What Clemson’s RB room looks like for 2024 without Will Shipley

What can we expect from Clemson’s running back room in 2024 without Will Shipley?

Clemson’s running back room in 2024 will look different with the departure of long-time offensive focal point Will Shipley.

Shipley recently declared for the 2024 NFL draft, ending his time with the program. While it stings to lose a guy as talented as Shipley, Clemson’s running back room is in a fine place heading into 2024 without him.

The Tigers have another star in the backfield, Phil Mafah, who is likely to return for the 2024 season. Mafah stepped up in a big way this season, recording career highs in rushing attempts (179), rushing yards (965), rushing touchdowns (13), receptions (21) and receiving yards (108) in 506 snaps over 13 games (five starts). Mafah didn’t get a full workload until Clemson’s loss against NC State, but that’s when we really saw the breakout.

Over the season’s final six games, Mafah ran for 610 yards and nine touchdowns. When given the reins, Mafah became a force for this offense. His true breakout came in Clemson’s 31-23 upset win over Notre Dame, during which he took 36 carries for 186 yards and two touchdowns. A true workhorse performance.

At starting running back, the Tigers are covered. But what about beyond Mafah? Well, that’s where someone will have to step up. Currently on the roster, the Tigers have Keith Adams Jr., Jay Haynes and Jarvis Green. They also add incoming freshman David Eziomume.

There is undoubtedly talent behind Mafah, but it’s really about who is going to step up. It’s safe to assume that whoever does will likely need to be active out of the backfield, as Mafah isn’t the most polished receiving back. I’m not saying he can’t improve there; it just doesn’t necessarily fit his build.

Right now, it is safe to expect Mafah to continue to be a workhorse for this backfield while running back coach CJ Spiller identifies who can be a reliable No. 2 for him.

Jersey numbers for every true freshman on Clemson’s roster

Clemson’s football team has a lot of new faces on its roster, so make sure you know who makes what play by learning their jersey numbers.

Clemson will kick off its 2023 season in under two months, and for roughly a quarter of the team’s roster, it will be their first collegiate football game.

The Tigers’ 2023 recruiting class, which consists of 26 commits, was ranked No. 11 in the nation, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

Highlighted by five-star defensive tackle Peter Woods, four-star defensive lineman T.J. Parker and four-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina, among others, Clemson’s freshmen class has players with high potential.

But, with so many new faces joining the team, it can be difficult to know who’s who in the first few games of the season.

To help fans keep track of those new faces, here are the jersey numbers for every Clemson true freshman on the roster, including walk-ons:

In-state RB recaps latest Clemson visit: ‘They treated me like family’

Dutch Fork’s (Irmo, S.C.) Jarvis Green is an in-state prospect that’s been on Clemson’s radar for quite some time now, as the junior running back made his way to campus for the program’s second junior day of the year on Saturday, March 5.

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with Green, who the Tigers continue to monitor and show extensive interest in. He’s very reasonably become a viable option for a Clemson team that’s only handed out offers to three running backs — Justice Haynes, Richard Young and Cedric Baxter — in the 2023 recruiting class.

“The visit was pretty good,” Green said. “They treated me like family. Coach (C.J.) Spiller always treats me like family every time I go up there. I got to talk to Coach (Brandon) Streeter a little bit and Coach Dabo a little bit.”

What did Green hear from the coaching staff while he was on campus?

“Just what they always say,” he said. “Just be patient, trust in God and have a good year next year. (Coach Spiller) said to always come up here so we can build a relationship.”

Green had a chance to see Spiller in action as he was a spectator for one of Clemson’s first practices of the spring.

“I really liked it because it really reminded me of my school,” Green said. “Our coaches are really patient with us and if you don’t understand something, they’ll take the time and just teach you it and then go on from there.

“It was like real because the coaches always say on the phone that there’s nothing that they’ll sugar-coat and they really don’t yell that much in practice. When I went there to go watch, they didn’t really yell. All the teammates were altogether bonding and they were laughing and joking around. It was just like a family bond there. They made it seem like they’re a real family.”

Green saw that again as he sat in and watched some film with Clemson’s running backs room. While sophomore running back Phil Mafah has been the lead guy this spring due to Will Shipley and Kobe Pace being sidelined with injuries, Green said he could sense a family-type bond in the room, as they bounced questions and answers off one another and Spiller.

Clemson’s running backs coach plans on coming down to Dutch Fork sometime this spring just to check out Green and see how he’s doing. The Silver Foxes are set to check off their spring season in around three weeks or so.

As far as his recruitment is concerned, Green has started to reel in more offers since the beginning of last month. Since March 2, he’s added offers from East Tennessee State, UMass, Miami (Ohio), Gardner Webb and Fordham.

