The Ohio State women’s basketball team is moving on in the NCAA Tournament after defeating James Madison in the first round in Columbus on Friday 80-66. Though the Buckeyes started out slowly, they were able to make a push and seize the game in the second half  “survive and advance.”

It was nice for Buckeye fans to be able to see Ohio State host the first round at home, and it was even nicer for some of the hometown photos that were able to be snapped.

Here are some of the best high-resolution photos of OSU’s win over James Madison in first-round action of the NCAA Tournament. Happy scrolling.

Notre Dame football: 9 potential candidates to replace Tommy Rees

Who do you want to replace Tommy Rees?

Just a year after declaring he wanted to stay and fight for Notre Dame, offensive coordinator [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] is off to Tuscaloosa to join Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama. Rees took over as Notre Dame’s play-caller in 2020 and showed signs of stardom. He also made a few decisions that left Notre Dame fans rather frustrated.

The new offensive coordinator will be tasked with some difficult things.  Notably, Rees raised the level of talent in the quarterback room significantly.  When you look at what Notre Dame had at the position on their roster from 2017-2022 and look at the projected depth charts in coming years you can’t help seeing a significant step in the right direction.

But who will replace Rees?

This will be a massive test for Marcus Freeman early in his head coaching career because the hiring of quality assistants is a must for any sustained success. Here are nine names he would be wise to at least look at to replace Rees.

James Madison vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why James Madison Will Win

Old Dominion has suffered a power outage.

It wasn’t exactly ripping it up offensively over the first part of the season, but now it hit a wall, especially on the ground. The running game that hit Coastal Carolina for 320 yards a few weeks ago was stuffed by Georgia State for 26 yards and came up with just 11 against Marshall.

Now it gets to go against the second-best run defense in America. James Madison has allowed fewer than 65 yards five time so far. but …

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why Old Dominion Will Win

The Monarchs might not have enough on offense, but the defense has been making things interesting.

The pass rush continues to be among the best in America, there’s a lot of bending without breaking, and the secondary has held up better after a rough start.

There weren’t any turnovers last week in the loss to Louisville, but James Madison has had a massive giveaway problem 14 over the five games before that.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The offenses will perk. up a wee bit.

James Madison will stuff the Old Dominion running game from the start, and the Duke passing attack that went bye-bye over the last two weeks will suddenly reemerge.

The three-game slide stops here.

James Madison vs Louisville Game Preview

Why James Madison Will Win

There might have been a few problems lately with two straight losses, but the run defense remained the best in the nation.

The Dukes are only allowing 55 yards per game even after giving up a season-most 167 yards in the loss to Marshall.

The defensive front is amazing at getting into the backfield and creating negative plays, the passing game should push for 300 yards, and the secondary won’t allow much to this bunch.

Louisville can throw, but it’s not always consistently connecting. However …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Louisville Will Win

The defense continues to take the ball away by the truckload.

Louisville’s offense is going to run well and take advantage of any openings, but it’s not going to hang up almost 600 yards on the James Madison defense like Georgia Southern did a few weeks ago.

What it will do, though, is get more than a few takeaways.

The D has come up with 23 in the last six games including a stunning eight in the 48-21 win over Wake Forest last week. That has made all the difference.

Not surprisingly, Louisville is 4-1 when coming up with three or more takeaways. James Madison has turned it over nine times in the last two weeks and multiple times in four of the last five games so …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

James Madison has the defense, the balanced offense, and the fire to pull off a win in its first game against a Power Five team as an FBS program. It’ll play well and keep up, but two turnovers will be a problem.

The Louisville defense is feeling it. It’s playing well, and it’ll take over when needed in the second half.

Marshall vs James Madison Game Preview

Why James Madison Will Win

What the heck happened to Marshall?

It stunned Notre Dame with a brilliant defensive performance, three takeaways, and a ground game that stepped up and dominated, and … poof. It all went away.

Sort of.

The defense is still solid against the run, but the offense can’t seem to find any semblance of a groove. It couldn’t do anything against the great Troy defense, it couldn’t stop screwing up against Bowling Green, and last week it simply couldn’t move against Louisiana.

It’s not going to start running against the best run defense in the country. James Madison has allowed a grand total of 217 rushing yards so far this year and gave up just 12 against Georgia Southern last week.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Marshall Will Win

James Madison finally dropped its first loss of the year because Georgia Southern threw for 578 yards in a while shootout that was almost as fun as that Alabama-Tennessee thing.

As good as the Dukes are they’re not above turning it over, giving it away four times in the loss. Marshall needs to feed off that.

For all the problems and issues, the Herd have generated multiple takeaways in four of the six games, winning three of them.

Now the Herd have to get the passing game going and …

– Predictions, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Nope.

A few takeaways will keep Marshall in the game, but it’s not running on the Duke defensive front, and there isn’t enough of a passing attack to make up for it.

Marshall won’t be a total pushover, but James Madison will make up for last week’s gaffe.

