2024 NFL draft: Chargers awarded one compensatory pick

The Chargers will receive a seventh-round comp pick for their loss of Drue Tranquill.

The Chargers will have an extra pick in the NFL draft.

Los Angeles will receive a seventh-round comp pick for their loss of linebacker Drue Tranquill, who signed with the Chiefs last offseason.

Tranquill appeared in 16 games (eight starts), amassing 78 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a pass deflected.

For his efforts, Tranquill recently re-signed with Kansas City on a three-year, $19 million deal with $13 million guaranteed.

Compensatory picks are awarded to teams who lose out on significant players in free agency and are awarded to those teams the next year.

The pick given to teams is calculated using a formula that includes several qualifiers, including the average per year (APY) of a contract signed, the percentage of snaps a player plays, and their awards and accolades for their performance, such as the AP All-Pro list or PFWA’s list.

The Chargers currently have eight picks for April’s draft.

Kellen Moore applauds Brandon Staley’s offense-first draft strategy

Kellen Moore was taken by surprise when Brandon Staley selected Quentin Johnston with the Chargers’ first-round pick.

The Chargers had work to do in the offseason to prepare for a bounce-back 2023 campaign, and with the draft behind them, their roster is starting to take shape.

After speculation surrounding whether or not they’d favor building on offense or defense first, the team elected to choose TCU wide receiver Quinten Johnston with their first-round pick to give quarterback Justin Herbert another option to throw to.

Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore applauded that decision in comments made to the media after the draft. Speaking to reporters about his thoughts on the team’s draft class, he made it clear that the team’s strategy in the annual selection meeting took him by surprise.

“Brandon [Staley] is this defensive guy and he’s drafting these offensive guys, I like this,” Moore explained. “It’s a lot of fun. Q [Johnston] really stood out for us as we went through the process. Everyone kind of sees the measurables, the size as far as the height and the weight.

“What he did for TCU from his versatility, I thought, was really, really special. His ability to kind of catch-and-run, he was a fly-sweep guy. He got the ball in a lot of different ways. You saw a lot of versatility in his game that maybe, initially, someone may not have necessarily anticipated. We were really excited that he was there and available for us.”

Johnston will have to prove himself to see a significant number of snaps in the regular season but should benefit from the mentorship of receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams when training camp begins in July.

For his part, Moore seems committed to converting on every ounce of promise that Johnston showed on film last season. With some time, the seasoned coordinator could unlock hidden potential in his newest offensive weapon.

Daniel Jeremiah intrigued by idea of Chargers trading back in 2023 NFL draft

There is a strong possibility of the Chargers trading down in this year’s draft.

The Chargers are slated to pick No. 21 overall, at least for now.

There is a growing sense that Tom Telesco could trade down for the first time in his tenure as the franchise’s general manager dating back to 2013.

NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah had his annual pre-draft conference call on Thursday, and he touched up on the possibility of Los Angeles moving back and why it would make sense.

“I think that’s a real possibility and I think as you’re ready to pay Justin [Herbert], having more cheap starters is going to be the way to go,” Jeremiah said.

“I think trading down makes a ton of sense,” Jeremiah added. “If they were to trade down, now you start looking at edge rushers and receivers, I think there’s value down there at the bottom of the first round.”

Los Angeles has plenty of talent across each position group, but the issue is that they lack depth at them.

Trading back would allow them to potentially add another pick in the top 100 and still draft an instant contributor, no matter how far they move back and move them further toward accomplishing the task of bolstering the depth chart.

The 21st selection is pretty valuable and a team like the Cowboys (26th), Bills (27th), Bengals (28th), Saints (29th) or Eagles (30th) could see a player high on their board start to slide, leading to them calling up L.A. to swap picks.

Only a week until we find out if it comes to fruition.

2023 NFL draft: Chargers awarded no compensatory picks

The #Chargers will have to wait until 2024 to receive any compensatory draft picks from the NFL.

The Chargers didn’t get any help from the NFL relative to their draft capital in 2023 after they were not awarded any compensatory picks for players who departed from their roster in 2022.

While the league’s new compensatory pick formula may not suit Los Angeles’ agenda this season, their salary cap situation will almost certainly necessitate that they let several players walk when free agency opens later in March, which will set them up to be awarded more selections next year.

For a team that needs as much young talent as they can find before they extend Justin Herbert on what is set to be a gargantuan second contract, this development is far from ideal. However, it won’t necessarily hamstring the team as they look to reload in search of their first playoff win since 2018.

L.A. still has picks in all seven rounds of the 2023 draft and will have the No. 21 overall selection in the first round. If they can find an impact player to fill needs on either side of the ball in any round in their rookie season, it could go a long way toward getting the Chargers back to legitimate contention.

Chargers not projected to receive compensatory draft pick in 2023

In the 2023 NFL draft, the Chargers will not have a compensatory pick, according to Over The Cap.

The league awards 32 compensatory draft picks each year based on free-agent losses and gains by teams. If a team loses more free agents than it signs, they can receive draft compensation.
