 2,080 yards, 14 touchdowns, and four interceptions through eight games, with a 7-1 record this season. Dart has also rushed for 326 yards and seven touchdowns on 85 carries leading the Rebs to a No.10 overall ranking.

Dart is leading an Ole Miss offense that currently ranks third in the SEC in both scoring (38.9 points per game) and total offense (474 yards per game).

Dart, along with current USC quarterback Caleb Williams, has also landed on the watch lists for the Maxwell, Manning and Johnny Unitas Awards. Dart hopes for a big game against Texas A&M on Saturday, November 4.

Lane Kiffin and Jaxson Dart will try to make LSU win a springboard at Ole Miss

Lane Kiffin and Jaxson Dart needed a reason to believe they can achieve big at Ole Miss. The LSU win gave them that source of hope.

Lane Kiffin and Jaxson Dart finally got a signature win in 2023. Ole Miss won the Magnolia Bowl Saturday night in wild fashion, prevailing 55-49 over LSU at home.

Dart completed 26-of-39 passes for 389 yards to go with four touchdowns. On the ground, he added 50 more yards on seven carries and a score, outdueling LSU’s Jayden Daniels.

Both teams combined for 1,343 yards of total offense, 14 touchdowns, two late lead changes, and strong individual performances from both quarterbacks.

This win could not have come at a better time for Kiffin and Dart. The Rebels were coming off a deflating loss at Alabama last week. It seems Kiffin is either on the hot seat or looking for another job every week according to some pundits, so shutting them up is important.

The Rebels were rewarded for their victory in both polls, ascending to No. 16 in the AP Poll and No. 15 in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

The Rebels host Arkansas to complete a two-game homestand on Saturday.

College football’s top performers in the SEC during Week 5

From ranked upsets in Kentucky and Mississippi to an unexpected slugfest in Auburn, who stood out in the SEC this weekend?

Any preconceived notions about SEC power rankings probably didn’t survive Week 5, with surprisingly tight battles and a few eyebrow-raising upsets.

No. 1 Georgia couldn’t separate from Auburn, taking a tie game deep into the fourth quarter before emerging with a 27-20 victory. Kentucky trampled a ranked Florida team for their fourth win over the Gators in six years. Ole Miss handed LSU their second loss of the season, earning one of the biggest statement wins of the Lane Kiffin era and jumping up to No. 15 in the newest US LBM Coaches Poll.

In a week of upsets, which players stood out and helped lift their teams to victory? Here are the conference’s best of the best from Week 5.

Alabama vs. Ole Miss: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for Saturday

How to watch Alabama football take on Ole Miss on Saturday, Sept. 23

[autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama football team will look to silence the critics in its 2023 SEC opener against Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday afternoon from inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The offensive struggles for Alabama have many fans and analysts concerned that Coach Saban and the Tide have lost their edge and the dynasty could soon come crumbling down. Put all that together and Saturday’s matchup is a pivotal moment for the Alabama program. If the issues aren’t resolved now, it may be too late.

So you don’t miss any of the action from Tuscaloosa, here is everything you need to know to watch No. 13 Alabama take on No. 15 Ole Miss.

Former USC QB Jaxson Dart takes a forward step in Ole Miss win at Tulane

Ole Miss has a few high-profile transfer QBs. Dart clearly leads the pack after this game.

Former USC Trojan Jaxson Dart is trying to catapult his career to a higher plane. The Ole Miss quarterback accounted for 308 yards and passed for two touchdowns on Saturday, as No. 20 Ole Miss pulled away to beat No. 24 Tulane 37-20. This game could improve his confidence this season.

Third-year sophomore Kai Horton was the surprise starter for Tulane. Horton made his second career start in Michael Pratt’s place with a knee injury. Pratt was a surprising scratch just before kickoff. Horton completed 15 of 37 passes for 231 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Former USC head coach Lane Kiffin, now at Ole Miss, moved up a few spots in the polls after a solid road victory over a good Tulane team which beat USC in the Cotton Bowl last January.

The Rebels will take on Georgia Tech (1-1) at home next week in a trap game.

It is safe to say that Jaxson Dart is clearly the starter at Ole Miss over transfers Spencer Sanders and Walker Howard this season. That debate has been put to bed.

Potential 2024 NFL Draft prospect Jaxson Dart notes mental health as part of progression as a pure passer

Crissy Froyd spoke with Lane Kiffin and Jaxson Dart on the Ole Miss QB on Saturday.

There’s a lot of things that factor into putting together an NFL scouting report on a draft prospect, and a lot of that comes down to what a quarterback shows on the field from a tangibles perspective.

But the intangibles are just as important, if not more important than that. And when it comes to mental processing ability, it begins to cross over. That’s something Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart noted when I asked him about what’s gone into his progression.

Particularly from a pure passing perspective, he noted mental health, something that has been made a priority within the Ole Miss program.

“I think that stuff, you can always improve on. I’m sure you guys have seen it, we’ve been very diligent in mental health,” he said. “I am able to meet with people and I haven’t really seen that in the past. That’s been able to bring my game up a lot from the mental side of it. It shows in the film too.”

A lot of it just comes down to settling down within the offense. The team has a lot of new faces and some coaching staff changes, something that adds to the curve that was already there.

Dart was also projected early on to become a Heisman Trophy candidate after very little in-game experience, something that some may view as a little unfair in regard to loft expectations for a quarterback still learning the ropes.

“I think a big part of it is it just being Year 2,” he said. “Fans and all that stuff, some people don’t really understand what it takes to get engulfed into a new offense… it just takes time and I kind of alluded to this previously about my confidence. The more reps I’ve gotten… the game just slows down.”

Indeed the game did slow down for Dart, who showed just how potent he could the through the air when given the right opportunities and also reminded people of just how dangerous he could be with his legs.

He finished out the 37-20 win over Tulane completing 17-of-27 passes for 267 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception to go with 41 rushing yards, not something that necessarily reflects the way he gave the Green Wave some issues with his wheels.

Head Coach Lane Kiffin seemed satisfied with the way Dart played, while there are still areas to work on. And in the nature of playing quarterbacks and coaching them, there always are.

Kiffin praised Dart for not “perfect” play but play that was tough and physical despite him “trying too hard” at some points.

“He’s done a great job, had really good offseason,” Kiffin said. “I wouldn’t have guessed the numbers were going to look like they did today, but it happens. It’s football. Tulane is a really good team and made some plays and he lost (Tre Harris) early and we just kind of miscommunicated on some things and kind of stumbled out of a break on a pick but he made a great play on the touchdown to (Michael) Trigg.”

Ranked by some as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation ahead of the 2023 season, Dart has shown some bright spots and is growing incredibly fast off of the foundation he set to potentially live up to that.

As the schedule gets tougher, starting with an upcoming matchup against the LSU Tigers, he’ll have plenty of chances to prove just how much he truly brings to the table at the highest stage college football has to offer.

Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss puts up huge numbers in 2023 season opener

The former USC QB was smooth in his season opener, but that was a cupcake game. We’ll learn a lot more on Sept. 9 vs Tulane.

Former USC Trojan quarterback Jaxson Dart threw for 334 yards and four touchdowns, and No. 22 Ole Miss routed FCS visitor Mercer 73-7 in the Rebels’ season opener Saturday in Oxford, Miss.

Tre Harris, in his first game at Ole Miss, set a single-game program record with four receiving touchdowns. The Louisiana Tech transfer finished with six catches and 133 yards. He formed a very potent and effective tandem with Dart, who looked comfortable in the first game of a prove-it season for himself and the Rebels.

Ole Miss (1-0) racked up 667 yards of total offense and scored on all but two possessions.

Mercer (1-1), ranked No. 22 in the AFCA poll of FCS schools, scored on its first offensive snap, a 75-yard run by quarterback Carter Peevy. The Bears finished with 237 yards of total offense, including 138 from Peevy on 16 of 29 passing.

Jaxson Dart is a Utah native and a former National Gatorade Player of The Year. Dart has his work cut out for him next week in a tough matchup.

The No. 22 Rebels visit No. 24 Tulane on Sept. 9 in a nonconference top-25 headliner. We will know more about Dart and Ole Miss after this coming weekend.

Check out our Pac-12 football predictions roundtable for the 2023 season.

Could former Trojan Jaxson Dart be top-3 QB in 2024 NFL draft class?

