Georgia DB on Florida rivalry: ‘This is old-fashioned hate’

UGA football defensive back Javon Bullard describes the Georgia-Florida rivalry

Georgia Bulldogs junior defensive back Javon Bullard knows what it is like to play in a rivalry game. Georgia has a lot of rivalries. Bullard is one of Georgia’s defensive tone setters.

Georgia leads the all-time series 55-44-2 against Florida. The Florida-Georgia game is nicknamed as the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party and is typically played annually at a neutral site in Jacksonville, Florida.

Georgia and Florida remain rivals year-round with the winner of the Florida-Georgia game earning bragging rights until next October. Both fan bases love to see their rival lose or fail.

Javon Bullard describes the Georgia-Florida rivalry with a similar nickname of the Georgia-Georgia Tech rivalry, which is known as Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate. The Georgia-Georgia Tech rivalry has been pretty one-sided in recent memory. Contrarily, the Georgia-Florida rivalry has seen a lot swings in the balance of power in the past couple decades.

This is old-fashioned hate. Georgia vs. Florida is one of the biggest rivalries ever. It was that way before I got here, and it’s going to continue to be that way after I leave. If this game doesn’t get you amped up to play football, I don’t know what will. It’s special.

Georgia starting quarterback Carson Beck is one of many Georgia players to play their high school football in Florida. That is part of the reason why the Georgia-Florida game means more to so many players.

We have a lot of Florida guys on our team. I know it’s special for them as well. Me being a Georgia boy, it’s damn sure special for me. We have to do whatever we can to come out with the victory.

Javon Bullard, who played high school football at Baldwin High School in Milledgeville, Georgia, has 20 tackles and three pass deflections this season. He missed some action with an ankle injury, but feels good now.

This year, physically I’ve been banged up pretty good, but now I feel like I’m back. The coaches think I’m back. I’m ready to attack.

Georgia needs Bullard to have a big game against Florida. The Georgia defense needs to step up with star tight end Brock Bowers out over the next several weeks.

Kirby Smart gives injury updates ahead of UAB matchup

Updates on Javon Bullard, Kendall Milton, Roderick Robinson & more…

The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs’ injury list is a long one. Several players missed last week’s win against South Carolina and others exited the game due to new injuries.

On Tuesday, head coach Kirby Smart provided an update on some of those Bulldogs who are battling to get back on the field this Saturday against UAB.

Running backs Kendall Milton (MCL) and Roderick Robinson (ankle) haven’t been practicing this week, according to Smart.

“Kendall’s been in rehab. He’s been rehabbing and working, and Roderick hasn’t been able to practice with us so they haven’t looked good in terms of practice ’cause they haven’t been out there. I’m hoping that we can get them back. It looks very doubtful that Roderick’s going to be able to play this week. I’m still holding out hope that Kendall might be able to, but I can’t say that ’cause he has not practiced.”

Starting safety Javon Bullard missed the South Carolina matchup after suffering an ankle sprain in Georgia’s win over Ball State in Week 2.

“Yeah, he hasn’t done much (in practice). He warmed up, didn’t feel great in warmups, we shut him down and he hasn’t done much this week in terms of being able to practice. I asked him today, and he’s underwater running, got a boot on, but he has not been able to practice.”

Junior offensive tackle Austin Blaske has yet to take a snap this season due to a MCL injury.

“Blaske has practiced. Man he is a tough dude. But he’s hurting. He’s trying his best out there. O line is a position you might be able to get away with an MCL because you’re not out there in space running and cutting but he’s not 100 percent healthy.”

The Bulldogs may be able to sit players that are still not fully healthy this week versus UAB, but the schedule doesn’t get any easier. Georgia will travel to Auburn (3-0) next week.

Kirby Smart gives injury update on UGA safety Javon Bullard

Kirby Smart gives injury update on star Georgia football safety Javon Bullard ahead of UAB game

Georgia Bulldogs standout safety Javon Bullard went down in first quarter of the Ball State game with an ankle injury. Bullard was unable to play against South Carolina after he tried to give it a go in warmups.

Georgia safety David Daniel-Sisavanh started in place of Bullard against South Carolina. Safety Dan Jackson, who had a fourth quarter interception against South Carolina, also saw more action in Bullard’s absence. Sophomore safety Malaki Starks is Georgia’s other starter.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart noted on Sept. 19 that Bullard has not returned to practice, so it is unlikely he will play in Week 4 against UAB.

He (Bullard) hasn’t been able to do much. He warmed up (against South Carolina), didn’t feel great in warmups, so we shut him down and hasn’t done much this week in terms of practice. I asked him today, and he is underwater running, got a boot on, but he has not been able to practice.