James Madison vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why James Madison Will Win

The run defense continues to be the best in the county.

Texas State was able to run for 106 yards, but that’s been it against a D that so far has allowed 205 yards in five games.

The Dukes are making a ton of plays in the backfield, the offense is dominating the time of possession battle, and everything is working on both sides of the ball.

Appalachian State is the only team to come close to taking down the new FBS program.

Georgia Southern wants to throw more than run, but the offensive side isn’t the issue. The worst run defense in the Sun Belt is the concern against an efficient JMU offense that hit 200 rushing yards against everyone but Appalachian State.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Georgia Southern’s offensive line has been terrific.

It’s solid for the ground game, the pass protection is as good as any team in the country, and the attack knows how to get things moving. Everything sets up perfectly for what the No. 1 offense in the Sun Belt does – run well enough, hit the third down opportunities, play with a good pace.

Last week the Eagles lost to rival Georgia State on turnovers – there were four picks to go along with a lost fumble. As amazing as James Madison’s defense is, it doesn’t come up with a ton of interceptions.

Limit the mistakes, control the lines, and have a shot because …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Other than Appalachian State, James Madison’s defense hasn’t faced anyone who’s all that dangerous. Georgia Southern has the offense to press and keep pressing.

However, the Eagles couldn’t get the win against a Coastal Carolina offense that control the tempo, and they’ve struggled overall against good passing teams. They’re allowing well over 300 yards in three of the last five games and gave up over 600 combined rushing yards in the other two against UAB and Georgia State.

James Madison’s defense will have a tough afternoon, but the offense will make up for it.

James Madison vs Arkansas State Game Preview

Why James Madison Will Win

Has America figured this out yet?

There hasn’t been a massive win yet over a superstar team, but beating an Appalachian State team that beat Texas A&M is close.

The offense has been balanced and brilliant – it was able to get over five turnovers in the last two games – but that’s not the star.

James Madison walked into the FBS and became the No. 1 defense in college football – at least over the first month. It’s allowing just 218 yards per game, it’s No. 1 in the national against the run, and it’s No. 1 in allowing the fewest first downs.

Arkansas State isn’t playing poorly, but it isn’t coming up with big defensive plays – the secondary is getting picked apart a bit too cleanly.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The offense is playing well enough to push James Madison.

The running game can make a push, the passing attack balances things out, and the attack is great at controlling the clock – the Red Wolves keep the O on the field for well over 35 minutes per game – and the pass rush is great.

The James Madison passing game will be under pressure all game long, it’ll have problems on third downs, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Dukes are playing too well.

Arkansas State will have more success against the James Madison defensive front than most teams, but it still won’t be enough.

JMU will be too balanced and too efficient. The turnovers that plagued the O over the last two weeks will slow down.

James Madison vs Texas State Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

The Bobcats were rocked by Nevada and Baylor, were great against awful FIU and Houston Christian teams – they’re somewhere in the middle of all of that.

The passing game has been solid. It’s able to keep the chains moving, the ground game was good in the two wins, and the secondary has been solid so far even with Baylor and Nevada combining for nine touchdown passes.

As good as James Madison has been, the line is allowing plays in the backfield. Texas State can get behind the line, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why James Madison Will Win

James Madison leads the nation in tackles for loss with close to 11 per game and it’s No. 1 against the run.

It’s not like it’s doing it against a slew of cupcakes. Norfolk State might not have been strong, but Middle Tennessee has been terrific ever since the opening day wipeout loss to the Dukes, and Appalachian State’s ground game is amazing.

JMU has allowed a net total of 79 yards rushing allowing fewer than yards per carry. The defense has been special, the offense is consistent and it’s not screwing up, and …

What’s Going To Happen

James Madison QB Todd Centeio has been fantastic.

In his sixth season, the former Temple Owl and Colorado State Ram is playing like a seasoned vet with 11 touchdown passes, no interceptions, and one touchdown pass.

The Texas State secondary has been solid so far, but that’s not going to be the problem.

The Bobcat offensive line that gives up too many plays behind the line will be what helps the Dukes pull away.

Notre Dame’s Tommy Rees named to Herbstreit’s top performing coaches of Week 4

How impressed were you with Tommy Rees on Saturday?

All too often in life we go around searching for someone to blame for something.  Instead of it being a collective failure, it has to fall on one person.  One scapegoat, if you will.

That one person seemed to be offensive coordinator [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] after the first three weeks of struggles for the Fighting Irish offense but before their 45-32 dismantling of North Carolina.  It turns out Notre Dame fans weren’t the only ones giving praise to Rees for the offensive breakout but that [autotag]Kirk Herbstreit[/autotag] took note as well, listing the former Notre Dame signal caller as one of his top performing coaches in all of college football for Week 4.

Notre Dame’s offense scored six touchdowns, nearly a seventh before a goal line fumble, and totaled 576 yards on the afternoon.

Rees was one of seven coaches mentioned by Herbstreit as he actually ranked second for the weekend.  See the seven Herbstreit ranked in order below:
