Report: Free agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul to sign with Saints

CBS Sports insider Josina Anderson reports that free agent defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul plans to sign with the New Orleans Saints after a productive workout:

There’s that pass rush help the New Orleans Saints were looking for. Free agent defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is planning to sign with the Saints, as first reported by CBS Sports insider Josina Anderson. Pierre-Paul was flown into New Orleans on Monday for a workout which went well enough for the Saints to offer him a contract.

“I killed the workout,” Pierre-Paul told Anderson before putting pen to paper. “You can tell I’ve been active (and) not just sitting around. The head coach called me in his office to talk about it. I’m still figuring things out.”

Pierre-Paul, 34, was a first round draft pick by the New York Giants back in 2010; the South Florida product went on to earn three Pro Bowl nods and All-Pro recognition in 2011, totaling 94.5 sacks and 21 forced fumbles in 179 regular season games. He most recently played for the Baltimore Ravens after a four-year run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

We’ll see whether Pierre-Paul is going to sign with the Saints’ practice squad or 53-man roster. Either way, he’ll be available for their next game with the Atlanta Falcons after coming out of the Week 11 bye. New Orleans has rostered Cameron Jordan, Carl Granderson, Tanoh Kpassagnon, Kyle Phillips, and Isaiah Foskey (who is dealing with an injury) while stashing Niko Lalos and Jordan Willis on the practice squad, so someone will get bumped out of the rtoation to make room for him. Stay tuned for official word that the deal has been completed.

Saints hosted free agent pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul for a workout

The New Orleans Saints hosted free agent pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul for a workout, looking to add juice to their defensive front:

Well this is interesting: the New Orleans Saints hosted free agent pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul for a workout at the team facility on Monday, per the daily NFL transactions wire. Pierre-Paul, 34, recently expressed interest in signing up with a playoff contender — and the Saints, who go on into their bye week on top of the NFC South standings, match that description.

Pierre-Paul fits the athletic prototype the Saints value at defensive end, weighing in at 6-foot-5 and 275 pounds, and he brings some proven production. He generated 22 quarterback pressures in a part-time role last year with the Baltimore Ravens after posting totals of 29, 65, 44, and 46 in four years with the division-rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He would likely be playing behind Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson in New Orleans (and maybe Tanoh Kpassagnon, too) but both of the young edge rushers the Saints have drafted in recent years are currently sidelined with injuries. It’s worth adding Pierre-Paul to the mix at least until Isaiah Foskey and Payton Turner can return to the field, and maybe longer if they can’t outplay him. We’ll have to wait and see if the Saints can reach an agreement with Pierre-Paul, but there’s clearly interest.

9 best free agent pass rushers after Jadeveon Clowney joined Ravens

The Jaguars showed brief interest in Jadeveon Clowney, but now he’s off the market. Could anyone else catch the team’s eye?

The pass rushing market was already thin Friday morning, but got it a little thinner when Jadeveon Clowney decided to join the Baltimore Ravens.

Clowney, 30, previously visited the Jacksonville Jaguars, but left without a contract. The team’s interest in a free agent pass rusher made sense given the Jaguars finished 26th in the NFL in sacks last season and didn’t make many changes at the position in the offseason.

Given the brief interest in Clowney, it’d make sense if the Jaguars peeked at the rest of the market.

Here are the best edge rushers still available with three weeks left until the regular season begins:

11 remaining free-agent pass rushers the Panthers could still sign

If the Panthers venture into free agency for a pass rusher, here are 11 notable players they could scoop off the market:

If this summer’s pass-rushing competition doesn’t result in a clear partner for Pro Bowler Brian Burns, the Carolina Panthers may be venturing into free agency to pick a winner. And if they do, here are 11 notable edge defenders they could choose from:

7 of the top 50 draft prospects draw comparisons to current and former Giants

Doug Farrar gives 7 of the top 50 prospects in the 2023 NFL draft a pro comparison to current or former members of the New York Giants.