Bullard is a key cog in the Georgia defense. He was named the defensive MVP of national championship and the College Football Playoff semifinal against Ohio State. Bullard is playing safety, which is his usual position, after playing the star position at a high level in 2022.

Bullard’s combination of speed and sure tackling helps the Georgia pass and run defense play at an elite level. Bullard finished last season with two interceptions, 46 tackles, and 3.5 sacks. Bullard was a 2023 preseason All-SEC selection.

Kirby Smart shares injury updates ahead of Georgia-South Carolina

Kirby provides updates on Ladd McConkey, Daijun Edwards, Javon Bullard…

The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs (2-0) will be back in Sanford Stadium on Saturday to open the SEC season versus the South Carolina Gamecocks (1-1).

Head coach Kirby Smart took the podium on Monday to share updates regarding the Bulldogs’ injury situation.

Georgia has been without key starters so far this season. Leading returning rusher Daijun Edwards has been out with an MCL strain, and leading returning receiver Ladd McConkey has been sidelined with a back injury. Starting safety Javon Bullard went down with an ankle injury in Georgia’s win over Ball State last week.

Smart listed Edwards and defensive tackle Christen Miller (cervical strain) as available for Saturday. McConkey is day-to-day. Bullard will miss some practice time this week and his status for Saturday is in doubt.

“I have not seen Javon yet because of Sunday being off and then today coming in,” Smart said. As far as where he is, probably won’t know until Wednesday’s practice whether he’s going to be able to go or not. We’ve had guys in that position with that similar injury be able to play. But I really have no clue until we get further into the week.”

While you can’t overlook an SEC matchup, South Carolina doesn’t pose as big of a threat as the latter part of Georgia’s conference schedule does. The Bulldogs will need the starters back when matchups with Kentucky, Missouri, Ole Miss and Tennessee roll around.

Georgia star safety out for Ball State game with ankle injury

Star UGA football safety Javon Bullard ruled out for the Ball State game with an ankle injury

Star Georgia Bulldogs safety Javon Bullard has been ruled out for the Ball State game with an ankle injury. Bullard suffered the injury in the first quarter.

Bullard is a critical piece of the Georgia defense. He was named the defensive MVP of national championship and the College Football Playoff semifinal against Ohio State. Bullard is playing safety, which is his usual position, after playing the STAR position at a high level in 2022.

The rising star defensive back finished his sophomore season with two interceptions, 46 tackles, and 3.5 sacks.

The junior safety has recorded four total tackles in 2023. Bullard was healthy enough to jog to the locker room, so it is not expected to be a severe ankle injury. We while provide further updates on Bullard soon.

Bullard was seen wearing a walking boot in the second half.

Eagles land Georgia’s Javon Bullard in Jordan Reid’s latest 2024 NFL mock draft for ESPN

Philadelphia is stacking up on Bulldog defenders and this time the Eagles land Georgia’s Javon Bullard in Jordan Reid’s 2024 NFL mock draft for ESPN

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

The Eagles are reloading on defense, and GM Howie Roseman couldn’t possibly go Georgia Bulldog again in 2024, could he?

Among the looming questions surrounding Philadelphia’s quest for a Super Bowl return is the potential to add more defenders from Kirby Smart’s unit.

Roseman chooses to stay with the Alabama Crimson Tide when adding talented offensive players.

ESPN’s Jordan Reid just released his latest first-round prediction for April’s NFL draft, and he has the Eagles adding star safety Javon Bullard to an already-loaded safety group.

Javon Bullard, S, Georgia

It’d be wrong to not put a Georgia player here, right? The Eagles have repeatedly drafted players from the Bulldogs’ loaded roster, and maybe Bullard is next. They haven’t found a solution to losing C.J. Gardner-Johnson this offseason, but Bullard brings a very similar skill set to the slot. He primarily plays nickel and strong safety in Georgia’s defense, and he’s a physical tone-setter. Bullard had 50 tackles and two interceptions last season.

Potential needs: S, CB, EDGE

Like Sydney Brown and the other Eagles safeties, Bullard is a hybrid who can play the slot or navigate with deep range and is a potential guy who could play the STAR position in Sean Desai’s defense.

Bullard would make six Georgia defenders on the Eagles’ defense, and the team would be five more (DE, CB, LB, S, S) away from having a complete Bulldogs starting unit.

Georgia DB Javon Bullard signs NIL deal inspired by controversial hit against OSU

“Bullard’s Buckeye Crunch” is the name of the new flavor

Georgia defensive back Javon Bullard had a fantastic postseason for the Bulldogs during their second consecutive national title run, earning Defensive MVP in both the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and the College Football Playoff championship game. Against TCU in the title game, Bullard forced three turnovers as the Dawgs won 65-7.

