POSTGAME REPORT: Alabama overpowers Miami to earn first win of the 2021 season

Alabama completely overpowers the Miami Hurricanes to earn its first win of the 2021 season

The Alabama Crimson Tide completely overpowered the Miami Hurricanes earning a 44 to 13 victory in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

First-year starter Bryce Young led the offense with 344 yards passing and four touchdowns, finishing 27 of 38 through the air.

Ohio State transfer Jameson Williams made a splash in his Alabama debut, finishing with four catches for 126 yards, including a 94-yard touchdown reception from Bryce Young.

The Pete Golding-led Alabama defense was just as dominating. They held the Hurricanes to just 13 points and a total of 266 total yards.

Super sophomore Will Anderson lived up to his preseason expectations. The talented EDGE defender finished the game with one sack and several QB hurries.

Alabama delivered a completely dominating performance to start the season. Let’s see if they can carry that over next week as they take on the Mercer Bears in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama football position preview: Wide receivers

Alabama is loaded with young talent at wide receiver.

Now that we have completed the defensive side of the ball in our position previews, we shift our focus to the offensive side. Today we will look at the wide receivers.

Let’s get started!

Jameson Williams dishes on why he left Ohio State for Alabama

Former Ohio State receiver Jameson Williams spoke with Bama Insider and provided detail on why he left the Buckeyes for Alabama.

Apparently, those that said you can never have too much of a good thing haven’t been hanging around the wide receiver room at the Ohio State football facilities.

Over the last few years, the Buckeyes have landed some of the best receiving prospects in the country. Brian Hartline is tearing it up when it comes to his ability to form relationships and recruit the best out there. Heck, as it stands, OSU is projected to have two first-round graded receivers in next year’s draft, Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson.

Behind them are Julian Fleming (No. 1 receiving prospect in the 2020 class), Emeka Egbuka (No. 1 for 2021), Marvin Harrison, Jr. (son of a Hall of Famer) and Jaxon Smith-Njigba (five-star from 2020). Another five-star, Caleb Burton, is also on the way for the 2022 class.

That seems to have spooked one of last year’s starters, Jameson Williams. So much so, he entered the transfer portal and is headed — to of all places — Alabama. Or at least that was the conventional thinking.

Well, we’ve heard a little from Williams on that decision thanks to Bama Insider, and it appears we were right all along. The former four-star St. Louis standout felt unsettled when it came to his role within the group heading into next season.

“To me, things were just unclear,” Williams said. “I wasn’t certain of my role in the offense. The receiver room got crowded. I just decided I needed a fresh start. I decided to enter the portal.”

It became more and more clear that Williams, who was a starter last season, would not be one this fall with the emergence of Smith-Njigba. And for a guy that has a ton of speed and was listed on the top line of the depth chart last fall, it was a little too much to take.

Alabama was a close second when Williams committed to Ohio State because of pressure from family, so pulling the trigger and hitting the reset button with the Crimson Tide made a lot of sense.

“It was real close,” Williams told Bama Insider. “My dad and I had full blown out arguments about it. I was thinking different than him and went to Ohio State instead of Alabama.”

So there you have it. The receiving group at Ohio State has gotten so talented that players are transferring out to try and get playing time at Alabama. Let that sink in.

Receiver Jameson Williams is transferring to Alabama

Ohio State receiver Jameson Williams announced his transfer to Alabama on his Twitter account Monday.

We were all a little shocked when one of the top receivers on Ohio State’s depth chart entered the transfer portal last week. As a starter last season, Jameson Williams was expected to compete to be in the two-deep again, but instead pulled the ripcord and decided to look at other opportunities.

The news was quick on the programs he was looking at, including arch-rival Michigan, but now we know the exact destination he’ll be looking to make an impact at, and it is none other than the Alabama Crimson Tide. Williams announced his decision on Twitter Monday morning.

We can’t reiterate what a curious move this appears to be. It makes you think that some of the younger receivers may have impressed even more than we thought and that Williams saw the writing on the wall. You of course never know what’s going on behind the scenes with relationships, etc., but we do want to take this moment to wish the 6-foot, 2-inch, 188-pounder from St. Louis well.

It did appear as though Williams would not be a starter any longer with the emergence and further development of Jaxon Smith-Njigba, but he’ll maybe get a chance to slot into Alabama’s starting lineup with the departure of both Jaylen Waddle and DeVonta Smith.

Could Ohio State wide receiver Jameson Williams transfer to Michigan?

Ohio State receiver, Jameson Williams narrowed his transfer choices with one being arch-rival, Michigan.

Say it ain’t so. Could a former Ohio State Buckeye move to the dark side? Apparently, Jameson Williams, who entered the transfer portal recently, is keeping the possibility open.

With a crowded room and abundance of talent in the wide receiver room at Ohio State, Williams announced he would look elsewhere for playing time this coming fall. He is the second to do so this off-season after Mookie Cooper transferred to Missouri earlier this year.

Williams shared with Allen Trieu of 247 Sports that he has narrowed his list of schools where he may attend, and there are some blue bloods on his list. Among them are, Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Florida, Michigan State, USC, and gasp… Michigan.

Williams told Trieu that he is close to making a decision that will come in a matter of days.

Buckeye Nation has been fairly gracious with those players who have transferred out of the program. Once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye… right? But if Williams were to go to TTUN, it might be a different story.

We’ll anxiously await the decision and see if a little more spice gets thrown into the greatest rivalry in college football.

