Titans sign Chance Campbell, Shyheim Carter to practice squad

The Titans have signed linebacker Chance Campbell and defensive back Shyheim Carter to the practice squad.

The Tennessee Titans are bringing back two familiar faces in linebacker Chance Campbell and defensive back Shyheim Carter.

The team announced on Tuesday that it has re-signed both Campbell and Carter to the practice squad after waiving the two players last week.

A 2022 sixth-round pick, Campbell failed to make the Titans’ 53-man roster out of training camp before being brought back on the practice squad. He was later promoted to the 53-man roster and has played in four games, with the vast majority of his snaps coming on special teams.

Carter was also a member of the practice squad before being promoted during the season. He actually made his NFL debut in the win over the Cincinnati Bengals and also played against the Baltimore Ravens.

After an impressive Week 8 win over the Atlanta Falcons, the Titans will be back in action in Week 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night at Acrisure Stadium.

Titans’ Shyheim Carter on playing first NFL game: ‘A few tears were shed’

Titans DB Shyheim Carter got emotional before playing in his first NFL game in Week 4.

Tennessee Titans defensive back Shyheim Carter first entered the league in 2020 as an undrafted free-agent signing of the New York Jets, but after stints with Gang Green, the Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans and even multiple in Tennessee since then, the Alabama product entered the 2023 campaign without having played a single regular season game during his career.

Carter’s time finally came in Week 4 against the Cincinnati Bengals, when he was elevated from the practice squad and played 11 snaps apiece on defense and special teams, finishing with one tackle.

Carter admits the opportunity made him emotional, according to Jim Wyatt of TennesseeTitans.com.

“A few tears were shed,” he said. “It was so surreal… Honestly, just watching God work, seeing Him unfold everything. It was able to bring me tears of joy and put a big smile on my face.”

With his first game under his belt, Carter is hoping to do more and eventually carve out a role for himself. But he knows he can never rest easy.

“I come in not knowing if I’m going to be elevated, if I’m going to be on the practice squad, or if I’m going to be released,” he explained. “I come in with the mindset that I’m going to be evaluated every day, in everything I do. I just keep my head down and work.

“It was a great experience, a great opportunity. For it to be my NFL debut, it was fun… I just want to do whatever I can to create a role, and keep going.”

Carter’s elevation came as a result of an injury to fellow defensive back Elijah Molden, who appears set to return to action this week. It remains to be seen if Carter will get the call again this week, but he’ll be ready if he does.

Titans add three to the practice squad

The Titans added two familiar names and one new one to the practice squad on Tuesday.

The Tennessee Titans filled their holes on the practice squad on Tuesday by adding three players to it.

The team announced it has signed outside linebacker Sam Okuayinonu, cornerback Shyheim Carter and defensive tackle Curtis Brooks to the practice squad.

A 2022 undrafted free agent signing of Tennessee, Okuayinonu has spent time on both the active roster and practice squad this season. He has 0.5 sacks and 11 tackles in six games this season.

Carter has been on Tennessee’s practice squad multiple times but has never gotten in a game for the Titans, or in the NFL in general.

Brooks is a brand new addition to the practice squad. A former sixth-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2022, the Cincinnati product has never played a snap in the NFL.

The Titans will return to the field on Saturday night when they do battle with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the AFC South title in Duval.

Former Alabama DB Shyheim Carter waived by Tennessee Titans

Former Alabama DB Shyheim Carter was waived by the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday.

The Tennessee Titans waived former Alabama defensive back Shyheim Carter on Monday. The team announced the news via the team’s Twitter page.

Carter spent four seasons in Tuscaloosa. He played primarily at the STAR position on Alabama’s defense. There, he started in 23 of the 50 games that he played in. Carter began to come along during his junior and senior seasons with the Crimson Tide. In the last two seasons of his college career, he recorded 87 tackles, six tackles for loss, and three interceptions.

After his senior season, he would go undrafted. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets in 2020. Since entering the league, he is yet to have recorded stats in an NFL regular season game. Altogether, Carter has been a practice squad player for three different teams: Titans, Jets, and Texans.

Now, he will be looking to join another team after being waived by the Titans. Each NFL team was tasked with transitioning their rosters from 85-man rosters to 80-man rosters on Tuesday. Unfortunately for Carter, he was one of the five. Nonetheless, he has proven that he will compete regardless of the contract. It will be interesting to see which team signs Carter next.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Carter’s career as well as other Alabama football players in the NFL.

Titans waive four players ahead of second cutdown day

The Titans waived four players ahead of the second cutdown day on Tuesday.

The Tennessee Titans parted ways with four players on Monday, the day before the team has to trim its roster down to 80 players.

The four players getting the boot are outside linebacker Justin Lawler, wide receiver Terry Godwin, defensive back Shyheim Carter and cornerback Shakur Brown. Brown and Carter were waived with injury designations.

The injury to Brown is extra unfortunate, as the former USFL standout had a great shot to make the roster after showing out upon arriving in Nashville. In fact, we had him on our latest 53-man roster projection before news of him being waived came out.

With the moves, the Titans’ roster now sits at 81 players, which means they have one more player to cut. Rosters must be trimmed down by 4 p.m. ET Tuesday.

After their preseason Week 2 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night, the Titans will be back on the practice field on Monday.

Tennessee Titans add three more players on futures contracts

The Titans signed three more players to futures contracts on Tuesday.

In addition to the 11 players signed to futures/reserves contracts on Monday, the Tennessee Titans signed three more on Tuesday, bringing their total of futures contracts inked to 16.