But no play was bigger than his crushing hit against Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. in the back of the end zone to break up what could have been a touchdown, pending the ref’s decision whether or not to call illegal touching had it been caught. Bullard’s hit was initially ruled targeting, but the call was overturned and allowed Georgia to stay close enough to pull off the victory.

Controversial or not, that hit may have saved UGA’s season. And Bullard is capitalizing on it, signing another NIL deal inspired by the play. This time it’s with Alumni Cookie Dough, an Athens, Georgia, cookie dough shop which introduced a new flavor called “Bullard’s Buckeye Crunch.” The flavor consists of chocolate cookie dough with peanut butter candies and Oreos.

It was a controversial hit and both sides will likely forever argue the final verdict. Ohio State coach Ryan Day disclosed that Harrison Jr. was knocked unconscious on the hit and was evaluated for a concussion.

“I made a lot of calls after the game,” Buckeyes’ coach Day said regarding the hit. “I felt like it was targeting. In the moment, when things are moving very fast and you can’t see the replay, it’s very hard to see. The hard thing for me is to see and understand that and have our medical staff let us know that he was knocked unconscious and that’s why we’re not going to let him back in the game, yet the flag gets picked up for targeting.”

Here’s a look at the hit:

This not the first time Bullard has cashed in on the hit. In February, Georgia-based memorabilia company “More Than Sports” sold a “hand-signed photo” of Bullard’s hit with the inscription “Night Night.” Copies of the photo were selling for $129.99.

The use of the phrase “Night Night,” which was undeniably a bad idea, caught Harrison’s eye:

Nick Radosta, the CEO “More Than Sports,” went on to release a statement in which he apologized to Harrison Jr.

“What was intended to memorialize a big play in the Georgia Bulldogs national championship run was taken too far,” Radosta wrote. “As football fans, we celebrate big hits and aggressive plays on the field, but we do not celebrate the injury of a player. Though it was deemed to be a legal hit by officials, and confirmed by Mr. Harrison himself, he was injured on that play. Therefore, the inscription accompanying the photograph was insensitive and inappropriate.”

The listing was removed and proceeds from the photo will be directed to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Radosta said.

Bullard hails from Milledgeville, Georgia, a town located in Baldwin County. Bullard was celebrated by his hometown with a parade and a key to the city on March 11, which is now called “Javon Bullard Day.”

2 Georgia Bulldogs ranked among top returning CBs for 2023 season

Javon Bullard & Kamari Lassiter are ranked among the top 10 returning CBs… Thoughts?

Georgia cornerbacks Javon Bullard and Kamari Lassiter bolstered the Bulldogs’ 2022 defense as first-year starters and will have prominent roles as juniors in 2023.

Lassiter filled the void left by now Los Angeles Rams cornerback Derion Kendrick in 2022 and played beyond his experience, racking up 38 stops, one-half sacks and four pass breakups in 15 games.

Bullard burst onto the scene in Georgia’s second consecutive national title season as a force in the secondary as the primary slot corner, known as the star position.

Bullard earned defensive MVP honors in both the Peach Bowl win over Ohio State and the national championship win over TCU. The Milledgeville, Georgia, native finished the season with 46 stops, 3.5 sacks, three pass breakups and two interceptions.

Pro Football Focus recently ranked the top 10 cornerbacks returning for the 2023 season. Bullard came in at No. 7, and Lassiter was named at No. 10.

Both Bulldogs will be heavily relied upon in 2023 considering the loss of All-SEC cornerback Kelee Ringo and All-American safety Christopher Smith to the NFL draft.

Georgia memorabilia store issues apology for Marvin Harrison Jr. photo

So, at least there’s this … #GoBucks

If you’ve been following the news cycle the last couple of days, you no doubt have come across the story of the Georgia memorabilia store that had been selling photos in bad taste.

More Than Sports issued an apology on Facebook through its CEO, Nick Radosta, on Wednesday night for selling two photos of the hit that knocked Marvin Harrison Jr. out of the game in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. It was signed by Georgia defensive back Javon Bullard who delivered the hit in the back of the end zone, and inscribed “Night Night.” Each photo had been selling for $129.99.

And, yeah, there was a lot of criticism and outrage at what many fans feel crossed the line of competition to celebrate a hit that knocked a player out and put him in concussion protocol.

But hey, if we report the story, then we have to give credit when someone comes back to own up to it, and that’s exactly what we have here. In a Facebook post Wednesday, Radosta wanted to let everyone know it was a lack of judgment. Here’s the apology thanks to a tweet from Eleven Warriors.

We will not get into any of the reported news out there that this could have been a photo used without permission, but at least Radosta did the right thing here and admitted the mistake in trying to profit off this in the first place.