Caleb Williams is No. 1. Drake Maye is No. 2. Who’s the third-best QB in next year’s draft class?

The 2024 NFL draft should elevate USC’s Caleb Williams to the No. 1 overall pick. Since we know who QB1 and QB2 will be in next year’s draft (Caleb Williams and North Carolina’s Drake Maye), the next big discussion  point in the draft is the attempt to identify the next “QB riser” behind the consensus top two.

In recent years we have seen Anthony Richardson, Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, and perhaps most notably Joe Burrow rise up the ranks with incredible final seasons on campus.

Who could join them this year? Enter former USC Trojan and current Ole Miss signal-caller Jaxson Dart as one option.

Michael Pratt at Tulane, Quinn Ewers at Texas, Michael Penix at Washington, and Bo Nix at Oregon are all viable options, but Jaxson Dart is a name to remember as the third-best quarterback on the board.

His time at USC was short-lived. Dart played portions of one season at USC in 2021 and made three starts. The coaching hire of Lincoln Riley and the looming arrival of Caleb Williams prompted a transfer for 2022. Dart left to link up with former USC head coach Lane Kiffin in Oxford with the Rebels.

Dart completed 226 of 362 passes at Ole Miss for 2,974 yards and 20 touchdowns with 11 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 143.6. He also rushed 128 times for 614 yards and another score last season but hopes to improve. Dart and Ole Miss struggled with four losses down the stretch last season.

At the Manning Passing Academy, former Rebel quarterback Eli Manning said he thought Jaxson Dart “did a great job” in 2022, that he’s “rooting for him” and looking forward to how he can grow in the season to come.

“He’s getting better each game, had some big games, had some tough games and you learn from it. That’s part of playing college football,” Manning said. “He hasn’t played a ton of football, so we’re gonna go through his experiences. Seems like he had a great spring camp and really kind of elevated his play. So excited for him.”

I am intrigued by the potential of this 2024 quarterback class with the top signal-callers mentioned above, along with Joe Milton, Riley Leonard, Spencer Rattler, and Tyler Shough. This class has tons to offer and is an upgrade from the 2023 class.

Ranking Alabama’s 2023 opposing quarterbacks

Ranking Alabama’s opposing quarterbacks for the 2023 season!

Even though the 2023 college football season seems like a long way away, in reality, we are only a little over 100 days away until [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide host Middle Tennessee State on Sept. 2.

With the offseason in full swing, it is time to shift our focus to some 2023 season projections. Depth charts and the transfer portal will likely dominate the headlines from now until August when fall camp arrives.

As we look ahead to Alabama’s 2023 schedule, I think it is important to know the opponents. One of the most important aspects of each opponent to learn is the starting quarterback. So I thought this was a good time to rank Alabama’s opposing quarterbacks from best to worst.

Let’s roll!

Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart: ‘I see myself as the starter’

Spencer Sanders and Walker Howard are formidable contenders, but Jaxson Dart thinks he can beat them both at Ole Miss.

In 2022, former Trojan quarterback Jaxson Dart played for former USC head coach Lane Kiffin with the Ole Miss Rebels. Dart completed 226 of 362 passes at Ole Miss for 2,974 yards and 20 touchdowns with 11 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 143.6. He also rushed 128 times for 614 yards and another score.

Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin and his staff brought in two talented options under center this offseason: former Oklahoma State veteran Spencer Sanders and former four-star LSU freshman Walker Howard.

(Sanders) is a four-year starter and a first-team All-Big 12 selection. He is expected to dethrone Dart as the QB1, but Dart hasn’t given up in his battle to retain the starting job.

Don’t count out Howard, who played his first season at LSU and transferred to Ole Miss in January. He is going through spring drills. Howard has four years of eligibility remaining.

Dart could have transferred out of Oxford to avoid a battle with two other legitimate contenders for the starting job. Instead, Dart wants to play for Kiffin and succeed as the Rebels’ main man.

“To be honest, I see myself as the starter,” Dart said “I had Year 1 and I kind of established myself. Now I have Year 2 and I’m getting more bonds with the guys on the team and being a leader. I feel like I’ve taken ownership of that and I’m just ready to do my job and I’m loving where I’m at right now. I expect myself to have a great spring and keep performing like I’m performing.”
