2020 49ers draft class: All 5 picks made

Breaking down all 5 49ers picks in the 2020 NFL draft class.

The 49ers wound up with five picks in the 2020 NFL draft after a slew of trades, including one that landed them seven-time Pro Bowl tackle Trent Williams from Washington.

They didn’t fill all of their pre-draft needs, but their shrewd moves around the board landed them players who should be able to carve out contributing roles right away.

Here’s a quick breakdown of each selection:

Round 1, Pick 14 | DL Javon Kinlaw, South Carolina

Jeff Blake-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers traded back one spot from pick No. 13 to snag Kinlaw. He is a a 6-5, 324-pound monster in the middle with the athleticism to play all over the line. Kinlaw uses his long arms and explosiveness to light up offensive linemen and quickly shed them on his way to the backfield. The sack numbers aren’t great (10 in his last two seasons), but his physical skill set puts his ceiling in the realm of DeForest Buckner, who he was brought in to replace. They want a strong defensive line – and Kinlaw gives them that opportunity.

It’s easy to see why 49ers like Jauan Jennings

There aren’t many receivers better at breaking tackles than Jauan Jennings.

The 49ers might’ve gotten a steal with their final pick in this year’s draft. They used the 217th overall pick to select Tennessee wide receiver Jauan Jennings – a player Pro Football Focus valued in the third round. His skill set is something 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan should be able to take full advantage of.

It’s easy to see how Jennings was overlooked by the league. He was temporarily dismissed from the Volunteers’ program for a profanity-laced video on social media directed at the team’s coaching staff. Then he didn’t test well with a 4.72 40-yard dash and just a 29-inch vertical leap.

However, his skill set drew a comparison by PFF to former 49ers first-round pick Michael Crabtree. Jennings was the No. 70 player on the football analytics site’s draft board.

While the production and athleticism aren’t great, his after-the-catch ability is likely what stood out to Shanahan. Jennings racked up missed tackles on 51 percent of his receptions– the highest mark in the class, which is especially impressive since Jennings plays in the SEC.

Shanahan’s offense thrives on receivers who break tackles and generate yards after the catch on short throws, and that’s Jennings’ specialty.

He’s not guaranteed a roster spot as a seventh-round pick. The 49ers receiving corps needs help though, and Jennings has a skill set that should translate quickly in the NFL. If he can convert on third downs and in the red zone as a big, physical target while racking up receiving yards after the catch – Jennings may carve out a big role quickly in his pro career.

Jauan Jennings joins three former Vols in San Francisco

Jauan Jennings joins three former Vols in San Francisco.

SAN FRANCISCO – Former Tennessee wide receiver Jauan Jennings has a NFL home, after being taken 217th overall in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.

Jennings will be reunited with three former Tennessee teammates, joining Jalen Hurd, Jonathan Kongbo and Emmanuel Moseley.

Hurd played running back for the Vols from 2014-16 before transferring to Baylor, where he converted to wide receiver and was taken by the 49ers in the third round last year. Jennings and Hurd will be part of the same wide receiver room.

Kongbo, a linebacker, was with Jennings until his senior year in 2018 at Tennessee. He went to San Francisco by way of the Canadian Football League after a stint with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Moseley is the most accomplished of the group just two seasons into his NFL career after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2018. Moseley started nine games and picked up 50 tackles, eight passes defended, and an interception at cornerback for the defending NFC champions.

Jennings’ five-year career at Tennessee saw him reel in 146 catches for 2,153 yards and 18 touchdowns, finishing in the top five in program history in all three statistics. Known for his physical ability after the catch, Jennings led the SEC in broken tackles by receivers in 2019, and will always be remembered fondly by UT fans for his touchdown catches in 2016 against Florida and Georgia. His iconic plays go along with his leadership and demeanor on the football field.

Jennings is headed to a contender that fell just short of winning the Super Bowl last season, and will join a wide receiver room filled with talent that includes Deebo Samuel, Marquise Goodwin, Hurd and fellow rookie from TCU Brandon Aiyuk.

With Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback, San Francisco is poised for another championship run in 2020 with three former Vols on the roster.

49ers select WR Jauan Jennings with final pick in 2020 NFL draft

Jauan Jennings is a big-bodied wide receiver and Tennessee’s team MVP.

The 49ers used the 217th pick in the 2020 NFL draft to select Tennessee wide receiver Jauan Jennings.

Despite not going until the seventh round, Jennings will have a shot to make the roster with an unproven group at that position. He’s the second receiver selected by San Francisco. They also took Arizona State’s Brandon Aiyuk in Round 1.

Jennings comes with very good size at 6-3, 215 pounds. He was the Volunteers team MVP a season ago while hauling in 59 passes for 969 yards and eight touchdowns. He also had 13 carries for 51 yards.  Jennings was dismissed from the team as a junior for a profanity-laced video aimed at the Tennessee coaching staff.  He played just one game that year. He wound up returning for his final two years.

Across five seasons he had 146 receptions, 2,153 yards and 18 touchdowns.

He’s very good after the catch and does a nice job using his frame to box out defenders. Jennings has to use his physicality because his 4.72 40-yard dash doesn’t allow for a ton of separation. His skill set could wind up earning him a role as a fourth or fifth receiver early in his career.