It’s only a matter of time before Power Five schools jump into his recruitment. In addition to Clemson, he’s been hearing from Arizona, Wake Forest and TCU, as well as App State and Liberty.

“It’s starting to hit me a little bit, but my parents tell me just to take it day by day,” Green said, “and just to cherish the moments while they’re here.”

Green indicated that an offer was not discussed this time around. Though, Green will be back for Clemson’s spring game on Saturday, April 9, and will likely be back to participate in the Dabo Swinney Camp this summer.

Top talent flocking to Tiger Town for Clemson’s ‘spring elite day’

Clemson is set to host a slew of top prospects today for its second junior day of the year, which the Tigers are dubbing their “spring elite day” for recruits in the class of 2023.

Among the headliners expected to be in attendance is Central (Phenix City, Ala.) five-star A.J. Harris, the nation’s No. 2 cornerback and No. 17 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings. The 6-foot-2, 175-pounder has made multiple trips to Tiger Town and is a priority target for the Tigers. Last September, he released a top seven comprised of Clemson, Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Georgia and Ohio State.

Harris will be joined on campus by a host of other talented defensive backs, including Harris’ teammate at Central, cornerback Quintavious Billingsley; Lake Mary (Fla.) four-star cornerback Braedan Marshall; Eagles Landing Christian Academy (McDonough, Ga.) three-star cornerback Colton Hood; Daniel (Central, S.C.) cornerback Misun Kelley; North Oconee (Bogart, Ga.) cornerback Khalil Barnes; Loachapoka (Auburn, Ala.) cornerback Jacorious Hart; Milton (Alpharetta, Ga.) three-star safety Robert Billings; and A.C. Reynolds (Asheville, N.C.) safety Dashawn Stone.

Another headliner slated to be on hand for the spring elite day is Oceanside Collegiate Academy (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) four-star offensive lineman Monroe Freeling.

It will mark his first visit to Clemson since attending the Florida State game in late October of last year. He was also on campus last June to participate in the Dabo Swinney Camp, after which he picked up an offer from the Tigers.

Freeling said during a recent interview with The Clemson Insider that the Tigers “stand highly” in his recruitment heading into today’s visit.

“I really loved the culture there when I first went up and I’ve been maintaining a good relationship with (offensive line) coach (Thomas) Austin,” he said, “and I’m just looking forward to growing it some more when I get out there.”

Along with Clemson, which is heavily pursuing Freeling, he named Miami and Notre Dame as a couple of schools that have been recruiting him the hardest.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Freeling is the No. 1 prospect in South Carolina, No. 9 offensive tackle nationally and No. 82 overall prospect for the 2023 class.

South Point (Belmont, N.C.) four-star offensive lineman Sullivan Absher will also return to Clemson after picking up an offer from the Tigers in February – an offer that he told TCI he “had been working for, for a very long time.”  He previously traveled to Clemson twice during this past season – first for the Boston College game in October and then for the Wake Forest game in November.

Another big-time offensive lineman will be on campus today as well in Eagles Landing Christian Academy (McDonough, Ga.) four-star tackle Zechariah Owens.

As for the defensive linemen expected to be among the junior day visitors, there are several prominent prospects, namely St. John’s (Washington, D.C.) four-star David Ojiegbe, Hewitt-Trussville (Trussville, Ala.) four-star Hunter Osborne, Rome (Ga.) four-star Stephiylan Green, Upson-Lee (Thomaston, Ga.) four-star T.J. Searcy and Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star A.J. Hoffler.

A bunch of other standout class of 2023 prospects are on the expected guest list for the spring elite day, as well, including Hickory Ridge (Harrisburg, N.C.) four-star wide receiver Christian Hamilton; Bridgeland (Cypress, Texas) four-star tight end Reid Mikeska; Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star linebacker Dee Crayton; Fairfax (Va.) four-star linebacker Tony Rojas; F.W. Buchholz (Gainesville, Fla.) three-star wide receiver Creed Whittemore; Maiden (N.C.) High School three-star wide receiver Chris Culliver; Phoebus (Hampton, Va.) three-star athlete Jordan Bass; Sumter (S.C.) athlete Zyeir Gamble; and Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.) running back Jarvis Green.

A few notable 2024 prospects are planning to visit Clemson today, too, in Carrollwood Day (Tampa, Fla.) four-star defensive back Tavoy Feagin, Weddington (Matthews, N.C.) tight end Brooks Mauk and Towers (Decatur, Ga.) wide receiver/cornerback Keshawn Weathers.

In-state RB building ‘family bond’ with Spiller, Clemson

The Clemson Insider has the latest on an in-state running back prospect in the class of 2023, after speaking with Dutch Fork’s (Irmo, S.C.) Jarvis Green on Monday evening.

