Florida hosting 4-star EDGE committed to FSU over weekend

Javion Hilson was interested in Florida before he committed to Alabama and flipped to Florida State. Now he’s returning to Gainesville for another visit.

Cocoa edge defender [autotag]Javion Hilson[/autotag] was one of Florida’s top targets toward the end of 2024, but he committed to Alabama in December and flipped to Florida State.

But the Gators aren’t out of the race for Hilson just yet.

He’ll be in town on Saturday for Florida’s final junior day of the contact period, according to On3. He’ll also stop by Miami over the weekend.

Hilson last visited The Swamp for Florida’s upset win over Tennessee. At the time, he said UF was near the top of his recruitment. Getting some more one-on-one time with Gators head coach Billy Napier could help Florida’s chances immensely, but flipping him is no easy task.

Hilson is a consensus four-star recruit ranked the highest by On3 at No. 37, but even ESPN has him inside its top 100. As a result, Hilson checks in at No. 33 nationally on the On3 industry ranking, which uses a weighted average of all four major recruiting services. He’s also ranked No. 3 among edge defenders in the class.

Florida set to host tight end target after presenting offer

Florida will host three-star Lehi (Utah) tight end Bear Tenney this weekend for the Gators’ final junior day of the January contact period.

The latest name added to Florida’s visitors list for Saturday is Lehi (Utah) tight ends [autotag]Bear Tenney[/autotag], according to Swamp 247.

Florida offered Tenney back in December, but it’s taken until now to get him on campus. He’s picked up over two dozen offers making him one of the more sought-after tight ends in the class.

“I’ve had a great relationship with Coach, Billy Napier, and Coach Callaway! They’ve kept up with me every week since they’ve been there. Can’t wait for the visit.”

Tenney has been to Oregon and Texas so far this month, and he’s mentioned that he could be nearing a decision. With no timeline in place, Florida’s recruiting staff must act quickly to secure a commitment from him.

Tenney is a consensus three-star recruit ranked the highest by Rivals.com at No. 24 among tight ends in the class of 2025. The On3 industry ranking, which uses a weighted average of all four major services, puts him at No. 538 overall in the class and No. 28 at his position.

Gators among top options for this 4-star legacy WR recruit

Florida continues to push for 4-star Florida legacy WR Vernell Brown III, who says he’ll trim down his list over the next month or so.

Hailing from from Orlando, wide receiver [autotag]Vernell Brown III[/autotag] took the month of January to visit each of Florida’s top football programs — Florida, Florida State and Miami (sorry, UCF).

With the recruiting calendar nearly completely turned over to the 2025 class, Bown is beginning to take his recruitment a bit more seriously, which means narrowing down his options.

“February I will be gathering my thoughts and see what’s what, and that is when I will (trim) things,” Brown said to 247Sports.”Officials in June and if all goes to plan, hopefully (a commitment) by July.”

But it’s not the family ties that has Brown so interested in the Orange and Blue.

“I would say it’s coach Billy G (receivers coach Billy Gonzalez) and how he develops receivers,” Brown said. “He has a great history of developing them. I would say that’s what sticks out the most to me.”

Along with Florida’s Big Three, Ohio State and Oregon seemed poised to crack a top-five for Brown. The Buckeyes have wide receivers coach Brian Hartline, who has been one of the best recruiters in the business over the past few years, and Oregon’s jerseys will always keep the Ducks in it.

Brown is a four-star receiver everywhere but 247Sports, where he is a three-star talent. Still, the On3 industry ranking, which uses a weighted average of all four major services, considers him a four-star recruit and ranks him No. 310 overall in the class of 2024.

Florida hosts 4-star Alabama LB commit for junior day

Although four-star linebacker Myles Johnson has been committed to Alabama since October, he stopped by The Swamp for Florida’s junior day.

A lot has changed in Tuscaloosa since blue-chip T.R. Miller High linebacker [autotag]Myles Johnson[/autotag] committed to the University of Alabama, and the Florida Gators are still pushing to flip him.

Johnson was in Gainesville this weekend for Florida’s junior day on Saturday, according to Swamp247, and it was an eye-opening experience for the Crimson Tide commit.

“I am committed to Alabama, so it’s my first visit outside of Alabama,” Johnson said. “It really opened my eyes. Definitely will have to come back sometime. This being the first place, they really set the bar high for places outside (of Alabama). I really liked it. Really enjoyed it and the people, and the relationships already.”

When Johnson committed to Alabama, Nick Saban was still the head coach, but the door could be wide open for Billy Napier and Co. to flip him with Saban retiring earlier this month. It won’t be easy, though. Johnson has remained committed through the transition at Alabama so far and hasn’t shown any signs that he’s ready to bail on the program.

Johnson is a four-star recruit everywhere but Rivals.com, where he is a three-star talent. The On3 industry ranking puts him at No. 291 overall and No. 32 among linebackers from the class of 2025.

Top-ranked tight end committed to UGA plans to visit Florida

Despite a verbal commitment to Georgia back in April, the top tight end in the class of 2025 plans to visit the Swamp for a junior day.

The Florida Gators are looking for an elite tight end recruit from the class of 2025, and what better place is there to start than the top?

The top-ranked tight end in the class, Georgia commit Elyiss Williams, has plans to stop by the Swamp next weekend for Florida’s final junior day of January, according to Gators Online. He’s expected in Gainesville on Saturday.

Williams committed to the Bulldogs in April, but there are still 11 more months for Florida to try and flip him. Getting him on campus for the first time is a start, but ensuring he makes a return visit is the real test.

The On3 recruiting prediction says Florida State, UCF and Tennessee are the teams most likely to make a run, but he also holds offers from Auburn, Miami, Notre Dame and South Carolina.

Williams is a consensus four-star recruit who is likely to earn a fifth star once he begins his senior year. He’s ranked No. 17 overall on the On3 industry ranking, which uses a weighted average of all four major services.

IMG Academy CB in 2025 cycle talks junior day, sets another visit

The Gators made some headway with this IMG prospect last weekend and will be getting him back on campus soon.

The 2025 recruiting cycle is in full swing and the Florida Gators are currently in the thick of things as the program looks ahead to the future.

One of the many prep prospects to stop in town recently is cornerback Major Preston out of Bradenton (Florida) IMG Academy, who paid a visit last weekend for junior day. The 6-foot-1-inch, 170-pound defensive back originally from Hopewell, Virginia, had a positive experience in the Swamp Saturday on his first-ever trip to Gainesville.

“It was really good,” Preston told Swamp247. “From the campus to the coaches, I really like it.”

The high school junior received an offer from the Gators the day after Christmas 2023. Florida was not the first SEC team to offer Preston, however. The Ole Miss Rebels had already thrown its hat in the ring alongside the Florida A&M Rattlers, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Liberty Flames, Marshall Thundering Herd and Virginia Tech Hokies.

Secondary coach Will Harris has been the point man in Preston’s recruitment.

“Me and coach Harris, we got a good bond together. We talked on the phone after he offered me. I got on campus, and he told me some really great things,” he noted.

“(Harris is) a good guy,” he continued. “He’s a very great coach. Seeing that from our meeting we had together, everything he told me was everything I wanted to hear.”

It appears that things are trending well for the Orange and Blue with Preston, as he plans on making a return visit very soon.

“I’ll be here next week [January 27th].”

Preston is unrated and unranked in all four of the major scouting organizations, including 247Sports and On3. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine has the Hokeis in the lead for his talents, holding a 69.7% chance of landing him; Florida is second at 21.6%.

Class of 2025 linebacker details visit to UF campus

The Florida Gators hosted numerous recruits from the class of 2025, and there’s hope to flip a three-star commit from the Miami Hurricanes.

The reviews for junior day at the Florida football program are coming in from the visiting recruits, and positivity is raining down from the coaching staff and a in-state three-star prospect from the 2025 recruiting cycle.

Osceola High School linebacker [autotag]Elijah Melendez[/autotag] made an official visit to the UF campus this past weekend to meet with several members of the Gators coaching staff, including head coach Billy Napier.

Melendez gave his review and detailed the trip to Swamp247, stating that one defensive coach was with him for most of the visit.

“It was actually really good,” Melendez said. “Coach (Cannon) Gibbs made sure to prioritize me the whole time I was there. He was really with me the whole time I was there. I got to have a meeting with Coach (Ron) Roberts, Coach [Austin] Armstrong, and Coach (Billy) Napier. They made it known to me that I am a priority.”

Melendez is actually familiar with new co-defensive coordinator Ron Roberts, giving the Gators the edge at recruiting the 3-star recruit.

“It was really good to get around him,” Melendez said of his time around Roberts. “I am really excited he got (the UF) job. It really helps Florida a lot with them recruiting me still. Coach Roberts knows a lot, and he’s just a great coach. They really made it known to me that I am the top guy on their MIKE board. I actually knew Coach Roberts already from when he was at Auburn. So this wasn’t like a first meeting or anything.”

Melendez is a 3-star linebacker from Kissimmee, Florida, ranking at No. 34 among his position and is No. 146 overall according to the 247Sports composite scale. He’s currently listed as a “hard commit” to the Miami Hurricanes.

Florida getting 5-star FSU O-line commit on campus for junior day

The Florida Gators are getting a five-star offensive lineman who is committed to the Florida State Seminoles on campus.

Raines High (Jacksonville) interior offensive lineman [autotag]Solomon Thomas[/autotag] committed to the Florida State Seminoles last month, but that hasn’t stopped the Florida Gators from recruiting the five-star prospect.

Ranked the No. 19 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting cycle on the  247Sports composite, Thomas is the type of blue-chip recruit who can quickly revamp a program’s offensive line. Florida struggled in the trenches last season and is looking to reload.

Thomas is scheduled to visit the Swamp over the second weekend of the January contact period, according to Swamp247. The Gators hosted a group of recruits over the first weekend of the period and Thomas is one of the headliners for the coming weekend.

It won’t be easy to flip Thomas from FSU, but Florida is going to push for him until he steps foot on another campus. Getting him on campus for a junior day should help the Gators stay relevant, but he’ll need to return multiple times to get the job done.

Blue-chip 2025 QB prospect digging Florida’s vibe after visit

The Gators gained some ground last weekend during their first junior day of the 2024 calendar year with this coveted quarterback.

Florida football’s first junior day event of 2024 is starting to bear fruit as prep prospects emerge from the weekend in the Swamp with positive takeaways from Billy Napier’s program.

Among those in attendance was four-star quarterback [autotag]Antwann Hill Jr[/autotag]. out of Warner Robins (Georgia) Houston County in the 2025 recruiting cycle. The 6-foot-5-inch, 215-pound passer has been on campus before but his most recent visit allowed him to reconnect and strengthen bonds.

“They are sitting pretty good right now,” he told Swamp247 of the Gators. “They were my first visit this offseason, so they did a great job showing me and my family hospitality. I feel like Florida is a place that could potentially get me as their quarterback.”

The Florida State Seminoles, Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas A&M Aggies, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Ole Miss Rebels and Auburn Tigers are among some of the other suitors he noted. Still, he sees some good things about the Gators.

“I like the tradition they got going on at Florida. These haven’t been some great past seasons for them, but as Coach Napier said, this year coming up should be the year they take their next step up.

“The last two or three years, they have been rebuilding and building. I feel like this next season, they have a special 2024 class coming in, so they can make something happen in the SEC this year.”

Hill is ranked No. 67 overall and No. 6 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 77 and 7, respectively. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine has the North Carolina Tar Heels ahead with a commanding 78.3% chance of signing him; Florida is fourth at 2.3%.

In-state 2026 DB recruit strongly favors Florida after recent visit

It’s still early for this 2026 defensive back prospect but he certainly has eyes for the Gators.

Billy Napier and Co. were busy last weekend for the opening of the college football recruiting contact period. The first junior day of the calendar year was an important one for Florida as the program continues to search for the best prop prospects to fit in the Swamp’s scheme – even when the recruit is in a different class.

One of the emerging student-athletes that paid a visit to Gainesville was 2026 defensive back [autotag]Jaelen Waters[/autotag] out of Seffner (Florida) Armwood. The 6-foot-2-inch, 170-pound high school sophomore has made the trek up I-75 in the past but his most recent stop gave him a better opportunity to get intimate with the school.

“My time was good,” Waters told Swamp247. “I talked with Coach Will [Harris] and talked to most of the other coaches there actually. I got to sit down with Coach Napier, and have a long conversation with him and Coach Harris.

“They were both just telling me to stay humble though the process,” he added. “They were amazed at the things I did this past year, and me going from having no film to where I am now in a year.”

His relationship with Harris has been a very positive one thanks to the coach’s hard work on the road. The nascent defensive backs coach paid a visit to Waters’ high school the first chance he got and it appears to be paying off after meeting again on campus.

“He gives me like a father figure type of vibe,” Waters noted. “He is going to keep me on track, and he said he’s going to be back by my school again this week coming up. He’s going to keep me on track, and always check in on me.”

But there is more to the relationship than just sports.

“It’s not all about football with him,” he continued. “Outside of football, he wants to be there for me to prepare me as a man. He’s going to take care of me and be that father figure type on top of being a coach. He would be my position coach, so I would need that if I do end up going there.”

The University of Florida also has the edge on the family side as well.

“My dad is like a big Florida fan, so I have been catching up on Florida since I was young. I ain’t going to lie,” Waters admitted.

“Since I just got home from the visit, they are looking like the first school for me. Like they are number one. I am feeling the school, and feeling the coaches. I know I am not going to be someone who commits to a coach. I am someone who is going to commit to a school.”

Water is unrated and unranked by all of the major scouting outlets. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine gives the Gators a commanding 67.2% chance of signing him early on, followed by the USF Bulls (5.3%), Jackson State Tigers (4.6%) and Ole Miss Rebels (3.8%).
