Analysis of Chargers’ pick of Jamaree Salyer with No. 195 overall selection

What the selection of Jamaree Salyer means for the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Chargers continue to build on the offensive line, taking former Georgia lineman Jamaree Salyer with the No. 195 overall selection.

Salyer started 20 games at left tackle, two at right tackle, and one at left guard during his time as a Bulldog. While he didn’t start any games at center or right guard, he has also worked at those positions in a reserve role in Athens. He was credited with just two hurries allowed with no sacks given up.

The former five-star recruit who cut his teeth against Aidan Hutchinson at the high school Army Bowl will likely be a guard in the NFL due to average arm length and mobility that will preclude him from sticking on the perimeter long term. He’s a balanced player who has a finishing mentality as a run blocker and plus awareness as a pass protector. With a certification in combo blocks from Georgia’s power-heavy run game, Salyer profiles as a potential starter at guard.

To be honest, I have no idea why Salyer made it this far. I had him graded as a Day 2 pick who could compete for a starting job as a rookie. As a Charger, he’ll be a quality depth piece behind the core three of Matt Feiler, Corey Linsley, and first-round pick Zion Johnson. With experience at all five offensive line positions, Salyer will be an invaluable sixth offensive lineman as a rookie. Beyond that, it’s possible that he grows into a starter at guard with the flexibility to slide to tackle in-game if an injury occurs.

It’s also possible that if Salyer comes along quicker than expected that he claims the left guard spot, with Feiler kicking to right tackle, a position LA has continued to neglect in the draft. Brandon Staley and Tom Telesco were adamant that Feiler will stay at guard after the Zion Johnson selection, but playing the best five linemen on the team is the most important. With the versatility Salyer brings to the table, all options are open.

2022 NFL draft: Chargers pick OL Jamaree Salyer with No. 195 overall selection

The Los Angeles Chargers addressed the offensive line at No. 195 overall.

The Chargers have taken former Georgia offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer with the No. 195 overall selection in the 2022 NFL draft.

Salyer was the Bulldogs’ starting left tackle this past season. He played in 47 games, starting in 23 with 20 starts at left tackle, two at right tackle, and one at left guard.

Salyer had the lowest pressure rate allowed out of any tackle in the country last year and allowed just one sack to top 2023 prospect Will Anderson throughout his career.

At 6-foot-3 and 321 pounds, Salyer has the size, length, hand usage, and play strength to be a starting guard from the get-go, with the ability to play tackle in a pinch.

2022 NFL draft: Jamaree Salyer scouting report

Everything NFL draft fans need to know about Georgia offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer

One of the top recruits in the country who played multiple positions along the offensive line, Georgia’s Jamaree Salyer will bring that experience and versatility to the next level as he enters the 2022 NFL draft.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Bulldogs’ massive mauler:

One offensive guard for the Eagles in every round of the 2022 NFL Draft

Looking at one offensive guard prospect for the Philadelphia Eagles in every round of the 2022 NFL Draft

The Eagles have the NFL’s top offensive line after leading the entire league in rushing, and a major key to that yearly dominance can be found in Howie Roseman stockpiling depth and talent.

Philadelphia has future Hall of Famers on the roster with right tackle Lane Johnson and center Jason Kelce, along with Jordan Mailata and Landon Dickerson.

Jack Driscoll is a talented find from the 2020 class, Andre Dillard is still a talented first-round backup, and Isaac Seumalo will be returning to the roster after missing the bulk of the 2021 campaign with an injury.

The Eagles also have solid reserves in Sua Opeta, Nate Herbig, Le’Raven Clark, and Brett Toth, as well.

The expectation is that Philadelphia will address the defense and wide receiver position early on, but if the Eagles continue their motto of building from the inside, there are several talented guards available in all seven rounds.

Bengals to host notable 2022 NFL draft OL on workout

A big name of note for the Bengals in the 2022 NFL draft.

The Cincinnati Bengals continue to go through the paces of prep for the 2022 NFL draft.

One bit of news that has made its way public? They have or will work with Georgia Bulldogs offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer.

That news comes from The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, who says Salyer recently worked out with the Saints, too.

Salyer, projected as a mid-round prospect, is a huge 6’3″ and 321 pounds with something the Bengals will love — experience playing all five line spots.

Maybe more important than the specific name is what this might tell us about the Bengals’ draft plans when the time comes. With La’el Collins, Alex Cappa and Ted Karras upgrading three of the four underperforming line spots, a versatile, mostly interior player like Salyer might be who they go after in the mid-rounds.

That could mean prioritizing other needs like corner and the pass-rush in the opening rounds. Even if Salyer as a mid-round pick is a high-functioning backup for the foreseeable future, that’s great value at this point — the Bengals won’t always enjoy the relatively great injury luck they had last season.

Packers meet virtually with Georgia OL Jamaree Salyer

The Packers are one of several teams to meet virtually with Jamaree Salyer, Georgia’s versatile offensive lineman.

The Green Bay Packers were one of several teams to meet virtually with Georgia offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer, per Justin Melo of The Draft Network.

Salyer (6-4, 321) played all five positions at Georgia and might have guard-tackle versatility at the NFL level. In 2021, Salyer started 11 games at left tackle and also played right guard. He started games at left tackle, right tackle and right guard during the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Over four seasons, Salyer played in 47 games. He was a second-team All-SEC pick last season.

According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed just one sack and four total pressures in pass protection in 2021.

The Packers could view Salyer as a natural replacement for Billy Turner, who started at left tackle, right guard and right tackle over three seasons in Green Bay.

“The ceiling for a player like Salyer is a starting right tackle,” Packers Wire draft analyst Brennen Rupp wrote. “The floor is a guy that can be a team’s sixth offensive lineman that’s capable of playing all five positions. Somewhere in between all of that is a player that you could plug in at right guard for the next 10 years.”

Salyer didn’t test at the NFL Scouting Combine but did put up 31 reps on the bench press.

Rupp’s full breakdown of Salyer can be found here.