The team announced it has signed defensive backs Shyheim Carter and Rodney Clemons, and linebacker Nate Hall to futures deals.

Carter played collegiate football at Alabama, becoming a regular starter over his last two years on campus and racking up 86 combined tackles (six for loss), and three interceptions over that span.

He was just one of two Alabama defensive backs who were not selected in the 2020 NFL draft. After going undrafted, Carter was signed by the New York Jets, and also spent time with the Houston Texans and Atlanta Falcons.

At 6-foot, 209 pounds, Clemons played his college ball at SMU, where he was a four-year starter. The Katy, Texas native recorded 78 tackles in his senior season, including three for loss, and had a team-leading four interceptions.

Hall has bounced around several clubs in a short amount of time. The Dallas Cowboys signed the former Northwestern linebacker as an undrafted free agent after the 2019 NFL Draft.

Since then, he’s spent time with the Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Arizona Cardinals. Hall has played in three NFL games, recording ten total tackles and two sacks while forcing a fumble.

Here’s a look at the full list of 16 players the Titans have signed to futures contracts so far this offseason:

WATCH: S Shyheim Carter records Texans fourth takeaway against the Cowboys

Houston Texans safety Shyheim Carter recorded the fourth turnover of the night against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Houston Texans appear to have a top-10 defense through the first two preseason games. Late in the fourth quarter, defensive back Shyheim Carter recorded an interception thrown by Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Ben DiNucci.

Carter’s pick was the Texans’ fourth turnover during Saturday night’s preseason match at AT&T Stadium. Lonnie Johnson recorded a pick-six on DiNucci, while Jacob Martin forced a strip-sack on quarterback Garrett Gilbert prior to Carter’s interception.

Through their first two preseason games, the Texans have recorded a total of six turnovers thus far. Under former defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, the Texans ended last season with a total of nine — a league-low.

Houston prevailed 20-14 over Dallas.

Texans invite former Alabama cornerback Shyheim Carter to rookie minicamp

The Houston Texans have extended a rookie minicamp invite to former Alabama cornerback Shyheim Carter.

The Houston Texans have extended a rookie minicamp invite to former Alabama cornerback Shyheim Carter.

The invite is on a tryout basis, according to Aaron Wilson of SportsTalk 790.

Carter is currently a graduate assistant at Alabama, incidentally where former Texans coach Bill O’Brien is now the offensive coordinator under Nick Saban.

With Alabama from 2016-19, Carter collected 100 combined tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, three interceptions, two pick-sixes, two forced fumbles, and 18 pass breakups through 34 career games.

Carter is one of five invitees the Texans can have over the two-day portion of offseason workouts.

“It’s an opportunity for them, quite frankly, to take some of the stuff they’ve been doing in the classroom and then maybe get on the field and apply cadence, snap count, blocking technique, go this way on this play, just to hear the play call in the huddle,” general manager Nick Caserio told reporters on May 10. “Again, you’re talking about maybe a couple hours over the course of two days. It’s not going to be like a full-fledged practice, but again it’s kind of to start the process of taking what you learned in the classroom and start to put it on the field in terms of a real live application.”

The Texans have a stacked cornerback group already with Vernon Hargreaves, Bradley Roby, Keion Crossen, Terrance Mitchell, and Desmond King.

Alabama football countdown: 5 days until kickoff

We are 5 days from Alabama football kicking off its season on the road against the Missouri Tigers to start a 10-game, SEC only schedule.

There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding college football over the last couple of months, but as of right now, the season still looks like it’s a go for the SEC, ACC and Big 12.

So, what does that mean? It means that we can continue the Countdown to Kickoff en route to the Crimson Tide — and the rest of the SEC — getting things underway on Sept. 26.

With it now being Sept. 21, we are officially 5 days away from the start!

Alabama has two players wearing the No. 5 this season. On defense, it’ll be redshirt sophomore Jalyn Armour-Davis, who is expected to be a valuable depth piece at cornerback for the Crimson Tide.

On offense, it will be true freshman wide receiver Javon Baker out of Powder Springs (Ga.). After a good first fall camp in Tuscaloosa, Baker is poised to make some sort of impact in a depth/rotational role in 2020.

Former Alabama defensive back Shyheim Carter wore the number throughout his career prior to those two players listed above.

Jets reveal numbers for 5 new players, including Frank Gore

Frank Gore, Bryce Hall, Quincy Wilson, Javelin Guidry and Shyheim Carter all received their jersey numbers.

Five new Jets players have their numbers for the 2020 season.

The Jets released numbers for newcomers Frank Gore, Bryce Hall, Quincy Wilson, Javelin Guidry and Shyheim Carter on Monday. Gore will wear No. 25 for his 16th season in the NFL. He’s worn No. 21 for the majority of his career, but has also occupied Nos. 20 and 23 before. The 37-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Jets worth $1.05 million and is expected to be the No. 2 back behind Le’Veon Bell.

Hall, drafted in the fifth round out of Virginia by the Jets in this past draft, will wear No. 37. He wore No. 34 at Virginia, but that is owned by Brian Poole.

As for Wilson, he was acquired in a trade from the Colts in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He’ll wear No. 27 after wearing No. 31 for the Colts. Bless Austin occupies No. 31 for New York.

Guidry will wear No. 40 for the Jets. The Jets signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Utah this year. Carter is on the Jets’ Reserve/COVID-19 list but will wear No. 40 after being signed as an undrafted free agent out of Alabama.