KNOXVILLE — Former Tennessee wide receiver Jauan Jennings has been selected in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Jennings was taken in the seventh round (pick No. 217) by the San Francisco 49ers.

The former Vol had two iconic plays in 2016 with a 67-yard touchdown in a victory over Florida and catching a game-winning 43-yard Hail Mary with no time left at Georgia the next week. During the same season, against Kentucky, Jennings made an interception on a Wildcat Hail Mary in the closing seconds of the first half.

The Tennessee native played in 50 games at UT, totaling 146 receptions for 2,153 yards and 18 touchdowns through the air.

The 2020 NFL Draft will take place Thursday through Saturday and will be televised on ABC, ESPN and NFL Network.

Round 1 will kickoff at 8 p.m. ET Thursday, and rounds 2 and 3 will be held Friday beginning at 7 p.m. ET. The 2020 NFL Draft will conclude Saturday with Rounds 4 through 7 starting at noon ET.

Chicago Bears 2020 Mock Draft 1.0

The Bears still have some needs to address on the offense and defense, which Colton tackles in his first mock draft of the season.

With the NFL Draft season in full swing, there’s no better time for a mock draft.

The Chicago Bears went into the offseason with a lot of holes on offense and defense. They filled out some defensive holes but it still needs work, and on the offensive side, they traded for Nick Foles and signed Jimmy Graham.

General manager Ryan Pace still needs to address the offensive line, cornerback, tight end, wide receiver, and safety. Yes, I know they just signed Graham but do you really feel comfortable with him playing tight end all year? I sure don’t.

The offensive line was the biggest problem for the Bears last year and it led to Mitchell Trubisky having a down year, and it also led to the running game not doing so well. So heading into the draft, addressing the offensive line should be at the top of the list.

Chicago’s wide receiver core is good, but I still think we can add to it, especially following the departure of Taylor Gabriel. It’d be nice if Pace went out and signed Robby Anderson in free agency, but his price tag is a bit too high for the Bears. So it looks like Pace will have to go get a receiver in the draft.

One of the most underlying needs for the Bears heading into the offseason is cornerback. Kyle Fuller has turned into one of the best corners in the NFL, however, Chicago, lacks solid depth around him. Although Buster Skrine is set in the slot, the Bears could use an outside presence to help Fuller. Instead of drafting a cornerback in the draft, the Bears can still go out and sign a guy like Jimmy Smith.

The Bears have seven picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, including a pair of second-rounders, one fifth round selection, as well as two picks in each the sixth and seventh rounds.

Without further ado, let’s get this mock draft on:

Bills go defense with first 2 picks in NFL.com 3-round mock draft

Buffalo Bills picks in NFL.com’s first three-round 2020 NFL mock draft.

As the way things currently sit for the Bills, NFL.com believes Buffalo won’t sit tight with the way their defense stands when the 2020 NFL Draft rolls around.

In the outlet’s first three-round mock draft of the offseason, the Bills go defense with their first two picks before addressing their offense in Round 3 with a receiver.

Here’s the full breakdown:

No. 22: DE Yetur Gross-Matos

School: Penn State | Year: Junior

With Shaq Lawson heading toward free agency this offseason, the Bills might look to the draft to keep the defense strong on the edge. Gross-Matos possesses the ability to stack his man on the line and beat him around the corner.

So far the popular pick for the Bills during mock draft season has been offense in Round 1… namely receiver. But the Bills pass on the likes of Clemson’s Tee Higgins, Colorado’s Laviska Shenault and LSU’s Justin Jefferson in NFL.com’s mock.

In Gross-Matos the Bills land the fourth edge defender off the board, but depending on the way the Bills attack free agency, he could make plenty of sense. Not only could the Bills lose Lawson, they could stand to use more production overall from the position. Lawson led the Bills’ defensive end group with 6.5 sacks last season. That’s not good enough.

If the Bills do land Gross-Matos, they could land a guy that many draft analysts consider as one of the more underrated edge defenders in the 2020 draft pool. Gross-Matos is praised as a high-motor athlete, but concerns are over his frame. He is 6-foot-5 and 260-plus pounds, but adding more will help him.

Bears target offense, secondary in Matt Miller’s 7-round mock draft

The Bears have plenty of needs to address this offseason, and they could certainly find some answers in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Bears have plenty of needs to address this offseason, and they could certainly find some answers in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Matt Miller released his first seven-round mock draft, which featured some intriguing prospects for the Bears’ 2020 draft class.

Everything from quarterback to tight end to defensive back to offensive line was addressed, as the Bears need some fixes if they’re to have any hope at playoff contention in 2020.

Let’s break down Miller’s first seven-round mock draft featuring eight Bears selections:

2nd Round, No. 43: TE Brycen Hopkins, Purdue

Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports

The Bears are certainly in need of a tight end that can bring production to the passing game. There are no shortage of tight end prospects that have been linked to the Bears, including Vandy’s Jared Pinkney and Dayton’s Adam Trautman. But another top tight end prospect that the Bears have already met with is Purdue’s Brycen Hopkins, who some argue is the best tight end in the NFL Draft.

Hopkins had 830 yards and six touchdowns with Purdue this season, which is the kind of production the Bears are seeking from the position. He would be the perfect fit for Matt Nagy’s “U” tight end. He’s a strong route runner and also brings explosiveness to the position.