Clemson running backs coach C.J. Spiller came by Dutch Fork High School a couple of weeks ago to visit Green and stayed for his basketball game. In our conversation with Green, he detailed his interest in Clemson and his growing relationship with Spiller.

“It’s just nothing but a family bond,” Green said. “They’re just telling me to keep working and just be patient and trust in God.”

He feels like Spiller coming by his basketball game means that he’s really interested in him

“I feel like our relationship is good,” Green said of Spiller. “We’re actually bonding and he’s really talking to me and telling me what I need to work on and stuff like that, but other than that, it just feels like a tight bond with me and him.”

Even without that coveted offer, where would Green say Clemson currently stands in his recruitment?

“They’re definitely in my top three,” he said. “They’re for sure showing a lot of interest in me and keep talking to me from day in and day out. They’re in the top three for me right now, just because of the interest that coaches are showing to me.”

Spiller isn’t the only coach that’s been in touch with Green. Clemson offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter has also been in contact with him. According to Green, Streeter has reiterated Spiller’s message to him and also congratulated him on his accomplishments, while telling him to keep working.

Spiller and Streeter have previously recruited Dutch Fork’s last two college prospects that have come to Clemson.

Green is close with Antonio Williams, his teammate and Clemson four-star wide receiver signee, who will enroll this summer. He also has a relationship with Tigers’ freshman wide receiver Will Taylor, as Green indicated that he is like best friends with his younger brother.

He has been able to get a closer look at Clemson through the lens of Williams’ recruitment.

“Antonio told me that it’s like a family bond up there. It’s just nothing but family,” Green said. “He feels like it’s a home away from home and the coaches are just telling you the truth and they lead you to the pathway of where you need to be at.”

Right now, Green is being patient with his recruitment process — something he learned from Williams. He knows that his time will come and eventually, a Clemson offer could potentially be in the cards.

“It gives me a little confidence because Antonio is one of the best receivers in the country,” he added, “and for them to hold out that long and then when they offered him, I remember them being at our school like every other day, trying to recruit him and trying to tell him to come home. Just seeing that motivates me to be patient and just trusting God.”

Green will be coming up to Clemson on March 4 and then will be attending the program’s junior day on March 5. Green said that he’s definitely looking forward to it.

“Clemson’s a great school,” he added. “It’s amazing and I just want to be up there.”

Green took visits to Wake Forest and Charlotte this past month. Next month, in addition to Clemson, he plans on visiting Gardner-Webb, Georgia State and possibly another school.

Highly touted prospects headed to Death Valley for Clemson-Boston College game

Clemson will again play host to some top prospects for Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. game against Boston College in Death Valley.

Here are some of the bigger names The Clemson Insider has confirmed as planned visitors for the Clemson-BC game:

A couple of headliners among the recruits expected to be in attendance are Thomspon (Alabaster, Ala.) five-star defensive lineman Peter Woods, Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) four-star defensive back Caleb Downs and Auburn (Ala.) High School four-star center Bradyn Joiner.

Woods is the No. 4 defensive lineman and No. 17 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, which also tabs Downs as the No. 2 safety. Rivals ranks Joiner as the No. 1 center in the Class of 2023.

“They care for each player like they’re family,” Downs said of Clemson to TCI last month. “Everything you do, they want you to excel. They want to be there to help you with your ups and downs. It’s just a family there.”

A big-time receiver from North Carolina is slated to be on hand for Saturday’s game as well in Hickory Ridge (Harrisburg, N.C.) four-star Christian Hamilton, the No. 15 wideout and No. 93 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite.

Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham recently came up to Harrisburg to watch Hamilton play, now the highly-touted wide receiver prospect is returning the favor this weekend.

“What I’ve been hearing from Coach Grisham is that he thinks I’m an amazing player,” Hamilton told TCI. “He says just be patient with him because he doesn’t just throw out offers. He says (Clemson is) really, really close to offering me and also he wants me to keep in touch with him weekly.”

Among other notable Class of 2023 recruits on Clemson’s anticipated guestlist for Saturday’s contest are two Life Christain Academy (Colonial Heights, Va.) products in three-star offensive lineman Joshua Miller and four-star cornerback Antonio Cotman, Jr.

Miller picked up a Clemson offer back on Sept. 2 and is looking forward to getting back down to Tiger Town for Saturday’s marquee ACC matchup.

“I got a little bit of experience when I was there (in Charlotte), but it not really being a home game, I wasn’t able to get the full experience,” Miller told TCI earlier this month. “So, I’m excited to get down there to Clemson and actually see what an actual game day is like at their home stadium.”

As for Miller’s teammate and good friend, Cotman, he’s been feeling the love from Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed and is looking forward to seeing how the vibe is in Death Valley at Memorial Stadium, he said.

Some other marquee names that will be in attendance from the 2023 class include Sumter (S.C.) 2023 four-star defensive lineman Monteque Rhames, Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.) 2023 running back Jarvis Green and Pendleton (S.C.) 2023 offensive tackle, Aidan Leigh, who is the younger brother of Clemson true freshman offensive lineman Tristan Leigh.

Another name from the 2023 class that recently informed TCI of his incoming arrival is Katy (Tex.) running back Seth Davis, who was invited to the Clemson-BC game by Tigers’ running backs coach C.J. Spiller.

Last but certainly not least is Greenville (S.C.) 2022 tight end Josh Sapp, who is the son of former Clemson and NFL linebacker Patrick Sapp. TCI caught up with the Clemson target earlier this month on stop No. 1 during this season’s edition of The Tour of Champions.

He continues to build a relationship with Clemson offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Tony Elliott.

“Really just keeping in touch and checking up on each other,” Sapp said. “He and my dad have known each other for a while, so I kind of grew up knowing. It’s really just a cool relationship with him.”

Clemson made in-state running back feel like he was home during game day visit

This in-state running back was on campus for Clemson’s 49-3 win over South Carolina State back on Sept. 11.

Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.) 2023 running back Jarvis Green recently caught up with The Clemson Insider about his gameday experience in Death Valley and what he continues to hear from the Tigers.

“It was great. They had a great atmosphere. I love the coaches. They greeted me with open arms, made me feel like I was home.”

Green’s reaction?

“It was surprising to me. I was in shock. I got there, they just met me and they walked through and like I said, just open arms.”

Green and his family sat and ate lunch with Clemson runnings back coach C.J. Spiller and quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter. According to Green, they talked about his high school, whether or not he’s keeping up with his body and how his games have been going.

“It really feels good to be a hometown person going to Clemson, getting love from a school that’s one of the top in my state and in the country,” Green added. “It just feels good”

Green had a chance to catch up with his good friend, Clemson quarterback/wide receiver Will Taylor, as well as Lyn-J Dixon, who has since entered the transfer portal and Darien Rencher.

“It was great. I just felt his energy when we was talking and he was just excited, excited that I came up there and he wanted me to come up there again,” he said.

Green believes that he will be back at Memorial Stadium for Clemson’s marquee conference matchup against Boston College on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m.

For now, he continues to receive graphics and edits, in addition to mail on an almost daily basis from the Tigers.

Besides, Clemson schools like Wake Forest, App State, Coastal Carolina and UNC Charlotte are also showing Green some love.

As he continues to garner recruiting attention, especially from Clemson Green is proving that he’s an underrated commodity in the 2023 class.

He was named the Overall Player of the Game in Dutch Fork’s win over Spartanburg back on Friday, Sept. 24. Green recorded 144 all-purpose yards, adding 118 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns. On the season, he’s currently averaging around nine yards per carry and 113 yards per game.

Clemson will play host to some top prospects on Saturday at Death Valley for the game against South Carolina State at 5 p.m.

Here are some of the bigger names that The Clemson Insider has confirmed are planning to be attendance:

One of the headliners is Cumming (Ga.) West Forsyth four-star Oscar Delp, the No. 2 tight end in the 2022 class according to both 247Sports and Rivals.

Delp visited Clemson during the Dabo Swinney Camp in June and came back to campus for July’s All In Cookout. His four stated finalists are Clemson, Georgia, South Carolina and Michigan, and he has long been eyeing the end of September for his decision timeframe.

Several top prospects in the 2023 class are expected to be in The Valley on Saturday as well, including Del Valle (Texas) four-star wide receiver Braylon James, the No. 11 wide receiver and No. 75 overall prospect in his class according to the 247Sports Composite.

James told TCI this week that he has built a strong bond with Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham.

“Me and Coach Grisham are super close man,” James said. “No matter where I go I know I’ll always have a backbone in him.”

James is extremely high on Clemson and was blown away by his late-July visit to Tiger Town, which he detailed with TCI last month.

Among other standout class of 2023 recruits that TCI has confirmed are planning to be in attendance for Saturday’s game are Loganville (Ga.) Grayson four-star safety Michael Daugherty, Suwanee (Ga.) Collins Hill four-star tight end Ethan Davis, Savannah (Ga.) Calvary Day School four-star linebacker Troy Ford, Jr., Irmo (S.C.) Dutch Fork running back Jarvis Green and Paris (Tenn.) Henry County four-star offensive tackle Luke Brown.

Daugherty is ranked as the No. 5 safety and No. 42 overall prospect in the 2023 class by 247Sports, while Davis is the No. 15 tight end in the class per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Daugherty, Ford and Green all traveled to Clemson to participate in the Swinney Camp in June.

Stay tuned to TCI as we will have plenty of returns from Saturday’s visitors following the game.