One of the more entertaining parts of the pre-draft process is learning which pro comparisons are given to top prospects. It’s a measure that helps casual fans recognize potential and understand what sort of style certain players will bring to the NFL.

Pro comparisons also help break up the relentless monotony of mock drafts.

Late last week, Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar offered up his comparisons for the top 50 prospects in the 2023 NFL draft class. Seven of them were compared to players who, at one point or another, suited up for the New York Giants.

Here’s a look at all seven prospects who were compared to current or former members of Big Blue.

Ravens release second injury report for Week 11 matchup vs. Panthers

The Ravens released their second injury report for Week 11 against the Carolina Panthers

The Baltimore Ravens will face off against the Carolina Panthers in Week 11 of the 2022 season. Baltimore comes into the contest at 6-3 coming off of their bye week, while Carolina enters at 3-7 after a big Week 10 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

The Ravens released the second injury report for Week 11, with a much shorter list than many have become accustomed to.  The bad news however, is that the two most important players on the report are still limited in practice in running back Gus Edwards and tight end Mark Andrews.

Andrews and Edwards have both been limited this week, but it’s better than not practicing at all.  Outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul has been a full participant in practice this week, so all looks good for him to be back on Sunday.

It’s not often that you seen an injury report this small, especially so late in an NFL season. The Ravens are in a much better spot this season compared to last, and many are hoping they can continue to get players back from injury without losing any more.

Ravens HC John Harbaugh gives injury updates on multiple key players

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh gave injury updates on key players

The Baltimore Raven’s bye week ended has concluded as they now prepare to face Baker Mayfield and the Carolina Panthers at M&T Bank Stadium.   Before the bye, the Ravens faced a few injuries, such as tight end Mark Andrews, running back Gus Edwards, wide receiver DeSean Jackson, and outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul.

The bye week came at a great time for the team in hopes of getting those players back for the stretch run. Head coach John Harbaugh spoke to the media on Monday, and gave updates on the injured players as well as how it was for Andrews to have a few weeks off.

“I think, good. [When] you talk to Mark [Andrews], he sounds very positive, obviously, about it, and the trainers, as well. We’ll see how it progresses throughout the rest of the week. It’ll be the same answer for Gus [Edwards]. ‘JPP’ [Jason Pierre-Paul] was out there today. And [with] DeSean [Jackson], all those guys, we’ll just see how they look on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. They all have a real good chance.”

If the Ravens can stay relatively healthy for the rest of the season, they should have a legitimate shot at making a deep run in the playoffs. Andrews and Edwards in particular are crucial parts of the offensive game plan, so having them both back will be able to keep opposing defenses honest.  This season health-wise, the team is in better shape than they were in 2021.

Ravens HC John Harbaugh gives updates on injured players following Week 9 vs. Saints

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh gave updates on injured players following Week 9 against the Saints

The Baltimore Ravens beat the New Orleans Saints 27-13 on “Monday Night Football” in Week 9. The win brought their record to 6-3 and allowed them to keep sole possession of first place in the AFC North as they head into their bye week.

Baltimore saw a few players go down with injuries throughout the contest in wide receiver DeSean Jackson and outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul. Head coach John Harbaugh gave an update on both players, talking about how the outside linebacker tweaked his ankle and both he and Jackson should be good to go after the bye week.

“Yes, he kind of tweaked his ankle a little bit. Nothing too serious, it just wasn’t something that we felt like we wanted to challenge too much with the way the game was going right there. So, he should be fine coming back from the bye [week]. Same thing with DeSean [Jackson]; he should be fine coming back from the bye.”

The good news about the bye week is that it will give players who are dealing with minor injuries a chance to heal up in time for the stretch run.  The Ravens need as many players healthy as possible in order to make it to the Super Bowl, and while they’ve seen season-ending injuries happen, they are in a relatively good spot, especially compared to last season.
