This stat backs up why Notre Dame’s Patterson is so highly thought of

Impressive

The Fighting Irish offensive line is going to be one of their strengths for this upcoming season the leader of the group being [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag]. The pre-season All-American has left no doubt in many minds that he is one of the best, if not the best, interior offensive lineman in the country.

As the season is set to begin this weekend for a few teams, the greatness of few players is being highlighted by Pro Football Focus and recently it was Patterson’s turn. As PFF pointed out, during his career in South Bend, Patterson has had 1,306 pass block snaps and has not allowed a single sack.

That is one impressive statistic, especially for an offensive lineman. It shows many that not only is the pre-season accolades warranted, that if Patterson continues this trend, some post-season hardware could be headed his way.

Four Notre Dame players make AP preseason All-American team

Like this list?

With the college football season almost here, the time has come for The Associated Press to unveil its preseason All-Americans. Notre Dame is expected to have another solid season, so it has fair representation on this list. It has four players on the list that are split evenly between the first and second teams. One of them is new to the Irish this year, making him one of seven transfers on this year’s team.

No, the preseason All-American team isn’t remembered or even celebrated nearly as much as the team unveiled at the end of the season. Still, if you’re going to watch college football this year, and you probably are given that you’re reading this story, you want to have some players to watch. They most likely will be the ones that define how 2022 goes, though several might fall all in favor of some surprises.

Here are Notre Dame’s representatives on this year’s preseason team:

Notre Dame could be down one of their stars against Ohio State

Not great Bob

This was not the news that anyone wanted to hear. As Notre Dame head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] met with the media today, he announced an injury to star All-American offensive lineman [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag] that could potentially keep him out of the season opening contest against Ohio State.

Freeman said that Patterson suffered a foot sprain during practice Monday and will be held out of practice for the next 10 days. That would put the star lineman as “questionable” for the highly anticipated road contest against Ohio State.

The one saving grace is that Patterson has not yet been labeled out of the game, but not being fully healthy leading up to the game is not the best news. Time will tell if Patterson can be healthy enough to see the field against the Buckeyes on November 3rd.

Notre Dame football: Harry Hiestand discusses offensive line

How much of a strength will this unit be in 2022?

At most places the hiring of an offensive line coach would be considered news but the excitement of it wouldn’t come close to the hiring of other position coaches.  But then again most places aren’t Notre Dame, specifically when it comes to offensive line lineage and few position coaches are as good at their craft as [autotag]Harry Hiestand[/autotag] is at his.

So after four years of [autotag]Jeff Quinn[/autotag] as offensive line coach, Notre Dame welcomes back Hiestand who helped develop the likes of [autotag]Zack Martin[/autotag], [autotag]Quenton Nelson[/autotag], [autotag]Ronnie Stanley[/autotag], and [autotag]Mike McGlinchey[/autotag] among others, is back and expectations are high for a unit that had plenty of issues a season ago.

So how does Hiestand see his offensive line this year?  Here is what the Notre Dame offensive line coach had to say.

Four Notre Dame linemen named to Lombardi Award watch list

The Lombardi Award has quite the interesting recent history.

The Lombardi Award has quite the interesting recent history. Given to the college football lineman who best embodies the late great Vince Lombardi, the award’s eligibility was expanded to all positions from 2017 to 2020. The award reverted to its original eligibility in 2021, and Notre Dame is benefiting from that in 2022. That’s because four Irish players have been named to the watch list for the award.

Not only is the winner the best player at his position, but he also best reflects Lombardi’s character. The Irish undoubtedly are happy that they will go into the season with four chances to net the sixth Lombardi Award in program history. [autotag]Manti Te’o[/autotag] was the Irish’s last winner in 2012, so they definitely are overdue for another one.

The award can be presented to a lineman on either side of the ball, and since tight ends also can be blockers, they are eligible for the award, too. Keep that in mind as we look at the Irish players on the list:

Notre Dame has two names on Outland Trophy watch list

Do you have a preference for who would win this?

If Notre Dame’s offense is to have any success this season, much of it will come from the offensive line. While that’s true every year, the Irish especially can call that a strong area this season. That’s because both [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag] and [autotag]Josh Lugg[/autotag] have been named to the preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy. This award recognizes the best interior lineman in college football and can go to a player on either offense or defense.

The honor definitely adds to Patterson’s reputation as he also is on the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, given to college football’s best center. He has not allowed a sack in his career yet, and both he and Lugg started every game for the Irish in 2021. Irish quarterbacks would be wise to take advantage of having these two weapons.

The Irish’s history with the Outland Trophy goes back to its beginning in 1946. [autotag]George Connor[/autotag] and [autotag]Bill Fischer[/autotag] won in two of the first three years it was presented. Their only other winner was [autotag]Ross Browner[/autotag] in 1976.

Pro Football Focus ranks Notre Dame’s offensive tackles among the best

That’s an impressive pair

The Irish have long been in the conversation for “[autotag]O-Line U[/autotag]” and every year their argument gets stronger and stronger. Not only do the Irish have one of the best centers in the country in [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag], the presumed starting offensive tackles are among the best in the country as well.

Pro Football Focus ranked the Top 25 OT’s in the country and both [autotag]Blake Fisher[/autotag] and [autotag]Joe Alt[/autotag] were on their list. Fisher checked in first, at 10th, even though he is coming off an injury last year that took away most of his season. Alt was ranked just a few behind Fisher at 14th, making the pair one of three teams, Ohio State and Miami (FL), to have both their tackles ranked inside the Top 15 by PFF.

Anthony Treash goes a bit more in depth on their selection of Fisher, as he was named one of their “biggest projections” mainly due to his knee injury. Treash believes that Fisher “has the chance to establish himself as the next great blocker up front for the team as a starter at right tackle this fall.”

If you want to get nit-picky, Alt probably should be ranked above Fisher due to his exploits last year but having both starting tackles on this list is still very impressive. These two will be around through at least the end of next season, as both of them are second-year players.

Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer, Jarrett Patterson make award watch lists

Which of these two is more likely to win their respective award?

The preseason award watch lists continue to come out, and Notre Dame continues to be represented. The two latest examples of that come from the watch lists for the Mackey Award and the Rimington Trophy. Among the entrants on those lists are [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag] and [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag], respectively.

The Mackey Award is given to the best tight end in college football. [autotag]Tyler Eifert[/autotag] won it in 2012. Mayer probably has a better chance at nabbing this one than the Maxwell Award, which he also is on the watch list for. Seven of the past nine Maxwell Award winners have been quarterbacks, so that says it all.

The Rimington Trophy is awarded to college football’s best center. Patterson would be the first Irish player to take it home. He’ll hope for better luck in 2022 as this is the second straight year he has been named to the watch list. If the Irish have a good season, he’ll have to be in the conversation.