MSU listed as a finalist to land former 4-star, Ohio State transfer WR Jameson Williams

Michigan State is still in the mix to land former four-star wide receiver Jameson Williams who is transferring from Ohio State.

Michigan State is continuing to remain active in the transfer portal, and could be landing a former top wide receiver prospect leaving Ohio State.

Jameson Williams — a former four-star wide receiver and Ohio State Buckeye — revealed his finalists for where he’ll be transferring this offseason and Michigan State is still in the mix. The Spartans are joined by Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Florida, USC and Michigan.

A decision from Williams is expected to come very soon, according to Allen Trieu of 247Sports.

Williams — originally from St. Louis — was ranked as the No. 13 wide receiver and No. 82 overall prospect in the 2019 class by 247Sports.

William had 15 receptions for 266 yards and three touchdowns in the two seasons he played at Ohio State. That included three receptions for 62 yards and one touchdown in this year’s College Football Playoff semifinal win over Clemson.

Trieu has the full story on Williams and where he might end up. Click here to read more on Williams and if the Spartans will land yet another big-time transfer.

Ohio State WR considering Michigan among transfer destination choices

According to 247Sports, Michigan football could possibly get a Buckeye to switch allegiances.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbzardvge799bm2 player_id=01eqbvp13nn1gy6hd4 image=https://wolverineswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Players crossing state and rivalry lines doesn’t happen often, but it does happen.

As far as crossing rivalry lines is concerned, that happened to Michigan this offseason. Former linebacker Ben VanSumeren transferred to Michigan State, which garnered plenty of reactions.

Over a decade ago, former Wolverines offensive lineman Justin Boren defected for rival Ohio State after Lloyd Carr retired, setting up a line of Borens who donned scarlet and grey — even though their father was a former Wolverine himself.

But, could it go the other way? Could a Buckeye become a Wolverine?

It’s possible, notes 247Sports’ Allen Trieu. OSU wide receiver Jameson Williams is considering Michigan among his many transfer destinations.

Former Ohio State wide recevier Jameson Williams is a popular transfer portal pursuit for a lot of schools right now.

But Williams reports to 247Sports that after a hectic time of constant contact from coaches, he has narrowed his focus to Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Florida, Michigan State, USC and Michigan.

Of course, that’s a lot of schools, so if the Wolverines want him, it’ll be something of a battle, considering the prowess of Alabama, Texas A&M, Florida and USC. MSU also has a solid track record under Mel Tucker of bringing in high-end transfers.

But if Williams ended up in Ann Arbor, it would be a huge boost for a program that lost Giles Jackson to Washington this offseason.

At this juncture, who knows whether Williams could see himself wearing maize and blue, but it’s interesting, nonetheless, that the Wolverines are a contender for his services.

Ohio State wide receiver Jameson Williams enters transfer portal

Ohio State wideout Jameson Williams will look to transfer for the upcoming season, putting his name in the transfer portal.

Ohio State has an embarrassment of talent in many positions on the football team, but in particular at wide receiver. In the past 3 years, the Buckeyes have secured the No. 2 rated receiver in Garret Wilson and the last two No. 1 ranked receivers in Julian Fleming and Emeka Egbuka. Throw in other highly rated recruits like Marvin Harrison, Jr. and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and it’s enough to make any opposing defensive coordinator’s head explode.

There just isn’t room for everyone to get on the field, so inevitably, guys are going to take a look at places they might get more playing time. And the latest to do so at Ohio State is Jameson Williams. Williams is the second Buckeye receiver to enter the transfer portal this off-season, joining Mookie Cooper.

Ohio State has since confirmed Williams transfer portal decision. While this does take some experience from the roster at wideout, it does open the door for some of the highly touted youngsters to step up and show what they can do.

Sugar Bowl key matchup: Ohio State receivers versus Clemson safeties Nolan Turner and Lannden Zanders

We examine the Ohio State versus Clemson Sugar Bowl key matchups with the Buckeyes wide receivers and Clemson safety Nolan Turner.

As we continue to preview the Sugar Bowl between Ohio State and Clemson, we now focus on the passing game for the Buckeyes.

We already covered Chris Olave versus Derion Kendrick so the big-play OSU threat won’t be mentioned as much as Garrett Wilson, Jameson Williams, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. With Clemson safety Nolan Turner forced to sit the first half due to a targeting call against Notre Dame, Lannden Zanders, and maybe Joseph Charleston will have to rotate at both safety spots until Turner returns in the second half. This matchup is where Ohio State could thrive early in the Sugar Bowl.

Nolan specifically has been playing really good football and has helped himself from probably being an undrafted free agent to a late-round selection. Nolan thrives if he can keep plays in front of him and diagnose the play. Where he struggles is when he’s forced to play man coverage, as his ability to stay on the hip of the receiver still needs some work.

Ohio State can take advantage by forcing the safeties to play man coverage or forcing Clemson to choose which receiver in the zone to play. Garrett Wilson, Jameson Williams, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Julian Fleming have the speed to get into the secondary and force these decisions. Justin Fields has to be on the same page as the receivers and see which way Turner shades.

Route combinations will be huge for Ohio State if the offense wants to push the ball downfield in a single shot. Nolan will also at times react to play-action early which would allow for a crossing receiver through his zone. Getting man coverage might be hard to come by, but with the right scheme and playcalling, the Buckeyes could make some hay with Nolan being out, then exploit his blind spots in development when he is in.
